Something people should consider. I bought a 2000 3.5 ( 6) years ago. The vehicle wad an one owner ( older couple). They put just over 200,000 miles on it. Bought , put rebuilt trans in. That transmission seized my engine 40 miles after picking it up. Found a Ammoco Mech that actually knew the transmission, rebuild it and got a 50,000 plus Honda Passport Engine replacement. Hey johnny. New to your channel. I just recently acquired a 86 trooper 2.3 5 spd 4wd. It needs a few things. So far I've learned a lot from you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
So I inherited a February 1989, trooper two door short RS with 170,000 miles on it. I was told the motor is seized. I’ve recovered it from the barn it was in and I’m just wondering what I should do with this thing. It’s all original factory wheels. Learn a lot about this car just listening to you. Thank you My ultimate goal would be to restore this car back to its full original working condition as I don’t think there’s a lot of these out there Looking for some advice Thank you Johnny for all your knowledge vehicle
Much love from Costa Rica. These trucks are extremely popular here and people don't want to get rid of them because of how tough they are. Trying to negotiate with a fine gentleman in order to get one. Cheers
I have a 1994 Isuzu trooper sports with a 3.2L automatic, I had problems with trans when I bought it, cause it was leaking bad but got under control been a good suv ever since
I still have my 91 trooper. I've had many 4x4 vehicles over the years, and I still consider my trooper the best 4x4 out of them all, hands down! Finding parts are almost impossible. Cant even find them in junk yards. Do you know what price running troopers go for those days? I do have some rust on mine, but my grey interior is in awesome shape. I just put a new clutch in mine. My trooper is a 2.8 litter v6, and has a 5 speed manual transmission.
I have a '91 2.8L bought brand new off the lot. I have rebuilt the top end with a 4.3L throttle body, roller rocker arms with more throw, and other little upgrades. Took off the mechanical fan and replaced it with a low-profile electric fan (needed to put in a camero water-pump/pulley for clearance) with a custom made fan shroud. Upgraded the front brakes off of a '95 rodeo. Rebuilt the entire rear suspension. Thinking I might need to upgrade the entire engine to a 3.1 or V8 soon as oil pressure isn't there at idle (warm) or while cruising 90ish MPH on the freeway. Love your work/videos!
"The first generation Isuzu Trooper was introduced in Japan for the 1981 model year. Offered with a variety of engine and transmission options, the Trooper was also offered in numerous body styles: a two-door soft top utility roadster model, a 3-door long wheelbase model, a 3-door short wheelbase model, and a 5-door long wheelbase model. Isuzu changed the front grille and headlights from round to rectangular in 1987, and introduced a premium LS trim for the 5-door LWB models that added cruise control, automatic windows, folding seats, and other upgrades. The Trooper was upgraded to disc brakes at all four wheels for the 1988 model year. The first generation Trooper was sold in the US from 1984-1991. It was available in 3 and 5-door LWB configurations from 1984-1986. The 3-door LWB configuration was dropped in 1987, with the 5-door LWB continuing through the end of 1991 production. For the 1989 model year only, the US got a limited production run of 3-door SWB models, called the Trooper RS. It's reported that fewer than 800 RS's were imported for 1989."
Johnny, do you have a shop? Your knowledge of Troopers is obviously extensive. I am in the market for a first generation. Is there a way to reach out to you with some questions?
You make some pretty surprising generalizations - some of which are a big puzzle to this long time owner. I drove my 91 Trooper (4-banger w/ 5 speed) for more than 200 K miles. During that time I replaced the injectors once and the head gasket once. It never burned oil and the valves seemed to never require adjustment. I regret selling it now, but the oil leaks were making me crazy. I should have paid someone to pull the engine and replace some gaskets. However, I'd had such a terrible experience with "pros" where I live I couldn't bring myself to trust them to do anything correctly.
MrTriple3 you had one experience. I pull my data from dozens of my own experiences and thousand of experiences of fellow trooper owners as well as from the Isuzu Yoda Jerry Lemond....
Spare parts for the diesel engine you mentioned, C223-T, are plentiful as the normally aspirated version is still common in reefers, gensets, forklifts, etc. The parts that are hard to find are the exhaust manifold and turbocharger. I've got this engine with a vnt-turbo from a VW Passat in a 1977 Jeep Cherokee with 5.38:1 and 33"s and it runs pretty good, slow but reliable.
Wish i would have seen this video 2 months ago. On Sept 6th i bought an 86 trooper 2 door with the 2.3 L and 5 speed. So far it runs good but powerless . it has the Weber carb conversion. Frame is rusty but not rotted , yet, Who knows maybe i'll sell it and not worry about it anymore.
Your yard looks like my brother's. He's got about 14 at this point. Happy to hear you like the 2.8 cause i bought a 91 v6 5 speed from my bro a few months ago. I'm assuming you had to fabricate a bellhousing adapter for the Toyota v8? Wouldn't mind some more power, as I'm currently building mine out for some long road trips around America. Thanks for all the info you put out!
1989 v6 5 speed. near full running gear overhaul. Set up & outfitted for self recovery & overlanding. Patagonia Milestars, 9000 winch & custom winch bumper, Towbar, highlift farm jack mounted to its rooftop cargo rack, ETC. 194000 miles runs & drives perfect. Not pretty with a rust free frame, not even a scuff. upper NE Wash. State. I am a newly disabled veteran mechanic. PS, This "was" worn out garbage & it ran & drove perfect Before my overhaul.. AKA be carefull.
I know this is an old video but i saw a 87 trooper with a 2.3 litre 5 speed transmission are these reliable? Its a southern no rust for 3k. I didnt hear anything on this engine so im curious is this just another odd thing about this year? Also its a two door!
Hello John I found a first-generation trooper 84 in northern Mexico, do u think I can still get parts for it, for instance, it needs both front signal lights and some other inside parts. you mentioned on our video the a webber carburator can be fitted , by the way thanks a lot for your videos greetings from Mexico
my trooper blew out smoke yesterday haha. but the alternator on it had gone to shit. this would be my first trooper 91 v6 5 speed i fucking love it so much. thanks for the information man was interesting to hear about some of this!!
Hay Johnny Thanks for the sharing your knowledge on first generation troopers , love your videos . I notice you don’t mention the 4jb1 2.8 turbo diesel at all ? In Ireland this is all we have and I would regards them as one of the best engines ever made with great fuel economy good power output and unbeatable reliability. Do you not get these in the US ? Also I’m doing a complete nut and bolt restoration on a 89 swb and just wondering about the camber adjustment slips . Do you have any info on setting this up ? Thanks
The only diesel we got in the US was the C223. I didn't mention the 2.8 or 3.1 because I have very limited knowledge of these and absolutely no experince with them
Johnny - got a 1991 LS from a neighbor for free - it has 260k on it. I got the pine needles off the car and buffed the body to a nice shine. Fixed the radiator leak, got almost all the systems up and it is in good shape but have not road tested it yet. Soooo....it has an automatic. It is in the shop for new tires (bashed fender i will fix and will mount a winch) is there any check and see you would recommend for the automatic? Is a flush necessary? Looking forward to give this girl a good home~~!
It's not worth rebuilding the 2.3 or 2.6 motors. Even if it does just need a head gasket, there's no good reason to keep it. Just do an engine swap and get a GM 2.8, 3.1 or 3.4. The 4L30e might be a shitty auto, but with the GM motor, you now have access to a 700R4 (or 4l60e) which is a much better gearbox. Not sure about clearance with the 1st gen, but some gentle tapping with a hammer on the trans pan will give you enough room for the front driveshaft to clear the transmission and keep the stock t-case. The other swap option is a 3.8l V6 from the 4th gen Camaro. Even though its a 90 degree V6, it uses the GM metric (60 degree) bellhusing bolt pattern.
So I'm in the process of buying a '90 model that has a blown head gasket. I'm gonna swap the motor with a R2.8 Cummins. Is this something that can fit? Also, is there any forums that can help as well?
Hi . I Finally found someone here on YT that knows his stuff . I'm looking tomorrow on 01 auto 132K mint condition LS with new timing water pump suspension etc .. for probably $2.8K. Sounds like you suggesting to stay away from it . Im not planing on over-sizing the tires or towing anything . I was mainly driven by good AWD reputation and it does have good reviews . What is your opinion on this situation . What should I look for if something is off ?
Hey Johnny, I have 91 trooper and I'm fixing her up, I've got the one with the S10 v6 with manual 5spd and 4x4, I've got the engine and drive train where it needs to be, Painted, new tires and rims and my problem is I need to replace Tail lights, can't find any where. Can you direct me where to look for them, Thanks for any help.
It has grown on me, I absolutely love it now I honestly love working on it , finding parts is the hardest part. Out of my 5 vehicles it's the most fun.
Great video. Good to know my 89 LS 2.6 5 speed is a keeper. How long do you figure a new head gasket will last on a 2.6? I've put just over 1000 miles on mine so far. Thanks again.
Hey, Johnny. I just bought an 87 Topper 2 (totally dig it) and I've been looking all over tp find out how many miles it gets on a full tank. Any idea? Cheers.
I am in the United Arab Emirates and we don't have many of the Troopers for sale here. I have a chance to get a very clean and well maintained 2002 3.2 v6 Manual. Whats your thoughts on this model? Anything i should be careful of? or good to buy? Thanks
I have to disagree with th he 2nd gen comment, I have a 1998 with the 3.5L and AR5 5 speed manual and it's been a great rig. I also own a 1989 2.6L 5 speed and an 1988 Space Cab so I love my Isuzus!
Damn Johnny...raining on my parade! My dad owns a 1990 LS and like you said, the auto transmission is meh...slips a lot when it's first turned on, but smooths out after a few miles...and the motor seems strong. But the truck itself is in amazing condition and he wants to give it to me, so... Is it worth getting a rebuilt tranny (how many miles should I expect that to hold up?) or is converting to a manual tranny even a a reasonable solution? Anyways, great video...thanks for your time and info.
@@thelagmeister how costly is a conversion to a manual transmission? What should I expect to pay? PS - My dad is 80 and I'm 42...but I do feel like a kid.
@@TheRealitarian Fair enough. Ok first things first I would check the fluid. Change the transmission fluid if you haven't already. Easiest option keep your transmission alive FOREVER. Don't flush it unless isuzu says so. Just keep changing the fluid. Let it warm up for a minute or two before you take off it might help. Never believe in miracle fixes. Anyways you will need 1. Manual transmission 2. Manual transmission Computer for engine. 3. Pedal assembly 4. Clutch cable and slave cylinder . You might need to cut out holes in a few places and fabricate mounts for certain things. My buddy did a conversion on his datsun and the automatic and manual transmissions had different wheel bases meaning the pedal assembly from the manual didn't exactly fit in the automatic wheelbase. Some things might not plug in like the speedometer for example. That's minimum and some vehicles its just not worth it. Sometimes it's much easier to keep what you have. Worst come to worst get a reman or a junkyard transmission.
@@thelagmeister Great answer...wasn't thinking about some of those things at all...novice here...as far as a junkyard transmission, would I be looking for that same transmission or is there something else that would fit that is perhaps a better option for the money? If I got a reman or rebuild, how long do you think that transmission would last on average? Are those kind of like having a new transmission? Or are they just short term solutions? Thanks for that info...I appreciate your time responding to me.
DLX is 4 door Lx is 2 door and Ls will have a big badge on the back. you can also look up the vin, it should be located on the dash right infront of the steering wheel
My first one was an 89 2.8 5spd. I miss it to this day but I'm looking at an 88 2.6. I'd love to get it and swap the motor as you've done. I'll be following now.
Johnny I have been watching your videos for at least 8 yrs... I am about to buy a Acura slx 1996..with 170,000 miles...craigslist ...the owner says the only issue is overheating... he has replaced the thermo/and thermo housing...and still acting up...it's only a grand and in good condition ... what should I look for...are what is you advice... I value it like a diamond! Thanks on advance...Zack
Just bought a 97 and has a transmission problem. How to start off in low and manually move through the gears. Is there a way to fix this without a trans swap?
I have an opportunity to buy a 86 2 door trooper. engine is a turbo diesel with a 5 speed. problem is it may have broke a rod. guy has another diesel engine for it but it is not turbo charged. can the turbo from one be placed on the non-turboed engine with out a lot of problems. not going to do anything wild with it just fix it up and drive it around town and use it as my hunting rig. can I swap in the regular diesel with out any problems.
Eric. Check all of your vacuum lines. Google "isuzu pickup vacuum diagram" Advance Autoparts's website has good diagrams. My 1990 2.3L Pup would surge at idle, revving up, then down until it nearly died, then back up. At least until it had been driven/heated up.
Hey Johnny, I have watched you for some time now and I know that you are quite the trooper professor. I am the original owner of a 97 Trooper. It has little over 100k on the clock. It still looks great, better than most. But, the engine sometimes just dies when I am sitting in traffic or at a light. The engine will start right up after such an event. I have had a mechanic look into it. He checked the idle sensor, cleaned out the throttle body and put a cleaner in the gas. But it still happens. No codes show up. He is at a loss for explanations. It runs fine most of the time. 3.2 engine. Any thoughts???
I don't know much about troopers but your symptoms are indicative of such things you got a heat issue you have fuel is getting warm and you have electronics are getting warm when you're sitting you're also dealing with the fuel pressure and you're dealing with the air flow through air flow sensors being different so your mechanic sucks you need to get another mechanic that's your first job
I have a 1990 Trooper AND put a rebuilt engine and new 4x4 transmisión., Im going to put carpet and tapizar the interior ,also im gong yo repaint It. Dame color. Hope that mecanics AND painter also tapizadores of my city ( Tijuana México) work good.
Im looking to upgrade my 86 suspension. Do u recommend a frame swap for me. Im fine with building it. Probly gonna upgrade the engine. But ive noticed nothing dits the 86 damn near
Someone in my town is selling a 86 2 door with a rebuilt engine. Just looking for something reliable to drive in the winter, any advice or pros/cons would be much appreciated.
Johnny5ive My husband already wanted to kill me when I turbo charged my FRS, I can only imagine the look on his face if I mentioned I wanted to V8 swap the Isuzu. Don't get me killed Johnny5 I'm too young to die haha.

I got a 1988 5 speed 4x4 2.6. hoping it grows on me. I miss my rodeo.that v8 now I'd love to try that. I need to learn how to weld
There's no consistency. It may last 20 years or it could blow tomorrow.
looking at a 91 5speed right now :- )
What about 3.5 with a 5 speed manual in a 01
Hey, Johnny. I just bought an 87 Topper 2 (totally dig it) and I've been looking all over tp find out how many miles it gets on a full tank. Any idea? Cheers.
How Wires Tangle 400 max
I am in the United Arab Emirates and we don't have many of the Troopers for sale here. I have a chance to get a very clean and well maintained 2002 3.2 v6 Manual. Whats your thoughts on this model? Anything i should be careful of? or good to buy? Thanks
New ones aren’t good
I have to disagree with th he 2nd gen comment, I have a 1998 with the 3.5L and AR5 5 speed manual and it's been a great rig.
Hey kid. I think your bicycle will hold up longer than that transmission.
@@TheRealitarian Oh and Expect to pay wayyy too much if someone else is doing it . You could probably buy 2-3 of those manual troopers for the cost.
Hi, my neighbor has a 1986 Isuzu Trooper and he wants to know if it is a DLX, LS, or LX. How can we tell the trim level?
DLX is 4 door Lx is 2 door and Ls will have a big badge on the back. you can also look up the vin, it should be located on the dash right infront of the steering wheel
I have a 1988 trooper 11 5 speed,$200,000 miles runs great $2,000 cash
2,000 cash
Should i get a 96 trooper for 800$
My first one was an 89 2.8 5spd. I miss it to this day but I'm looking at an 88 2.6. I'd love to get it and swap the motor as you've done. I'll be following now.
You also have the option of a 3.1 diesel engine imported from Japan a freind ordered one had from clutch fan to tail shaft
Did you find one yet? Thinking about selling mine - rjonw@yahoo.com
@@rjonw Where are you located?
I’m looking at ‘88-90 and debating between Auto or Manual. Are the Autos reliable enough?
The 4 cyl auto is as reliable as the 5 speed
Johnny I have been watching your videos for at least 8 yrs... I am about to buy a Acura slx 1996..with 170,000 miles...craigslist ...the owner says the only issue is overheating... he has replaced the thermo/and thermo housing...and still acting up...it's only a grand and in good condition ... what should I look for...are what is you advice... I value it like a diamond! Thanks on advance...Zack
Since the 2.8 was available in the Cherokee XJ, would it be possible to swap a Jeep 2.5? What 5-speed was used and the gen1 trooper?
What do you think of the 1999 3.0 td citation?
Thankyou.
Just bought a 97 and has a transmission problem. How to start off in low and manually move through the gears. Is there a way to fix this without a trans swap?
What year would you recommend if you were doing an engine swap?
I have an opportunity to buy a 86 2 door trooper. engine is a turbo diesel with a 5 speed. problem is it may have broke a rod. guy has another diesel engine for it but it is not turbo charged. can the turbo from one be placed on the non-turboed engine with out a lot of problems. not going to do anything wild with it just fix it up and drive it around town and use it as my hunting rig. can I swap in the regular diesel with out any problems.
john pike yes
Hey Johnny I jest bought a 89 pickup and the temp sensor doesn’t work and it runs like shit at idle but runs fine when driving are they related.
Eric.
Check all of your vacuum lines. Google "isuzu pickup vacuum diagram" Advance Autoparts's website has good diagrams. My 1990 2.3L Pup would surge at idle, revving up, then down until it nearly died, then back up. At least until it had been driven/heated up.
Man I wanna get another 87 trooper but a 2 door this time.
I have a 97 and its beautiful but same problem. Waiting on a reply.
I don't know much about troopers but your symptoms are indicative of such things you got a heat issue you have fuel is getting warm and you have electronics are getting warm when you're sitting you're also dealing with the fuel pressure and you're dealing with the air flow through air flow sensors being different so your mechanic sucks you need to get another mechanic that's your first job
its gotta be the IAC
On the 91, will the v6's blow head gaskets as well??
No. The 91 V6 engine is bulletproof...
I have a 1990 Trooper AND put a rebuilt engine and new 4x4 transmisión., Im going to put carpet and tapizar the interior ,also im gong yo repaint It. Dame color. Hope that mecanics AND painter also tapizadores of my city ( Tijuana México) work good.
what about a 2002 johnny5ive
How the fuck do you know all this. Right on. Thanks.
