    Hello, this is Algae.
In spring, kumquats are always placed on the fruit stand.
I bought and ate kumquat again this year.
Kumquat is like a fruit with the opposite charm of the sour flesh and the sweetness of the peel.
Sometimes when I see someone's kumquat tree pot on the side of the road, I want to have a tree with small flowers and open fruits.
This year, I decided to plant my own kumquat tree with the seeds left after eating kumquat.
I hope you enjoy watching video and have a nice day.
    Thank you.

There's a kumquat tree in my yard the previous owner planted from a seed she got from a store bought fruit. It produces twice a year and is about 15 feet tall. I am going to start some from seed, probably today, it's going to rain so no outside gardening. It is strong and has withstood a category 5 hurricane. I let nature take care of it except for some pruning so I can mow around it.

Are your kumquat trees the oval sour kind? Or round sweet? I am thinking of growing them from seed. Are they worth growing from seed?

AWESOME Video Algae, thank you for sharing your experience and way to care for kumquats, I'm here because I had 5, one got fungus and died, the other 4 are doing well, I notice here that some seeds sprout "twins", so I guess this is normal, one of these that I have are twins, the other two as well as the twins are a bright green, characteristic of a healthy citrus tree, but one is a pale yellow, its growing well, is this normal? Its doing great, besides the primary leaves, it has the secondary leaves(2) and beginning to grow a third leaf on top. I hope they do well, and with your kind help, I'm more prepared and knowledgeable to care for them.Thank you for sharing, liked and greetings from Mexico! :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
I am very happy that my video can help you.
I am sorry to hear that your sprouts have withered due to fungi.
And I'm glad your other sprouts are safe.
If the leaf color of the citrus plant is pale yellow, it means that the plant is not healthy.
There may be a lack of light, or the roots may be necrotic and rotting.
Or there may be damage caused by pests such as fungus gnat.
If the soil in which you planted the seeds is already depleted of inorganic nutrients (fertilizer), the color of the leaves may be abnormal. (If there is a lack of nitrogen, the color of the leaves may become pale or turn yellow.)
Assess the environment yourself, so that your sprouts can be healthy again.
I will continue to make videos with useful information in the future.
      Thank you for your support.
      Have a nice day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thank you for your compliment and good question.
I understood your question as follows:
Is it possible to harvest fruit from a kumquat tree grown by germinating seeds?
To answer your question, it is possible to harvest fruit from kumquat trees grown from seeds.
However, whether a daughter tree grown from seeds can produce high-quality fruits like the mother tree depends on the characteristics of the seed (variety) you planted.
In Korea, personal experiences of growing seeds and harvesting fruits are often posted in the form of online posts.
To conclude, if you plant the seeds of kumquats, one day you will be able to harvest fruit.
But I don't know what quality of fruits will be harvested.
The small fruit of the kumquat contains a large number of seeds.
If you are going to eat kumquats, I would recommend that you try growing kumquats by seeds.
I hope my answer made you happy.
      Have a nice day :)

Yeah like you ...I can't distinguish which is which. I always thought I can rely on my memory. Hayy... Now I have to wait for how many more years to know what kind of citrus I planted on a certain pot. This time I will label it right away.
By the way how many years before it will bear fruit? I just bought honey kumquat a while ago when I saw a vendor selling. Cost expensive. P200 just for I think 1/4 kg maybe

      Hello This is Algae.
Thank you for the nice question :)
It usually takes more than 3 years for a citrus plant to produce its first fruit.
However, since the age of the first flowering is different for each individual, it is impossible to predict the exact time.
Some people claim that fruit is produced only through grafting.
Grafting is a method to promote the flowering of scion, and the principle of the phenomenon has been scientifically clarified through an epigenetics approach.
However, it is not true that ungrafted trees cannot flower.
In any case, it is impossible to predict when the first fruits will be produced.
However, if you want to accelerate this period as much as possible, I recommend that you use grafting.
      Have a good day :)

Hi there, nice video and well explained. What kind of soil are you suggesting and how of to water it? I know they can stand long droughts once mature trees but how often should I water the plants?
    Thank you in advance

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for leaving a nice question :)
First, I used factory-produced culture soil to grow kumquat. The product is manufactured using cocopeat, pearlite, and vermiculite as main ingredients. If you want to grow kumquat, you can use horticultural soil products on the market. Unless the soil is for special plants that require an acidic pH, like blueberries, you shouldn't have any problems.
Second, I haven't set a specific watering cycle for the kumquat. When the soil surface of the pot is dry, I recognize the situation and water the pot. In the dry season, I watered twice a week, and in the wet season, I watered once every 2-3 weeks. At any time, I watered the pot with plenty of water so that the entire soil was evenly wetted.
Although kumquat is tolerant of dryness, it is desirable to maintain an appropriate level of moisture for smooth growth and fruit production. However, only in the case of large-scale farms, it is necessary to consider the economical amount of irrigation.
I hope my answer has solved your question.
And thank you for your compliment.
      Have a nice day :)

    • @Algae_algae
      @Algae_algae  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello, this is Algae.
First of all, congratulations on the successful germination of your kumquat seeds.
Even though your kumquat has successfully germinated, it is expected that you have left a question because the growth rate is low. But don't worry. In my case, kumquats have germinated and have reached the 4th month, but they are diverse, ranging from 4 leaves to 8 leaves. Although they were sown on the same day, the growth rate was different for each individual. And, unlike annual plants such as lettuce or cabbage, trees, including citrus plants, do not grow dynamically. If you want to make it grow as fast as possible, I suggest providing a large pot and providing adequate moisture and nutrients (e.g. N, P, Ca, K) in an environment with sufficient light and temperature.
Even though the growth of kumquat is slow, if it grows constantly, it will produce beautiful flowers and fruits someday. There will come a day when kumquats will reward your heartfelt care, and there is a possibility that it will come in 3-5 years.
      I support your gardening.
      Have a nice day :)

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for leaving a nice question :)
The sprouts of kumquats, which start to grow from seed, need a maturity period until they bloom.
It is generally known that this maturity period requires at least three years or more.
By the way, the maturity of the kumquat does not mean that it will flower.
In order for a tree to flower, it needs to grow to a certain level or more, and it needs the proper number of leaves to support the flowers and fruits.
Some people are lucky enough to harvest the fruit three to five years after planting the seed.
However, even after growing kumquats for more than 10 years, the trees of the unlucky people do not bloom.
What is clear is that the kumquat tree flowered and produced fruit when the leaves were plentiful and the conditions suitable for growth (e.g. light, temperature, fertilizer) were provided.
I hope that your kumquat seeds germinate successfully, and giving you the joy of fruit harvesting.
      Have a nice day :)

Hi I've grown kumquat to about 3 inches,75mm postman/mailman knocked it over(outside for sun one day) leaves are falling off is it autumn or is it dying I've put a clear plastic bag over it ,or is it too much moisture, answer would be v. Helpful 😁 thanks

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thanks for telling your story :)
      What I understood is:
You have a 3 inch tall kumquat tree.
And when the pot was left outdoors, someone knocked it over (probably the postman's mistake).
Fortunately, the kumquat is unharmed, but the leaves are now falling (like fallen leaves in autumn).
You want to know the cause of this phenomenon, and you want a solution.
Kumquat is always a green leafy plant. Of course, the old leaves may fall off at the end of their lifespan. However, it is not normal for leaves to fall off, including those affected by disease, cold or dry stress.
I recommend you observe the tip of your kumquat tree. If the color of the shoot apical meristem (SAM), which the leaves are made, is green and fresh, even if the leaves have fallen, it will recover by forming new leaves. However, if the SAM is dry and not green, the kumquat tree is most likely dead. Either way, the best you can do is to keep the temperature warm (I recommend room temperature; 25℃) and keep the soil adequately moist.
I hope your kumquat tree is healthy again.
      Have a nice day :)

Will it ever make flowers and fruits? So far it hasn't blossomed.

    • @Algae_algae

      Hello, this is Algae.
Thank you for leaving a nice question :)
According to your description, your kumquat tree seems to have grown nicely.
In theory, your kumquat tree is thought to be ready to produce fruit already.
So it will flower and produce fruit.
Unfortunately, however, that a tree that has been grown for more than three years does not guarantee flowering and production of fruit.
There is a correlation between plant maturation and flowering, but an easy and simple approach to this seems to be very difficult.
Although many researchers have approached the mechanisms of flowering and are devising ways to utilize them, I know that the technology has not yet been disseminated to provide clear benefits (As I am not involved in research related to fruit production, I am not specifically aware of the extent of the development of technology related to this.).
Unfortunately, the only answer I can give to your question is that no one knows exactly when your kumquats first bloom.
And the only suggestion I can offer is to be patient and wait.
I hope your kumquats bloom soon.
      Have a good day :)
