  • The New England Patriots continue to seek success post Tom Brady era and aim to do so this year. Owner Robert Kraft says that while he loves the team, he 'wants Super Bowl' No. 7. Colin Cowherd dives into Bill Belichick's record without Brady, then explains why he is inching closer to the hot seat. Travis Kelce discusses being underpaid with Vanity Fair, saying that 'I love winning. I love the situation I'm in.' This comes after managers and agents share how underpaid the TE is. Colin reacts to Kelce's comments.

You need to take a closer look at the ‘08 season. While the patriots were good with Cassel, they were not great. 4 of their 5 losses were to teams that did make the playoffs including the eventual super bowl champion Steelers who beat them in NE. They also lost to the dolphins and jets at home. Brady doesn’t lose those games.

Well, it was the greatest players Bill ever assembled (virtually the 07 squad minus Brady), and a QB in Matt Cassel that was decent enough to take the Chiefs to their first playoff in 7 years in his only other un injured season… Honestly it’s kind of the perfect example of what Brady meant to the Patriots. They went from the highest scoring team in history (only ever beat by the 2012 Broncos), and the only team to ever be 18-0 in one season (Dolphins did their run in just 17 games), to the 8th highest scoring team, and missing the playoffs 🤷‍♂️

One thing that is often overlooked in considering Belichick's legacy is that for more than a decade he coached against horrible teams in the AFC East. Let's keep it real, Tom Brady was the greatest QB of all time. These high calibre QBs are rare and carry franchises. Once you lose your starting QB of 19 years, you can't just expect to keep a winning team. It's not the 1990s or 2000s anymore, either. Even Belichick's defenses (which were Top 3 in every major defensive statistic last year) can't make up for such a huge loss. It is a QB centred league. And Mac Jones ain't it. New England is gonna go through the same motions as every team who is in need of a franchise QB. Btw, Belichick is the coach who favors old tough defense and a power run game. Whereas Andy Reid is an offensive guru who had Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick and Alex Smith before he had Mahomes. The QBs who played under Bill as a head coach were Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe. Times have changed. Just accept it. You got 6 SBs out of it. I am saying that as a Packers fan cause we had 30 years of great HoF QBs play and we only got 2 SBs out of it. Very dark times are awaiting. Just cherish your memories, Pats! I feel the same except I'm a life long Broncos fan. Every time I watch a game Reid is coaching there's at least one offensive play that A)I've never seen before and B) is such an intelligent and well timed football innovation. My poor Broncos might extend their losing streak against KC for the next several years because of the genius of Reid and skill from Mahomes and it really hurts to admit it.

    Issue with the coach-QB dilemma:
Colin often likens the power of quarterbacks to the invention of the internet or nuclear physics, i.e. that while other facets of the game, the physicality, the running game, etc. are old fundamentals that you teach to middle school kids, these are more like “maintenance things” in today’s league, like “constant variables” if you will, and the quarterback is the modern technology - the separating factor - that decides success. It makes sense, as the quarterback is the distributor of the football and the strategic field commander of the team. Physicality, speed and athleticism of the rest of the team is good, but all of that is transcended by a quarterback who can slot the ball through a tight seam and intellectually dissect any defense. “Good coverage” back then meant not getting completely burnt by a 5-yard margin; now, a DB can stick with a receiver perfectly, yet the body angle of the receiver is considered “open” for a modern quarterback, and I ffense trumps defense nowadays. And such is modernity - transformation cooking transaction as we tread on through time. I enjoy his stoic honesty - his willingness to admit that the quarterback position is the final frontier, our travel through space, the advent of A.I., the paradigm that will put to bed inefficient old sentiments - and he himself has attributed this to his west-coast “get with the times” culture - as opposed to staying sentimental and pretending that “running the ball and playing defense” - the good ol’ fashion way - will seal your success; that’s the Steelers, and they haven’t been hot lately.
    But he contradicts himself.
He considers the quarterback transcendent, yet he still makes attributions to other parts of the team - as if the quarterback ISN’T transcendent.
There’s an idea in philosophy called inefficient explanation. That is, if your original clause is that X perfectly explains Z, then in the event of XY=Z, there’s no reason to assume that Y had any part in producing Z. The most likely occurrence would be that the presence of X is what led to Z, and Y so far is considered incidental, or tag-along.
This is scary to Patriots fans who want to embellish and enshrine Belichick as equally attributable in the Patriots’ dynasty after Brady had left, because basically what that’s banking on is the coincidence of two legends at once. Since Brady is a legend, and he left the Patriots in dust of mediocrity while going on to win a Super Bowl in one season’s difference, there’s nothing that Belichick can concretely claim as evidence of his own dominance as a coach, and evermore frightening is the possibility that he was the redundant Y in that X(Y)=Z equation.

Bill as a HC and defensive mind is a top coach even without brady. His schemes, knowledge, coaching, are all top tier.
Bill as an overall HC and GM is very lacking in many areas without brady. He is hot garbage at evaluating talent and has been for a very long time.
So the question "is he the goat coach without brady" imo no he wouldnt be. And no its not just that every coach needs a great player.
Its that brady specifically mask the major problems bill has (getting players, not adapting coaching and playstyle overtime, etc)
I beleive coaches from the past in this salary cap era with a qb that was healthy for 20 years, took less money, was a great leader, and a top qb every year are better than bill overall.
