- Ingredients:
1 mug of split chickpea
2 and 1/2 mugs of water
3 tbs of cooking oil
2 small bay leaves
1 tsp of cumin seeds
2 medium size sliced onions
1 tbs of ginger and garlic paste
2 medium size sliced tomatoes
1 tsp of coriander powder
1/2 tsp of cumin powder
1/2 tsp of red chilli powder
3/4 tsp of turmeric powder
1/4 tsp of garam masala
3 green chillies, chopped
chopped coriander leaves
salt to taste

I've always watched Indian aunties cooking but they always do a 'pinch' no such thing as measuring spoons so for years my efforts were not good as I did not know the proportions. I made this tonight - and it was delicious! My husband gave it 9/10. Thank you for your instant pot instructions. It was fast and easy!!!

I added some spiced onions and red chilli paste on top of the regular onions instead of green chillies as I had none. This dish was nice it takes some extra seasoning for me but very nice thank you

Really thankful to have found your daal video. I love daal and though my mum gave me her recipe, it wasn’t turning out as I’d like. When I tried it your way, it has been amazing! Really appreciate you taking the time to make this video as I know it wasn’t easy to make videos. This is my fav go to recipe for daal when my hubby is out and I just want home made daal!

i read in a blog that we have to drain it with water a couplr times and then keep it soaked in hot water for like an hour and then start cooking it.

@@NewBalance-pu8ft That's not true. You can use oil in pressure cookers, as a matter of fact it's best to use some kind of fat when making beans to keep the foaming down.

If you boil the daal in haldi for 10-15 min and drain the water and then cook it in masala it turns out better.

Right now cooking it, and after 15 minutes, (4 times whistled) I turned off the cooker, tried, and still hard. Covered back and will cook it for 10 more minutes to be soft.
Do we need to soak the chana dal overnight or can we use it straight...wash and use . please clarify. Also do we need to slightly roast hte chana dal before hand ?

Oil does not produce steam and you need far higher temperatures to boil oil which a pressure cooker will not be able to reach. ... You can use any type of oil or butter in a pressure cooker and if you need to fry off your ingredients before they cook under pressure, this is perfectly safe and acceptable.
First ingredient looks alot more than 3 TBS of cooking oil, or is it just me?
