For their latest film 'Elvis,' Catherine was tasked with recreating iconic moments that took the world by storm in the 1950s. From Elvis' black leather suit to the infamous pink and black hues that highlighted the King of Rock and Roll's sexuality and rebellion, Catherine breaks down the ins and outs of transforming Austin Butler into Elvis.

    This is the reason why Catherine Martin will win her 3rd Oscar in Costume Design. Her costumes are absolutely stunning. Her explanation of how and why the pants were structured in that way was fascinating. Moreover, it also shows why every aspect of filmmaking deserves to be recognized at the Oscar’s live telecast and not in the pre-show. These creators and designers and crafters of art are all quite magnificent. Brava!

      When I saw her name in the credits, I was absolutely mindblown by a lot of position she took for this movie. Not only she's just a costume designer, but she's also the production designer and the producer of the movie. Three biggest job in filmmaking! And she did it very well (of course she has help but still it's remarkable)

    I will admit, I thought this movie was going to be a flop or not that good because to me Austin naturally looks NOTHING like Elvis. BUT BOY was I wrong. I ended up going to see it in theaters because everyone was saying how good it was. I was honestly shocked at how AMAZING IT WAS!! AUSTIN played Elvis perfectly, no-one could have played it any better. It was so heartbreaking and I didn't know much about Elvis at all....I only knew he was super famous, an icon and he was married, had Lisa, was an icon and died of an Overdose. This was an incredible story that told you his side....and why he turned to drugs and just how he was worked to the BONE! :( It's so so sad. I love Britney Spears so much and I see so much of her in him and their stories are very similar to some degree. Totally taken advantage of, obviously neither of them were perfect but had very good hearts, generous, trusting souls. :( Anyways, I am now a true Elvis fan, I have spent my day off researching more about him because I am so interested in his life and story more then ever. I did not care or have an interest before. That truly speaks for itself about this movie!!!!

    • @VintageLPs
      @VintageLPs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What an interesting correlation you made between Elvis and Brittney. Jamie Spears is Col. Tom Parker reincarnated and both artists were the sole support of everyone around them. The difference is that Brittney was monitored closely to keep her performing whereas Elvis was pumped with drugs to keep him on stage and eventually no one could control his access to prescription drugs much like Michael Jackson.

      I love this comment. I felt the same way. Went in with zero expectations because my 10 year old loves elvis. But WOW. When an actor makes you forget they are trying to play someone else and are just being that person...it's great. What Luhrmann can interpret about Elvis? He could only see a superficial side and portrayed that. The movie is a high budget colourful parody. The costumes were very well done, taking into consideration the fragile and weak Butler’s bone structure, sloped shoulders and a long torso, although they couldn’t hide those Butlers physical issues anyway. Great job for a mediocre impersonator.

    Can someone help me with a follow-up (BTW, I LOVED the Baz Luhrmann Elvis movie): One of the minor but not unimportant details in this movie is a brief montage showing Elvis in Vegas wearing jump suits and raising his arms to show the cape he's also wearing. That image of Elvis became a trope, widely imitated for comic effect, and thankfully Baz resisted anything shtick that might have demeaned Elvis' larger story. How did this movie acknowledge that image without pandering to it? A brief montage of 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 poses of Elvis jump suits and capes in different colors and details that made me feel like I wanted to jump up in the theatre and strike that pose (not a pretty sight). ? It's movie magic when something that grabs you for maybe ten seconds took dozens of hours of research, fabrication, rehearsal, and a final shoot. I admire it so much that I'm hoping someone can answer my three questions. Are there other fabulous details in this Baz Luhrmann triumph? HUNDREDS!

    Something that’s often not mentioned is that B&K Enterprises in Indiana, who make replica Elvis costumes, made all the Jumpsuits for the film.

  • @ROCKINGMAN
    @ROCKINGMAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Interesting. So, Elvis had one suit for The Comeback which rode up when he moved and Butler had several made in different quality leather for comfort, manouverability and authentic look. Butler's suit is more well designed than Elvis' - it seems. But, I like when Elvis' suit rode up. I have been a fan for most of my life will see the film one day, but no where near as excited as others. I never think that anyone can wear Elvis style clothes without looking slightly idiotic. Only Elvis can wear jumpsuits, collars, gaudiness, bling, rings, sunglasses, caps and boots and look out of this world.

    Elvis was only blond during his childhood years. Like many people who start out blond, their hair gets darker as they age. Same happened to Elvis. By the time he was a late teenager, early twen, his natural hair color was chestnut brown. (per Charlie Hodge).

    It's funny that they cast an audience for the performances. The actual people who were there are being portrayed by actors. Many of them are still with us and can see themselves in a movie.
