Starting my iRacing journey... is rookies this hard for you guys?!

  • Get in my head as I start my iRacing career, albeit in a very disappointing fashion. I finally have the sim in working order (go check out my latest videos for the setup process), but my racing skills aren't quite there yet.
How about you guys? What has your experience been with iRacing, and progressing through the levels?

The key to get out of Rookie and actually improve is consistency. You have to feel confortable with the car and the track before jump into a race. A good load cell pedals also make a huge improvement. And always watch your replays on different camera angles. That makes you identify you own mistakes which can be focused on for corrections. It's a never end learning experience. Good luck

This is very helpful to watch. I’ve been racing (autocross) real cars for many years, and your description about judging corner entry is spot on. Very tricky to get it right. You can tell when the car understeers because the FFB wheel gets light in your hands, but it’s tough to judge when the rear is stepping out. (The fun part of driving a real car).
I’m NOT getting a motion rig. lol!

funny thing is asseto corsa sends that infomation through the wheel.. its gives out forces you would normally feel with yer but. you can feel the back end stepping out through the wheel and catch it even though they may not be realistic in terms of what you would feel through the wheel irl.. so far its my favourite ffb

The trick to feeling oversteer unfortunately is to have a higher torque wheel. The wheel needs to have the power to push back against your hands to straighten the car out. I just upgraded to 6nm and didn't even know this was a thing till I did

I recently just started back into sim racing after about 6 years and started with the Vee. That thing is so finicky and I found out that even when you think you should be in 2nd gear, just stay in 3rd. It will save you so many spins. I did a couple races where I was actually racing some people and it always ended up with me getting wrecked out by either them not giving room or me getting a bit too eager into braking zones. Once I essentially stopped racing people I got out of rookie in a couple of races no problem. Also congrats on Class D!

Bring the G9 closer to you. Place this between the base and the steering wheel. I have a distance of 62cm between my eye and the G9. For me it greatly improved the immersion. The low height of the screen then no longer plays a role. I can also recommend using a HeadTracker. I don't play without it anymore.

Don't overtake on the outside unless it's a very long radius corner. The bit where you were wiped out he/she was always going to create a narrowing gap until you hit or go off track.
With the speed differential you have against some of these, hang back then close up just before the corner to a good length straight, get a good, fast exit and overtake before you even get to the next corner.

I'm in my second season of iracing now and I've learned it's not rookies so much as it is lower splits where carnage happens, that's not to say it doesn't happen at higher splits but it's less common. I'm sure as you get more experience in the sim and raise your irating you'll have a better time. As for needing to be smooth in the vee, well I've never tried it, as tin tops are my thing but I reckon you need to be smooth in any race car if you want to go fast. This seems an old thread. My simple observation, which you should have corrected in the interval time, is that you are not using any trail braking. THAT is what turns your front end; gas pushes you straight. So if you want understeer (or "push") use the throttle; if you want oversteer (or "loose") use the brake.

For me, the best is to drive on the edge in qualifying, but in race I drive a little bit under it. So I often can get a top 10 result, because others are over the edge :)

Thats the trick, enjiy stop putting pressure on yoyrself its to learn the tracks, learn how to be careful and be pateint rookie is not about winning or taking chances. Consitency is key but really its consitency with clean racing. Right now you should just be learning the trscks and having clean races. Thats it
Also remrmber tires being cold and hot matter even down to the track temps matter! So you will learn the limits of said car and wheels. Its realistic for a reason accounting for all of this stuff.

Never start in the pits, never start at the back. Although many experienced (and not so), iRacers will advise these two strategies to avoid the Rookie mayhem that sometimes happens (especially lap one, turn one), but honestly, it’s bad advice. You will never learn how to read trouble, or impending trouble ahead, if you spent your entire time in Rookies never being in the thick of it. That is why the ‘start from the pits’ advice will often still be seen/heard in the lower splits of D, C, B & A Series and it’s always advocated by the folks who complain that everyone else around them are lunatics and crazy wreckers.
Do yourself a major solid and get stuck in right from the start and ensure you are learning race craft right from the get go.
