  • This is the first POV (Point of view) video I have done, and although it's got way to much movement, I think many will like to see what I am looking at as we get off the dock and on the wire. If you missed it, there is an accompanying video that gives a geographical reference to where we are if you are not familiar with the area. link below

    Love watching this! Obviously, you found the sweet spot to handle the rotation. Now, to go back and re-watch the intricacies of setting her up again... My favorite part about this, though, is that you recognized the teachable moment when your mate was about to lean over the wire. A good mentor recognizes the value of others also helping educate novices. CUOTO.

      Back in the day when as a youngster I started in tunneling, it was the leading miner and his miners that taught me the trade. If by the second command you hadn't listened a clump on the head pushed it in.
      Like seamanship there's a lot to learn with cables and winches, railroad cars, high pressure air lines and power cables, so prevention of injury was upmost in our minds.
      Back in 2013, I started working in London UK and boy has the industry changed and pass tickets are the name of the game. I stuck it for 3 months and got fed up with the red tape. They even had a guy walking down the street in front of a 3 ton dumper, I remember seeing cars have the same when they were first invented. PROGRESS !!!!!!
      Boy I'm very glad I retired and know have time to watch others doing it on TH-cam. So thanks again for putting up video which I enjoyed while eating cheese and biscuits and sipping a port, the wet port not the left one, though theres a little left in the bottle. Pass the port.

    There was something interesting going on when your engineer was winching-in that heavy bridle pennant at the beginning of the video. The guy up on the barge who was slacking that line was able to control the weight of the pennant as well as counter the power of the winch with just a few turns around one post of the bitts. Non-nautical folk (and many power-boaters) would be amazed at how much force you can make with a little friction.

    • @rs2352

      The rule of thumb that I learned years ago is that, with three full turns on a drum, you generate enough friction to be able to break the line.
      As you say, the Tankerman cleaned off most of the 'stove piped' line, and easily managed slacking down the pennant wire with a couple of turns on the bit.

    On your tugs does the skipper always run the winch in the doghouse? as with our tugs, the winch is run from the wheelhouse and there is no doghouse on the ones we have here in Melbourne Australia. In this video, I would have liked to hear what you are all saying to each other as the process goes, and just some voice over in the quiet moments. Here we say anticlockwise. Nicely done and with teamwork things get done right.

    Tim, I'm curious why you couldn't just tie off the starboard rear quarter with the wire, pull back slightly and pull the barge off the port side of the dock, and then pivot the barge around into the channel. Or are you not allowed to pivot the barge on the dock? CUOTO

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Matt. Before I pushed oil, i worked for a company mainly moving aggregates and we did (almost) that often. We sailed barges off the dock on the wire, but never spun them 180 degrees. Now moving oil, everything is watched and reported and one bad day will end a career.
      The main reason for not doing it your way is that the barge most likely displaced about 5 or 6 thousand tons and the pivot point is almost midship. So as the bow would rotate off, the stern (with all of the weight and energy) would roll into the dock. CUOTO

    Nice demonstration Tim! That’s very familiar water to me. Spent a lot of time at Group LIS in New Haven.
    Don’t usually see barges on the wire in the channel like that there. Most make up on the wire outside.
    I liked your explanation of avoiding shock loads on the wire. My experience was all using Braided nylon Hawsers. They stretch like a bungee cord! Your pickup as the bow spun around was flawless. Fun to watch. #CUOTO

    Nice work. How long does it take the typical green horn out of one of the Maritime schools to be able to earn and gain the skill set to graduate from mate to Captain?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Ron. There really is no set time, and many get battlefield promotions weather deserved or not. It has much more to do with the company's need to fill the spot than the candidate's skill or experience. There are very skilled leaders that should have advanced years ago, and there are others that you might think should go back to training. But in general, the longer a mate spends on deck, the better mate he will be in the wheelhouse. And the long he spends as mate, the better captain he becomes. CUOTO

    Watched river barges for 25 years from my workplace along the upper Ohio river. Tows were always pushed. Seeing a barge at tow is scary. That wire looks like spider silk in relation to the barge. Maybe it’s the power of suggestion but I almost felt seasick! A bit too much movement. Otherwise, this is really interesting. Great narrative Tim. A good narrative always generates a lot of questions, but I will try and keep them to a dull roar...
    So...When you're in a harbor with less room, is there a ratio, or is it just by feel and experience that you know how much wire to have out in order to maneuver (as opposed to being in open water)?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching John. Amount of wire is usually driven by weather conditions. In the harbor, being relatively calm, we can keep the barge up close. But if there is a heave on, we need to pay out wire to add weight to make a cantonary to act as a shock absorber. CUOTO

    Wow. That’s a lot of work to get a big ole barge off dock….ya know we dont realize how much work goes into it….what I liked is how you try to minimize your reworks. I learned from this video that you want to think of all movements thru to the end before doing anything, sure saves you from hooking and unhooking a bunch of times I guess. Great video Tim. You have a great crew as well, I almost said stop out loud lol. when that crew member was going to walk over the winch line, then your engineer caught it in time. Tim, I'm an old retired diesel mechanic and no little of your trade. Seems to me a barge of that size should have its own propulsion. Is it much more economical to use a barge and hire tugs to transport it.?? Thanks mate.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Frank and welcome to the channel. The most common reason for the tug and barge configuration is to get around manning requirements. Because of the size of the barges, if powered, they would have to have a 17 man crew. CUOTO

    Did not realize you had a upper wheelhouse, sweet. I'm assuming it's for height which in the Midwest I've always seen tugs with a hydraulic wheelhouse that moves up and down

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Our barges might draw 22 feet when loaded and may rise up 20 feet plush the freeboard plus the deck equipment, so we need an upper house to see over everything.

  • @matthewprather7386
    @matthewprather7386 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great vid! At ~17:00 as you started coming ahead, removing twist, you could see the barge driving to port, as you said it would. But, by 18:00 you could see the barge had enough way that it was going pretty straight. It also occurs to me that you were pushing the barge backwards at that point so it may be more prone to not going straight compared to if it was moving forward through the water?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Matthew. You would think so, but it usually doesn't work that way. If we pushed it forward we wouldn't be connected to the bridal on the bow of the barge. This would require us to breakdown from push gear and go up to to now of the barge and remake the tow. The time and forces involved with that usually get the barge all out if shape. CUOTO

    Yes, shock load is dangerous. I deal with it all the time in my line of work. Shock load is a HUGE amount of energy that is released (and/or absorbed) in a very short period of time.... fractions of a second. Most people dont realize how dangerous shock load can be because it happens so quickly. I tell people "sure, that huge shock load was only "there" for a tenth of a second BUT, IT WAS THERE" . It doesnt matter how long the load was there, IT WAS THERE. Great video, by a skilled Captain. Thanks, Tim.
