    • @xyzsame4081
      @xyzsame4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Geordi started on the correct path (and deserves credit - and he made that clear in the beginning of exploring the idea - " _I_ am not giving up now I have come close ...." ), but Data immediately found several of the right questions to narrow down the possibilities. (and Geordi tought of others). Like always- if 2 or more capable people cooperate and support each other, they are better as _team_ than each of them could be - or faster. So Data was not stroking his (non existing) ego, it was a WE effort and WE success.
      The forest is more than the sum of its trees
      .... even if one or a few impressive trees may stand out and bring higher value for the eco system - think roots system, mining minerals, bringing up ground water, securing the soil, being the source of seeds to replant, providing shade, wind shelter, and food). That tree on its own would be weaker w/o the smaller trees bushes and other plants and life forms above and under ground.

    • @xyzsame4081
      @xyzsame4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Having a brilliant idea / original hypothesis is useless if you cannot pursue it or verfiy it. And Data was a major part of the process that Geordi had started. hence the use of the word: WE

    • @xyzsame4081
      @xyzsame4081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edit: Data used "we" right from the beginning before they had explored it in detail. However: Geordi came to him to work with the idea, and Data was indeed useful in the process and came up immediately with the proper questions to narrow down possibilities. And both officers knew Data was a major part of the effort (was going to be a major part of the effort).
      So the use of WE was not arrogant, if reflected the correct assessment of how much the crew relied on Data for assessments in such situations.

    2.3 parsecs = 7.59 light years. In order for them to take 3 weeks, they'd have to be cruising along at Warp 4.5, roughly.

    • @whompronnie
      @whompronnie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking the same. That seems like a reasonable cruising speed, though I'd like if they expanded more on why they don't just travel at Warp 9 most of the time. They'd get a lot more exploring done.
      Obviously there are energy issues to consider (as while you go exponentially faster, you also use exponentially more energy, causing issue if you're traveling out of range of starbases) or even increased maintenance considerations, again, not desirable outside the range of a starbase [Edit: Or even conserving energy reserves for any number of humanitarian or self-defense situations.]
      I know in some sectors there are speed limits for various political or 'environmental' reasons, so I wonder how often they pass through those
      I also wonder if they have a secondary task of passively charting systems, which might be more difficult at higher warps
      Just... some ramblings

      @deanwinchester7179 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whompronnie I don't remember if it was before or after this episode but it was eventually discovered warp travel damages space so most non-emergency/urgent travel was speed limited.

    • @richardkoroias2082
      @richardkoroias2082 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@whompronnie well it was stated in another episode that travelling at high warp causes damage to the vessel itself for long periods of time and builds up a type of radiation that can endanger the crew. plus in a later episode they found that the warp energy actually destroyed space by leaving a type of pollution behind. and there was also the energy consumption. warp 8+ was an exponential class higher of energy usage (comparable to the damage from various categories of hurricanes). and the dilithium crystals can only last so long as well before needing replacement at a starbase.

    3 weeks to go 2.3 parsecs? Seems pretty slow. 2.3 parsecs = 7.5 ly in 3 weeks is (if my calculations are correct) is 132 x C or between warp 4 and 4.5.

      The Enterprise is on a mapping mission, so they are probably not heading directly to the alien's home planet.

    • @zairman
      @zairman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Picard said it wasn't to interfere with their current mission. So they weren't in any hurry to get there.

      @aguyhere7945 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Since they were charting the area they were probably making stops along the way to do things like deploy communication arrays, pick up long range probes and set up monitoring equipment on planets that might be of some interest for follow up missions to take a look at.

    • @AlexanderRM1000
      @AlexanderRM1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh- I was also thinking that seemed quite slow, funny how 132xC is actually absurdly fast but, despite not actually talking about distance much, Star Trek has gotten me to think of that as slow. I guess Warp factor being super-linear makes sense, all the times when they go from one star system to another mid-crisis are usually at higher warps.
