The charging protocol allows for sudden unplug without arcing because the pilot signal disconnects and the EVSE is supposed to open the supply contactor to isolate the current before the main current pins reach the point where they disconnect as they are longer than the pilot connector.
Quite right Richard there should be an interlock circuit which should tell the OBC/ BMS/ EVSE to shut down charging way before the H/V contacts un couple.
With the Type 2 standard the car first manipulates the CP signal to indicate stop charging, then open its contactor and the charger will do the same which means both the connector and the inlet are de-energized and only then the mechanical lock should release. This is quite dangerous and will wear out the contacts quickly. Big FAIL.
The sense pin is shorter. If you pull it slowly, it should disconnect while the hot pins still are connected. Also, not all Type-2 wall boxes have locking pin.

I do have to say that that emergency unlock is in a convenient location. On my Ioniq that is a 2 man job and due to the length and routing of the cable, pulling it is very difficult and you have 0 feedback on the cable itself.

Would the charge port at Scandic made more sense (shorter cord length) if you had backed into the parking stall? I am glad things worked out in the end.
In theory the PP pin should disconnect first and the charge should stop. Maybe this EVSE is broken. I had the same problem with my GO-E Charger once, probably a stuck relay, was delivering power all the time, even when unplugged. The Kona does a similar thing like the NIO btw once you unlock the car it unlocks the port and only charges with 0.5 kW. After a short time it locks the port again and charges at full speed again. Regarding the emergency release: Every car must have one, so people just have to RTFM.
Damn i'd love a 15m type 2 to type 1 cable, unfortunately they only sell 5 meter ones here and sometimes they feel a bit limiting. Do you know of any Norwegian/european sites that might ship internationally we could order from?
Bit of a PR nightmare for NIO, think this is the first time I’ve seen an EV have a break down …. you nearly got to find out “what the heck is this for, is it a weapon” was for 🤣
its really not a problem. every car can break. that is not the problem you should focus on. the trick is to look at how the company is resolving the issue. and that is what they are doing very well.

There was a big EV (named something with "E"), quite new and SUV like, that was stuck for 4-5 days on a charge port in southern Denmark. Nobody knew how to get that fixed. They called the danish seller and importer of the car. From what I heard, the foreign support finally got back and told them how to fix it but several days later. This might be the EV, since it was like 1 or 2 weeks ago and a very similar problem.

fun fact: the reason you dont smell the arcing on other j1772 EVSE's is because the trigger doubles as a circuit break. Disengaging the clasp always cuts power to the EVSE
Interesting info. This is a mennekes, as long as I can see. As long as I know, this connector has the 3 phase pins, a ground pin, a communication pin and a safety pin. The safety pin is designed to be the last on make contact when plugging and the first to detach when unplugging. As long as i know, this allows the high voltage to be turned off quickly if you pull the plug suddenly. However, maybe there's still some voltage if the unplug is so fast and that's the smell origin. Do you agree?
There is a Proximity Pilot pin and a Control Pilot pin. Both the connector side and the inlet side are disconnected from electricity. Only when the connector is inserted AND the car as locked the connector to the charge port the charger energizes the connector. Mennekes is the German manufacturer who developed this system which is now called Type 2 in most countries and with the same protocol but different connector Type 1 in the US. Check out Open EVSE for more info.
@@Robcomesana Happy to help. There is so much misinformation but it is important to know whats going on when things go wrong. I actually build a Type 2 charger with the charge rate adjusted according to the solar input of my off grid system. So i had to learn a few things.
Just watch the whole thing. Nio said it always had that problem. But even if it did. You know. It's like why would I buy a car that might break itself through the simplest mistake, if you can even call it that? I pull the cord on my pc, if that killed it - bad design, right? It's like, look I can kill myself by licking my nose.
@@392redienhcs that is not what he said. He said It is this particular car that NIO knew it had an issue and parked it deep in the garage (in other words NiO knew the car should not have been lent to him) due to miscommunication the press department somehow lent this particular car to him. If this is really the case, then to me it is not the car’s problem but the company’s communication/management problem. So I take it as an isolated incident.
In case the charge port does in fact not lock properly an emergency override would be hilarious. I mean you just can't do it. Pull out AC with 11kW already is extremely dangerous. Now do it with 100kW, you will fry the complete thing.
Hey Bjorn. There is one point about EVs I don’t hear you talk about in your videos which is very important. The difference between permanent magnet motors and induction magnet motors. In. Permanent magnet motor the motor rotates and uses electric the whole time but in an induction motor the motor can be turned off. This is what Tesla have got so right which other manufacturers (eg Audi etron) are still getting wrong. Tesla have an induction magnet motor in the front and a permanent magnet motor in the back. The induction magnet motor turns off when not needed and is highly efficient and gets lots of range. The Etron is inefficient because it uses all permanent magnet motors. Just something you might want to consider and point out in your reviews. Keep up the good work Bjorn
Like Bjorn said he has talked about this many times, and what's more this is not the only reason why aTesla is more efficient than the fat e-tron. There's lots of factors some of which being that the (fat) e-tron is based on a fossil burner platform and is not very aerodynamic, and it's also quite heavy in comparison to Teslas which are ground-up EVs, with special aerodynamic features and less weight.
They cannot be turned off, as they are just a box with a type 2 socket. Normaly its not harmful for the car, I do it at home all the time and there is no spark or bad smell..
@@Pervypriest Normally it's not harmful? Yes it is harmful as long electricity is going through it. Every other car stops the charging first, then of course it is not harmful.
The Type 2 protocol normally de-energizes the connector prior the car releasing the lock. If the lock gets overridden you should switch off the charger first. But the CP Pin is shorter than the power pins and loss of contact with the car will de-energize the connector. Therefore pull out the connector very slowly until you hear the dropping contactor inside the charger wnd then pull out completely.
@@abraxastulammo9940 It should be less than a second. The contactor in the charger disconnects usually immediately after missing the signal from the CP pin. The pin is about 10mm shorter so there is some time after loose the signal until the power pins loose their connection.
Well, Bjorn... I guess you've "made it" as a reviewer. The Nio Damage Control Squad is definitely keeping an eye on your channel comments, judging by the responses to my initial comment.
Arcing is really not safe for the user and even worse for the vehicle. This would not pass certification guess there are something that need to be sorted.
2.5 bar seems fairly low tire pressure for such a huge car. No influence on consumption? And the chargin port thing is of course a total no go, not only the fail but mainly the Type 2 unplugging... jeez that will most probably kill car electricity , wont it? Feel sorry for you and esp your wifey in such cold weather...
Really enjoying your trip vlogs, I’m learning a lot on the way in the pros and cons of EVs. Thank you 🙏 It also struck me that a pro of EVs is that you can use electrical gadgets (eg camera, phones) around ‘electric pumps’ which is a no-no around ‘fossil fuel pumps’ ;)
Removing charge plug with small current is no issue. It works the same in Hyundai Kona -21, when you unlock the car, it drops the charging power to 500w. With 500w, chargeport is unlocked and you can just pull the plug. So I think it is intended to be like that. Other than that, sorry for the problems you had with this huge Chinese truck!
Nio owns it..and fix the problem.. I’m a shareholder..still as committed… As oppose to another famous EV where the window flew off and refused to take care of the problem until the owner went to the press…
This is not a known issue! It is isolated to that specific vehicle, which shouldn’t have left the lot, but unfortunately these things happen to everybody. The good thing is that NIO stepped up and took care of the user not because he’s a TH-camr, but because he was in a NIO. Safe travels.
I would not advise pulling the plug whilst charging. The break in the supply can cause a transient voltage spike which is not desirable on electronics. There will be some protection against this, none the less its not something you want to deliberately create.
What a weird fail at the chargeport. Seriously. My Ioniq original unlocks the chargeport with the car, but the charging continues until you begin pulling it out and the, I assume, datacables loses connection first - then it stops the charging without requiring extra button presses... Or doing things the Chinese way of just not caring.
A friend recently bought a Volvo EV. Lifelong Volvo customer. The Volvo dealer convinced her that if she bought a Tesla she could only charge at Tesla chargers and she'd be in big trouble. The Volvo was OK in the city as she charged on AC at home. Then she decided to try it on a 200 mile road trip. She stopped multiple places but couldn't find anywhere to charge the Volvo that actually worked and ended up in an expensive hotel that had an AC charger. So a 4 hour trip ended up taking almost 2 days. For what the Volvo cost she could have bought a Tesla Model Y LR and would have easily completed the trip without even having to charge. If she did have to charge the Tesla it would have been simple as there were several Superchargers on her route. I don't think she'll buy another Volvo.

Of course any technology product can break, so I am very curious about the definitive diagnosis and solution NIO will provide. It will definitely help put things in perspective, though this is a very unfortunate event in the introduction phase of this NIO in Europe. Anyway I can't agree with others about the good service of NIO by paying you for the stay in the hotel, costs of the stay and a flight back to Oslo. It sounds to me as if NIO wants to buy it off with an easy solution, money is obviously not the problem. I'd expected a solution with a replacement car so that you and your wife could have extended your trip to Lyngen. I know Oslo is far away from Narvik, and the servicepoint in the network of NIO is most probably far away. But if changing cars takes too long, couldn't a rental car have been a better solution? Anyway, kudo's for you to share the bad news with all of us and staying the independent journalist you are. And for NIO I hope they will provide us a better answer to build trust in their product, because like a lot of other followers of your channel I can hardly believe this solution is going to be a standard one for every NIO user not being a journalist / influencer of your status. Yea I remember when TSLA had its first deaths due to their so call automated driving technology. I said the same too. Huge Failure. And TSLA still selling cars to people all over the world as of date. Can we really trust TSLA...still?
no company make 100% no failure products. The important this is how they handle the situation. Look at how many problems Tesla has when they first sell car in the US. It looks like they handle the problem quite well. Paid for the hotel, food and airfares.
@@KT-lp1ek Well that’s expected since automated driving was fairly new. I personally would only use that with extreme caution, that’s just common sense. Tesla is known for having low build quality, at least cars built in America. It’s only now that you see the quality standard you expect thanks to the Chinese factories. I know for a fact that many EV customers avoid Tesla based on quality but it’s overall a great car and from what I know, they never had charging issues.

I am putting it up for sale as soon as it comes out of the garage. I have actually put a deposit on Audi q4 etron 40. I just hope real service is there in the after sale.

But they all refused as apparently Tesla won't release parts.
It's hard to go on long trips with vehicles that nobody can fix. It's great as long as everything works. Even if parts were available most garages wouldn't know what to do.

When (hopefully) Nio have better charging speeds, camp and doge mode, I would maybe consider buying it. But for now, Tesla is way better and I probably would even choose the Hongqi e-hs9 over the Nio.
If nio tech is wrong i cannot image how wrong honqi could be
@@pawelzebrowski683 maybe so. But Hongqi have made pretty good quality cars for a long time. And it’s just way more luxurious and even bigger in size. Price is about the same as the Nio here in Norway.
I do have to say that that emergency unlock is in a convenient location. On my Ioniq that is a 2 man job and due to the length and routing of the cable, pulling it is very difficult and you have 0 feedback on the cable itself.
It my be convenient but my first reaction though is what state is that cable going to be in after 5 10 years? That's just going to rust, and if I'm having to emergency release the charging cable, I don't want the emergency release giving up as well.
10:00 I guess the European green Fanta has different flavor than the Thai green Fanta, so this shop import them from Thailand that is very far from Norway.
Ha! Nice! We also had a stop over at Thaikjøkken in Narvik on our road trip a couple of weeks ago. Thai take away seems super common in Norway. We were barely able to find any "normal" Thai restaurant during our travel.
Hi Bjorn, sorry for you and wifey, you can't travel as planed. At least Nio takes the costs on theyr charge. Can you estimate whats the Problem with the Locker, software- or hardwareissue?

The angle of that emergency release cord is a bit weird though. They need to rethink that.
It's nice that it will still low current AC charge with a failed lock. When the e-lock fails in an Ioniq you just flat out can't charge it at all. :-(
Damn i'd love a 15m type 2 to type 1 cable, unfortunately they only sell 5 meter ones here and sometimes they feel a bit limiting.
@@SupremeRuleroftheWorld - sending a car out with a journalist, with 240,000 subscribers who focuses on EV cats, that has a known fault… not good PR.
Yes they have resolved it brilliantly for Bjorn, let’s hope all customers can expect similar levels of support should they suffer problems… I hope they do t as NIO is an interesting brand with a radical idea in the battery swap.

Do you know why it is standard with a schuko charging cable in ID.4 GTX in Norway but not in Sweden ??
if it’s standard the price increases. i only used schuko once in the last 4 years and i wouldn’t want to pay €300-600 for something i rarely use, VW schuko branded EVSE is what i’m guessing around that price point?
If you have this problem in a new car, howe will it be when the car get old? Sorry for you, but shows an importent problem.
I totally agree ... about Scandic :-)
This might be the EV, since it was like 1 or 2 weeks ago and a very similar problem.
it must be Etron lol .. ES8 only available in Oslo as of now
whats your overall feeling of ES8 vs Tesla Model X ? do you still think this is the top class EV ? I have ordered one for myself and i live in Bergen
Infotainment, sofťware and efficiency compared to this NIO is diff dimension.

Bro , Bjorn took his Mom AND his Pregnant Wife out on a long long road trip. You better believe he bloody loves this 'thirsty' car. Mummy approved. Wifey Approved.
fun fact: the reason you dont smell the arcing on other j1772 EVSE's is because the trigger doubles as a circuit break.
@@moestrei Thank you!
It should NEVER arc and smell. The Type2 protocol energizes the connector only after locking and unlocks only after de-energizing.
@@Robcomesana Happy to help. There is so much misinformation but it is important to know whats going on when things go wrong. I actually build a Type 2 charger with the charge rate adjusted according to the solar input of my off grid system. So i had to learn a few things.
Is it possible that pulling the charging plug out whilst charging might have damaged the car resulting in the later problems ?
No
Just watch the whole thing.

Oh ha, is this good promo for NIO?
But the car cannot charge at CCS charger?
It doesn’t lock, so the charging session won’t start
Well it thinks it doesn't lock, but it does lock as he needed to pull the emergency release to get the cable out.
Car can talk to you. Got fabric loops and bicycle break wires to pop the hood and charge port.
Don't know you follow StarCraft 2, nice! Unless I heard it wrong
Probably a faulty microswitch in the charge port. They should think about an emergency override, so you can go back home
In case the charge port does in fact not lock properly an emergency override would be hilarious. I mean you just can't do it. Pull out AC with 11kW already is extremely dangerous. Now do it with 100kW, you will fry the complete thing.
Real world challenges when you test new cars. I am surprised this does not happen more often.
It does actually.
The price of electricity in China is 0.1-0.13 € per kilowatt hour.
I have talked about this many times before. Tesla uses PM + induction motors. E-tron uses two induction motors.
Shouldn't you turn off the charger on the wall before disconnecting??

It also struck me that a pro of EVs is that you can use electrical gadgets (eg camera, phones) around ‘electric pumps’ which is a no-no around ‘fossil fuel pumps’ ;)
Removing charge plug with small current is no issue. It works the same in Hyundai Kona -21, when you unlock the car, it drops the charging power to 500w. With 500w, chargeport is unlocked and you can just pull the plug. So I think it is intended to be like that.

I would not advise pulling the plug whilst charging. The break in the supply can cause a transient voltage spike which is not desirable on electronics. There will be some protection against this, none the less its not something you want to deliberately create.
If you can, test the Xpeng cars too. I'm curious to know how they perform in everyday use.
