  • Travel video about destination Abyssinia in Ethiopia.
Abyssinia is a mysterious country located in the mountains of Africa which today is known as Ethiopia, the cradle of early Christianity and a unique land of biblical stories and myths. Historic Aksum, in northern Ethiopia, was once the capital of a powerful kingdom. On the site of two previous religious buildings, its ancient cathedral was rebuilt in 1665. Thrones constructed of stone have witnessed the coronation of various monarchs whose Ethiopian Orthodox faith, from the fifth century, spread far and wide. From the Eastern Roman Empire, fleeing missionaries known as Monophysites introduced the ancient Christian faith which taught that Christ had only one divine nature. Eventually the concept of a division of faith came into being and Ethiopian Christianity developed independently and Aksum became a sacred city. Aksum is also referred to as ‘Ethiopian Rome’ and is the capital of the oldest Christian kingdom in the world, the largest outside the Roman Empire. In the north, the large water basins of May Shum are known as The Baths Of The Queen Of Saba. They date back to Aksumitic times and have been frequently renovated. A huge cistern supplies much of the population with water and on a hill above the town are the underground grave chambers of King Kaleb and Gebre Masqal. Although little remains of the former capital of the Aksumitic kingdom, Ethiopia's holiest site, it continues to be a place of mystique and legend. Dawit The Third, a son of Emperor Iyasu, had his palace built in the north of Fasil Ghebbi, protected by a nine hundred metre long wall. The large ballroom was known as Singer Hall because within it contests were held that featured wandering minstrels, and Dawit played the harp. Today, the lion cages are empty but Hailie Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia, possessed one as a symbol of his origin as having been from the Tribe of Judah. Without a doubt, Gondar will forever evoke a special kind of nostalgia and a rich sense of history.

There are a few errors in this report. Ethiopia (Aksum) has already accepted and made Christianity official state religion before those monks came to Aksum. They did help expanding it to other party of Ethiopia and help built schools and monastery. Stop misinforming people pls. We accepted Christianity at 320AD (with King Ezana). Rome made Christianity official state religion after we did.

14:45 Biet Urael (House Urael?)... The direction signs in the trenches of Lalibela are misspelled as Biet instead of Bete. Bete (House of) is the Ge'ez form. Biet leans towards Hebrew, and it is a different grammatical convention. You are in Abyssinia. It is a mistake inapplicable to the place, and corrosive of the meaning. The correct way is Bete Urael (House of Urael), Bete Giorgis, Bete Debre Sina etc. Not Biet Urael, Biet Giorigs etc. That is sloppy, who ever did it. Perhaps UNESCO unwittingly. It should be corrected.

And it derived from Utopia i.e paradise coz those days the outsiders, they saw how the rivers in all of east Africa and a rounding areas look liked a paradise and hosted several kingdoms or Empires. No disrespect, but the real ark of the covenant is under the Temple Mount. What was put in this building, was a copy, or replica, for the Priests who when with the Queen of Sheba; that they could use in their ritual and practice, as they taught Judaism in this place. Not even the Ten Commandments of Moses are in there. God had one place, where it was said: "is His house of worship". The whole Sheba insident, is religiously unfortunate, as for why she was made to leave. This replica was a token of the Kings love, and the Priest that were given; express the religion she gained, that changed the minds and hearts in that region.

A major point for the real ark of the covenant being in Ethiopia is the fact that the Ethiopian Jews lived in Ethiopia for centuries, separate from the rest of Hebrew society. How did they come there if they had not followed the real ark of the covenant there when Solomon gave it to his son Menelik? Doesn’t make sense, because Judaism was not a religion that sought out converts.
