  • Have you ever been in a situation in which you were really upset about something, but you had up until a certain point kept the emotions under control until you have a conversation with someone and they start asking you how you’re doing and as soon as you verbally admit that you’re having a tough time, all of the emotions overflow to the surface and you begin to cry.
    Now, I’ve never experienced that myself, because I don’t cry, but the reason that that loss of control happens is because when you verbalize those thoughts, they become incarnate in a way that gives them more consequence and they, in turn, become way more difficult to control.
    Thoughts that only ever remain thoughts have limits but when we embody those thoughts with words or actions, they dramatically grow in strength and significance.
    This is absolutely true of our spirituality. Our spiritual or religious practices can be of a kind that are limited to internal thoughts or immaterial reality such as praying in your head or holding your religiosity as tightly guarded secret.
    But if you pray out loud or participate more actively and physically in community worship, you’ll find that your religion will take on a new and more vibrant role in your life.
    That’s why Catholics are encouraged to express the things we believe with physical and verbal significance.
    When we celebrate Sunday liturgy, we are singing, and responding with our physical bodies. We stand together, we kneel together, and we respond together as though we are a single organism expressing an otherwise unseen spiritual reality.
    That’s why Catholicism is a sacramental spirituality. The sacraments like baptism and communion are physical signs of spiritual realities. When we participate in them, our spirituality overflows into our physical lives and affects us in ways it wouldn’t if we avoided such practices.
    And God agrees. That’s why he became man. Why his word became flesh in the person of Jesus. God’s immaterial being became material so that we could encounter the unseen spiritual reality of his existence.

    I stopped going to church around 3 years ago. It just didn't resonate with me at the time. A few addictions later, I went this past Sunday. It was completely random.
    Doing the actions and the sacraments, saying the Apostle's Creed (Which you never forget) overwhelmed me. I could feel how tired and worn out this world made me feel. I had taken for granted the spiritual growth I had developed throughout my life and didn't realize the misery and stagnation I have been in until I had went to Church.
    I still adhere to having a critical thinking mind, but never question it because the peace I felt last Sunday was....I'm still pondering why. I don't deserve it at all.

      God is going to be hard on the willfully ignorant who attack HIS Church, HIS mother, and HIS body. Please educate yourself as you are clearly exceedingly ignorant. That goes for both of you "authorities." By the way, Jesus gave you ZERO authority. He gave all of that to Peter and Peter's Church, i.e. the CATHOLIC Church.

    Thank you Brian for the video, reminded me so much of Fulton Sheen's "These Are the Sacraments" (www.ewtn.com/library/DOCTRINE/SACRAMEN.TXT)
    My heart is physically aching whenever our separated brothers and sisters spew thoughtless accusations because more often than not, they are not interested in hearing our explanations. A non-Catholic close friend of mine recently sent me an article about how we are idolaters and that we worship Mary. I told her no and explained what we believe. She insisted that it was not the case because her pastors said so. I challenged her to find any official Church documents saying so since all our the Church's teachings are open for scrutiny. I also told her that if we do worship Mary, why would we deny it, right? If it is true that we believe her to be a "god" then, it would be illogical for us to say she's not. Sadly, she never talked to me since then. :(
    I pray for the day when all of us are worshiping as one because it was how Jesus intended it to be.

    Both my parents died when I was a teen. I was living alone at 16. At 17 I had an encounter with Christ. At 19 I was baptised, confirmed and received my first holy communion as I entered the Catholic Church. I have had cancer and two of my kids have had cancer. We have all recovered. We are a very happy family and I will celebrate 25 years of marriage to my cradle Catholic husband in June 2021. I put this all down to the Mass. I try to go daily. God is good. And Truth. And Beauty. But most of all, Love.

    Brian, I so appreciate your channel! Normally I find your analogies relevant and thought-provoking, but am struggling a bit with the opening here. In my experience, honestly acknowledging and vocalizing difficult emotions with a trusted confidant is an important step toward processing and releasing them so that they do not have a hold on you. I agree with the commenter who pointed out that society does men a great disservice by many falsehoods about what it means to be strong (conflating manliness with emotional suppression and unhealthy coping by keeping painful thoughts bottled up).

    The character in this video must know know about the paganism of the Catholic Church. For instance, at about the 2-minute mark of the video is an image of a man with a circle around his head. That circle is called a nimbus. Concerning the nimbus, The New Catholic Encyclopedia acknowledges: “The most common attribute, applied to all saints, is the nimbus (cloud), a luminous defined shape surrounding the head of the saint. Its origins are pre-Christian, and examples are found in Hellenistic art of pagan inspiration; the halo was used, as evidenced in mosaics and coins, for demigods and divinities such as Neptune, Jupiter, Bacchus, and in particular Apollo (god of the sun).”-(1967), Vol. XII, p. 963.
    The New Encyclopædia Britannica adds: “In Hellenistic and Roman art the sun-god Helios and Roman emperors often appear with a crown of rays. Because of its pagan origin, the form was avoided in Early Christian art, but a simple circular nimbus was adopted by Christian emperors for their official portraits. From the middle of the 4th century, Christ was also shown with this imperial attribute . . . it was not until the 6th century that the halo became customary for the Virgin Mary and other saints.”-(1976), Micropædia, Vol. IV, p. 864.
    Is it proper to mix Christianity with pagan symbolism? I would say no.

    • @levisando
      @levisando 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the downside of using an existing artistic element style to mean a similar thing, compared to how it's already being used? Why is that a bad thing?

    • @cbooth151
      @cbooth151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@levisando "Is it proper to mix Christianity with pagan symbolism?" Uh, NO! 2 Cor. 6:14-18 says: "Do not be yoked with those who are different, with unbelievers. For what partnership do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? What accord has Christ with Beliar? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said: "I will live with them and move among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people." So, borrowing paganism from the Greeks further contaminates the Church, which is already corrupt.
      Would you like another aspect of Catholic paganism?

    • @levisando
      @levisando 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbooth151 I guess my issue with your example of the nimbus/halo/whatever is that just because it was used in pagan art doesn't mean that when Catholic artists use it, it's pagan. If it did, we'd have much bigger issues.

    • @cbooth151
      @cbooth151 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@levisando You don't find Catholics' adopting pagan symbolism disturbing? Why am I not surprised? I guess you are just used to the Catholic Church's sleeping with pagans. Well, here's another item that further contaminates the apostate Catholic Church.
      I suppose you are aware that the Church believes the trinity teaching, right? I also suppose that you are aware of some of the trinitarian terms such as "nature," "essence," and "substance." Well, did you know that such terms can be found nowhere in the Bible? So, where did they come from? The Catechism of the Catholic Church admits that those terms were borrowed from pagan Greek philosophy. As it says: "In order to articulate the dogma of the Trinity, the Church had to develop her own terminology with the help of certain notions of philosophical origin: "substance" (rendered also at times by "essence" or "nature"), "person" or "hypostasis", "relation" and so on."
      As the Catechism implies, the Catholic Church couldn't find Biblical terms to describe the trinity, so, it turned to pagan Greek philosophy. Face it, the Catholic Church is steeped in paganism. Unfortunately, that doesn't bother you, does it?

    • @levisando
      @levisando 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbooth151 To broaden my earlier comments, I don't see the issue with using an artistic element or theoretical concept or holiday tradition, etc., just because it's something used by "pagans" or any other non-Christian group.
      As for your example of the Trinity, it's understandable that, considering that the Bible isn't a library of the entirety of human knowledge, philosophy, and language, that people would need to use elements from their own culture to explain their thoughts. What about that is bad?

    Great video, except the "macho" attitude toward crying was a bit unnecessary. I think it is harmful when men jokingly or otherwise act tough and refuse to show "weakness". Our Lord cried, and He created us this way, so that is enough for me. It doesnt take much to see that in Christianity, true strength is in weakness (power of God on the cross) and true wealth is found in poverty. I think that actually make a great video topic for you in the future! Anyway, great work and God bless!

      @BrianHoldsworth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks. We pray to Mary and the saints because the Bible tells us to intercede for each other and that when we do pray for each other it can have significant effect. So it would stand to reason that those who have died and now live in unity with God in Heaven, as members of the body of Christ, can still intercede for us and do so in even more powerful ways.
      Some verses:
      Genesis 20:7, Job 42:7-9, Romans 15:30-32, 1 John 5:16, James 5:16
      As we know, faithful and righteous followers of God go before us in death, but they are not dead, they are alive (Mark 12:27). Jesus did not tell us to pray to saints in Heaven, but he did not forbid either and when Moses and Elijah appeared to him, he spoke with them (which is what the word pray means). So, by his example, there's nothing wrong with praying to those who have died and live in communion with God. The Bible tells us that we are united to each other as members of Christ's body and in that mystical communion, when we pray to and with each other, we are praying with and to God. There's no dichotomy that says it must be one or the other. When we intercede for each other, we are acting as members of his body. For example, if you want to make an appeal to a king, you could go to a magistrate or local governor who represents and works in unity with the king. By going to the magistrate, you are going to the king. You're not going to the magistrate instead of the king.
      You probably want to object to that by saying, why not go directly tot he king if you can. You can go to the king directly and there's nothing wrong with that, but as the Bible shows us, we are also encouraged to interceded for each other because that strengthens the body of believers in love and concern for one another.
      Lastly, we know that God does honor prayers received by the saints in heaven and offered to him because it's depicted in St. John's vision of Heaven. See Revelation 5:8 and Revelation 8:3-4.
