  • For the past 4 years I have been riding a 27.5" wheel size, but I've been hearing an aweful lot about how far the 29ers have come, so thought I would give one a try today!

    As you all know, my Pumpkin was a bit under the weather recently (everyone was right about the small spacer btw! lol). Anyway, during this time, my buddy, subscriber, and patron, Joe, and I got together for a ride. Joe was kind enough to let me hop on his... er..... loaner bike so that I could get out on the trails and have some fun. It just so happens that his loaner is a carbon yeti!
    Today Joe and I are at Balm Boyette trails down in FL, a system that I have never been to despite it being very close to Alafia which I used to frequent.
    In the middle of the ride we realize that the best trail at the system is indeed closed, so instead of running to alafia, we got creative and hunted down some fun stuff to session, which lead to quite a bit of fun!
    This one definitely starts out with a bang, so grab a brewski and come along for the ride!
    MASSIVE Shoutout to Joe, aka Mr Tonka on here for getting my ass away from the computer and out for a ride. It was just what the doctor ordered.

    I'm enjoying the agility of my Rocky Mountain Altitude with 27.5 wheels but when I'm on the On One Parkwood 29er hardtail it just carries speed, maybe a little slower on acceleration but once up to speed it just eats whatever is in front, rocks and roots just shrink. That SB45 looks rad though, great to see the Yeti 29er in your vid. My dream bike.

    Florida gets a bad rap for mountain biking but that trail looked like a blast!
    Also gotta say I've been following your channel for about 8 months now and, other than your riding having gotten better in general, you've gotten so much smoother and make it look so effortless compared to when I first followed. It just shows that if you get out and ride, so much progress can be made and so much fun can be had. Thanks for all the inspiration! 🤘

    A 29er takes getting use to for handling. I ride a hardtail; Norco Storm 9.1 tricked to Deore 9 speed with Rockshox TK 30 Silver. It isn't a Veti but its the bomb to me! I find 29ers to ride well up hills. But close stopping in traffic, takes practice. Sometimes lifting the front end a touch to move around in single track...but its like riding a hot babe...let me tell you brother!!

  • @JamesStoup
    @JamesStoup 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    MRP is the bomb! 29ers are fun, but I always miss how nimble 27.5 is. Geo helps a lot with that though! I rode one of these at Angel Fire and was really impressed with how playful it was.

    I rode a Stumpie 29er for three years and then got a new Tallboy 27.5 plus wheel. I like both but riding that 29 Stumpie feels like driving a bread truck climbing and techy stuff. What I do like about the 29er is going downhill. It really rolls well and I like how I can feel the trail. The plus size tires really disconnect me from feeling the trail. The both have pros and cons.

    • @MrTonka
      @MrTonka 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really like the tweener size combo on the SB5. 2.5 up front and 2.3 out back. Good feel and plenty of traction with the perfect amount of forgiveness.

  • @LeAstrale
    @LeAstrale 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Have you considered a comparison to 27.5 plus bike also as it should sit somewhere inbetween 29 and 27.5 ?
    Great to see a more XC oriented trail as it reminds me a little more of the local trails ;)
    Can't wait until the next video Mr. Sampler! Until then, Live Free and Stay Stoked! (No riding hard without videos ;) )

    it's short, stift, short travel set up and those are some characteristics of an agile and responsive bike. i guess the wheels doesn't do that much or try testing it with other set-ups maybe you can tell the difference. it's always on the riders preference though :) nice footy man

    So cool you two synced up! Yeti's are for sure fun bikes. I love my SB5+ for steamrolling over the Austin chunk, but the SB4.5 is a super capable machine also. My only complaint with Yeti is that they are often taller that they are longer, so you have to oversize to get more reach.

    • @The_Sampler
      @The_Sampler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really does make it more playful. I'm just all torso, so I had to size up to the XL for a good fit on reach. It's still a great bike, I never regretted all the tears I shed when I looked at my bank account after buying it.

      Small. Alex and i are about 5'10" and the M is good for us. At 6' you'd go to a large. If you have monkey arms like Trail Features apparently does, you may want a M. ;)

    Hey Alex, you should do a loop through the Midwest after you get your van setup. Really good riding in Duluth and Copper Harbor. Bike parks in Wausau and outside of Milwaukee. A bunch of places in Michigan too.

    • @RealMJSr
      @RealMJSr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea, I went with the SB5 because of it's capability + wheel size. I'm relatively short at 5' 7" and the 27.5" felt much better than the 29" wheels. Now if this weather would start to go back to normal I can get out there and ride it.

    Another cool video. Glad you got to ride Boyette, that place is so much fun! Too bad Ridgeline was closed, that is probably the best trail of all the trails between Alaphia and Boyette. Hopefully it will be open Sunday when I'm out there.

    Much like clipless shoes, you have to commit to the 29’er, and get used to riding it, in order to see its full potential! After you spend some time in the saddle, you’ll see that it’s just as fast through the tight single track as the 27.5.

      I love my 4.5, and have been looking at the 5.5 for enduro. Problem is at 6'4" I don't want to run a long stem like I do on the 4.5, and would probably be a little cramped if I did. XXL Hightower LT is looking pretty good!

    • @BeastModeMTB
      @BeastModeMTB 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've for the 5.5 large, and its fit just right. i tried Hightower and Specialised enduro, but it seemed off. best way to find out is to try them all out (i was lucky enough to demo Intense, Yeti, Specialzed and Santa cruz, at the Cannock chase Trail centre, was brilliant) and the 5.5 was the right choice. The 5.5 does climb really well, with out getting tired, and DH its amazing, i smashed all the runs at Antur Stinoig, some of the sketchy sections, the 29 wheels helped so much along with 160 travel. but yeah try it before you buy it. :)
