I remember playing this when it came out. Not even close to the fun of Lords of the Realm 2. Most players agreed and shelved this version. Archers Ho!! Miss that.
I remember as a kid when I got this game I was so excited to have the third game. After installing it, I disliked it so much that after 30 min of playing it I uninstalled it and went back to lords of the realm 2.
It is better if you don't go into the game expecting a straight sequel. The design philosophy is a Lords of the Realm game that can multiplayer and can be completed in an afternoon. And this game delivered that. For example, the game has a soft stop at 3 hours, where the ULTRA powerful vassals show up, such as the arch angels (Uriel, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael) or the 4 Riders (War Pestilence, you get it). This will break a stallmate, since the Vassals are unique (if one player gets them the other does not). For those complaining about RNG, there is NO RNG in the vassals. There was a excel spreadsheet somewhere where the requirements were listed. Once you met those, the vassal will showup, UNLESS some other player beat you to the punch. Therefore you must decide on scales and move their fast. Church or no Church? If no church, start pillaging fast to lower it, you can even pillage your own lands. If Church, get a Cathedral up ASAP and defend it. Honor or no Honor? If so hire mercenaries fast. Chivalry? Ransom off all your prisoner. ETC. This is because the faster you reach the extremes, the faster you unlock the more powerful vassals, who will help you unlock even more powerful vassals. Vassal placement is also crucial. It is good to make a breadbasket region with a manor and vassals that boost food to feed your armies. Use Cities or Castles to ring it to keep it safe. As someone who played Lords 1 and 2, I get the disappointment, but keep an open mind and appreciate it for what it does. I was one of the few players who played this multiplayer, and the design shines through there. The soft 3 hour cap also was greatly appreciated. The 4 angels can be merged into a 10 unit doom stack, while the riders are more powerful individually. 2 Doom stacks fighting is very fun. Also design your own castle. The base designs are pretty bad.
Seems to me that anyone that played LOTR , Magic edition and LOTR2 will not enjoy this game. It is a more simplified game designed to bring in more sales for less hardcore players. That being said in a year like 2018 LOTR3 IS hardcore. Anybody that started the series with this game probably loves it. Just like all good games the next games het more simplified for a larger audience and higher profit margin.
I never found out how to play LOTR1 but i think LOTR2 was already a very simplified game since all your production was resumed to a single bar(food or manufacture(we could chose which weapon btw)) and if you want to go for cows or grain. This game is actually completely different its hard to call it a sequel, there is no production, no population or random disasters. All we have is a army randomly generated, completely luck based, since all their numbers/conditions/weapons are diferent. Also since there is little to do with production, expanding fast is the only strategy to go, the city management will not slow down your gameplay, so its all about gathering the army and attack. Even though its a battle oriented game, controls are terrible and sometimes irresponsive. Maybe if you play a lot you eventually learn how deal with this, but one thing is learning features that are expected from the game, when you say: what is this for? oh! instead of finding bugs and having to deal with them so we can play as it is expected, the AI is also idiot, as we climb the wall they dont even try to defend, i dont think there is much to do/learn in this game. That's why i dont like it

No more cows :( Now gold is the only resource and there is little use to it: hire mercenary(kind of limited), retrieve captured vassals and castle upgrades. Fights look a lot like total war games, i don't really like it. But yes we have to fight everything we encounter, no skip button. i will try to record it all, but it's not such an easy game as they say.

If you play a custom game on impossible difficulty it becomes very challenging. Ok, let´s see how you finish it. The graphic doesn´t look that good, even for a 2004 game. You can also try Lords of the Realms 1, this is also more complicated than Lords 2. There is also a GOG version of it.
On LOTR2 time limit would be terrifing i don't remember this option though, but advanced agriculture actually makes the game easier, it's production is much more efficient, you get more food and also saves turns for blacksmith and other resource gathering. On battle mode you can abuse archer to win it's just too strong. I tried LOTR1 a long time ago and i couldn't play it, the interface is far from being friendly. I don't think i will be playing it.
You can activate the time limit in the menu IIRC. Ok, but the campaign is easy anyways :P Yes, the balance is strange, and knights have less armor than cheap pikemen... Yes, getting used to LOTR1 seems to be difficult. It also has really annoying music :P
LOTR3 was SUCH a shit ass let down, I pretty much wasted my fuckin money playing this trash heap. What they SHOULD have done was make the style exactly like LOTR2 BUT have more of everything in it, more weapon types, more castle types, more resource types, more shit to by at the stage coach merchant...ect THAT would have been amazing
