  • In this video, we are inbound to Port Jefferson Harbor on Long Island NY. It was a nice day, and being on the back watch, I was sleeping. But my Mate took us in and did a textbook perfect job. He also shares with you his entire thought prosses.

    Dan, you demonstrated the single most important part of handling a vessel, something many pleasure boat operators never learn.: Take your time and let things work, it is much safer and usually easier if you do.
    I have seen professional Captains that could use learning that lesson.

    Tim, there is a certain sense you get when you are around a maritime academy graduate. Nothing obvious or overstated, but it is present. A feeling that this person knows more than they say, listens to everything said, and possesses the confidence to perform at a high level with a minimum of direction. That four years of maritime education and the associated license it provides is just what’s on the surface of these young people. Another stratus of character, mental toughness, persistence and leadership are instilled at the academies in preparation for a career at sea. This allows guys like Dan to take your instruction and knowledge and build on it way beyond what is expected. Every moment you invest in him will be repaid richly. Some day, Dan will think of his “Portuguese Captain” and it will be you!

      You can see he's nervous... this is a real "make or break" moment. This isn't just showing you the skipper he is capable of doing what is needed... he's showing the world! Here it is a year later and he's still showing it, even though he has definitely moved on in his career.
      Very nicely done, captain and hand both.

Better be careful, Dan might just start his own channel, he makes a good commentator. Third, as a retired USAF MSGT I can tell you that the performance of your subordinates reflects on your training of them. Job well done Tim!!! Third: Watching Dan enter Port Jeff reminds me of nights we've spent anchored under those very same smoke stacks. Forth: I consider watching your channel a form of CEU's (Continuing Education Units), helping me improve my own knowledge of commercial boat handling. Thank you. Welcome to my home port of Port Jefferson Harbor!!! I have lived here for over fifty years and know it waters well. My home is on the bluff on the western side (right side i video) of the harbor. Current (Tide) within the harbor peaks around a couple of knots of speed on the flood and ebbing tides, so not really a factor for us recreational boaters. Wind is another story and can blow hard coming over the bluffs. There is very little boat traffic in the winter months. just the ferry and oil and sand/gravel commercial operations. It is a narrow channel (I did spot the range markers and its lights in the video), which looks like a highway of boat traffic, especially on holidays like the 4th of July and Labor Day. Amazing that there are no apparent collisions with that mix of recreational and commercial traffic in the harbor. I do hear the ferry whistle blast a warning once in a while to those that don't follow the rules of the road. There is good coexistence of recreational and commercial boating in the harbor. The one complaint I would have is that with some frequency, oil barges are anchored a couple of hundred yards off my beach, sometimes for several days. Not comforting to have that much oil so close. Nice video. I enjoyed seeing the harbor from another perspective.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching Chaz. Wow. What a great place to live! Most of the guys that anchor up (commercial) off the beach only do so to catch the lee of the wind blowing off the shore making this less of a concern if anything where to go wrong. If the wind is blowing out if of the North, we usually go to newhaven and do the opposite thing for the same reason. #CUOTO

    • @view05nys
      @view05nys 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimBatSea Hi .... yes, very good protection from the westerly wind with the bluff's protection. We would use it when we came back from fishing trips in our small boat. Instead of a straight line from the harbor entrance to the house, we would turn to starboard over to the bluff and follow it near shore to the house. It is as you know and as you stated, the barge anchorage is open to the north through north-east. They of course can be "nasty" winds. I can see using the north of us Connecticut shore and its hills for shelter

    Thanks for the video. I had been talking to a friend just 2days ago about fishing and lobstering out of Port Jefferson when I was a teenager. We used to catch stripped bass just outside the floating markers at the LILCO warm water outlet not far from the docks you landed at. I remember the giant tanker that broke in half in the late 1960's bow and stern sank to the bottom, leaving the cracked open portion sticking up. It was quite a scene to see into the interior tank sections of the hull

    Hello Capt. TimB. I took the information you gave me about what years you attended Proctor. I did a little sleuthing and used the Internet to view the 1985 Senior Year Book, and there behold was your dapper senior class picture, mustache and all. I didn't grow my mustache
    until my freshman year at UVM. I also retrieved some other facts while perusing the yearbook,
    namely what the "B" stands for as well as the nickname. I'll keep this info a mystery. I liked
    the episode when Dan pushed the loaded barge up into Port Jefferson. He did a great job
    "slow and steady" gets the job done avoiding headlines. He is a cautious and deliberate
    mariner. He has learned well and applies his skill accordingly. I would think a loaded
    barge is easier to maneuver as opposed to an empty barge, probably because an empty
    barge would be more vulnerable to tide, wind and currents making it trickier to handle. A
    loaded barge is sluggish, but the weight can add forward momentum. This was an interesting
    episode. The Elk River has a great crew. Take care.

    Beautifully done both in teaching and learning. I know the pride of having a student learn so well. I learned sailing myself from racing . Then I taught small boat sailing at summer camps and after the campers learned the basics we started to race - them against me. Eventually they would beat me which means they learned a lot. I think by teaching we all learn some more ourselves. Great job, both of your.

    Thanks for that and nicely done.
    Verbalizing is a great tool for both student and instructor when learning to operate any peace of equipment. I was taught it on my Advanced Car Driving Course by my instructor a police driving instructor. Man it was amazing what he was noticing and commenting on, way beyond just driving. Any way I passed and later on one before my daughters driving age I put then into by just verbalizing my actions while out for a drive. The picked it up very quickly and had just two driving lessons more to learn how to pass than drive. They both passed the younger one even verbalized during her test, the examiner commented on this as his first and he felt very at ease as he knew what she was seeing.
    I have even used while training junior engineers while walking a construction site.
    Well done and stay safe.

    I've watched 3 of your videos so far and subscribed! My new binge watching/notification waiting channel! I've watched all the videos on an air traffic control channel (VASAviation) and a land based tow truck/rotator truck channel (Ron Pratt). All very educational, absolutely nothing I knew about before and far afield from my IT/health care job! I find it fascinating and strangely relaxing to observe people who are extremely skilled and composed while doing a potentially dangerous and complex job involving physics, mechanical equipment and nature. Counterbalances some of the chaos going on in 2020, perhaps. Ron Pratt uses a head mounted camera most of the time, you might watch to see how it works for viewers (I saw another comment where you discussed the possibility of using it yourself). A lovely demonstration of handling a loaded barge. When you are being trained to sit the advanced drivers test in the UK you are taught to talk what you are and intend to do. Its not only for the instructor to know your intentions it is a mental thought process that once you speak it it reconfirms your thought process. Doing it in a car is easy as no one will hear you but with a video running over your shoulder is totally different. Should we blame Tim for it all... I think you Jeff has a inbuilt understanding of the process. He can also describe what he is doing and intends. Great work. Thinking and doing is one skill, talking to others while doing it is another. Time, speed, momentum, energy input, is all a equation that needs constant consideration and control. You showed you have all 4 parts of the equation in your head. Good work Jeff. Now relax and have a Tea or Coffee or soft drink.. and do the paper work!! Amacf

    I sailed Port Jeff harbor on a friends sailboat for many years, and always worried about meeting the ferry in the channel with a recreational boat, let alone with a wide commercial ship. I stumbled on to your page by accident and have learned a tremendous amount. I find myself asking during the video, where is the wind coming from, what is the tide doing? Danny did a great job telling us what he is thinking, and how he is letting the tide and wind work for him, I need to develop that patience as a recreational boater when docking.
