The only thing about this video that I didn’t like, was that Cam didn’t show the parts when Jake Weddle was talking about how they made out the solitary confinement video to be some sort of paradise with a hot tub, ice cream machine, ps5, VR etc. Also the part where MrBeast made him literally run a MARATHON on the treadmill as part of the challenge. Other than that I think you did an amazing job summing this up!👍👍 (This is not meant to be hate I just hoist it was a little weird you didn’t mention that)
I think it's the tone of his philanthropy videos, and the way he talks to the people he's helping that really makes me personally uncomfortable. There's a clip of him being so insanely tone death with one of the people he's helping, and it nearly killed me. I really believe that he doesn't care and is using it for his image.

If you’re gonna destroy someone’s car for a video you’ll make tons of money on, at least buy the guy a brand new car. I think the overall message of all of this to come out about the business side, not the other allegations, is that Mr Beast is 1) making sick amounts of money off people’s suffering, like he’s some sort of savior, when it’s all ultimately making him wayyy MORE money (which we already knew since it’s his business model) and 2) he doesn’t pay all the people who are actually providing him with the entertainment and emotional core of his content with the anywhere near the value they’re providing him. (But he has a special crew of best buds who presumably do get more, and get treated wayyy better.) I mean, sure, a business has to make a profit, but does it need to be that out of proportion? Such that a dude whose car he destroyed FOR CONTENT doesn’t get a new car (plus covered of the taxes and fees) that the company can definitely afford? As for his philanthropy: he centers himself as the savior. Sure, the money has to come from somewhere, but the way he goes about it is clearly purely for his TH-cam career. Why does he need to have those creepy thumbnails, and why lie about giving blind people their sight back? He paid for people with terrible eyesight to have the surgery that they couldn’t afford, but he didn’t heal the blind. It feels exploitative. Perhaps pay for the philanthropy with the stunt videos. There are many different ways to do philanthropy. The main distaste I have has been the same as always. I’ve never been in his target demographic or been interested in his videos, but he’s hard to not at least be aware of if you use TH-cam, and I have always been put off by his “Lord Bountiful” act. Truly generous and kind people don’t make a huuuge profit off their charity and the people they help.
I think you kinda missed a point with the solitary vid. They said he was gonna get 300k for it. I dont think anyone would do it for £10, but the monetary incentive was kinda like a bribe. We can all say well i just wouldnt have done it but if it was offered and you thought ud atleast be safe and instantly get significantly better financially (which he didnt even get paid the full amount), i feel like actually a lot of people would do it. I mean it is a life changing amount of money. And who knows what his finances were like / his family situation was.
cam ill be honest, I think criticising Jake for getting involved in the isolation video is a bit silly considering how he was essentially peer pressured into agreeing to it, particularly moreso as he needed the money, and i don't want to be rude, but this video as a whole felt like you were interjecting yourself a bit too much, 'I would never have taken that video deal' comes across as a bit insensitive - A fan since around 5 or 6 years ago

@@MikeyWins11 wasnt just pressured by money (also wasnt just 'money', it was LIFE changing money) but also peer pressure, there would have been a sense of feeling forced to finish or else disappoint his peers and employers, we've already seen how short of a fuse the employers have, also quiting after a huge setup has been created may feel awkward to let down all those who worked hard on it
yeah, we also don’t know if there was a contract or any sort of formal agreement that gave him an out (y’know, a safe word essentially)… like in research trials with human subjects, they have to be able to withdraw consent. and if there wasn’t any such provision then clearly not all parts of the video were well thought through.
The people who’ve been posted at the top of the TH-cam pyramid have been falling off left, right and center. As much as I hate the things they’ve done and the people they’ve hurt along the way, I’m glad to see the pyramid finally starting to crumble and people feeling safe to tell their stories. Hopefully some of the creators deserving of more views and subscribers can climb up now and show people how to be at the top and still be a good person.

Your commentary on things that are quasi-legal such as the drama surrounding Baby Reindeer and the Mr Beast controversy is very thoughtful and well-researched. Yes, you should play to your strengths and analyse situations like this because you have a very approachable way of cutting straight to the heart of the issues whilst remaining as impartial as is appropriate given the information being analysed.
Ok so sociopath isn't something that's used now and would be classed as 'Antisocial personality disorder'. As someone who has it its so easy to spot other people who also show the traits. MrBeast has always shown the traits, he gets gets enjoyment from putting people through the challenges and doesn't have any empathy for the other people actually in them, they are just a chess piece in his game. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to aim and end up in places of power like government, television, ceos ect and he strives for the top of youtube. He uses money and power to manipulate people which will be why he gets people who work for him or know him to do the videos because people who don't know him or someone involved will not take the treatment. People with aspd are also amazing at putting up a front of being a good person who cares for others and only wants the best (politicians do it all the time). Cult leaders and serial killers are also known for having aspd and its known that they have the facade of being a charismatic and kind person. The people close to him will also either be so manipulated into loyalty or will be bad people too because like calls to like, he will keep his personal circle small but they will all know the truth. It takes so much therapy and working on yourself to deal with and handle aspd, it's taken me 5years and I still struggle. Everyday it is a conscious decision to be a better person but many don't do it because why be a good person when you can manipulate and end up at the top right? He 100% does not care about the drama or how it has affected anybody involved, he only cares about his money and his vision. He will put out a lawyer written statement and keep going on with his life as it is.
I like how you've covered the story, however I think you have been unfair and rather insensitive on some points. To say you wouldn't have done the solitary confinement video almost appears to try to invalidate Jake's struggles (although I know that wasn't your intention) and doesn't really think about the bigger picture. Essentially a rich man with all the power is dangling money at you and saying it should be an easy win while you're someone who desperately needs that money and you don't want to say no else he could ruin your career. In that situation, most people would say yes. It wasn't a choice. And it shares a horrifying similarity with Harvey Weinstien and others who use their power to manipulate people into doing what they want them to do. You can't say for sure that you wouldn't have done it, and it devalues Jake's experience by saying that. And regardless of whether you would have done it or not, no one expected he would literally be tortured, and ofc he wouldn't have done it knowing that in hindsight. That's the position you find yourself in, knowing how bad it became, so again it's easier to say you wouldn't have done it. Otherwise I do adore you and your videos Cam, I just think there's a few more nuances and seriousness involved in the situation than you gave it credit for.
Most of this was good, but the solitary confinement take was a bit victim blamey. Especially with the amount of medica & student l debt in the US - it's understandable why someone would agree to that _especially knowing jimmy fakes parts of his videos._ I very much doubt that Jake thought he would actually be *literally tortured.* The take just reels of the whole "why didht she leave him?" "why did she go back to him?" narrative with victims of domestic abuse... It shows a fundamental lack of understanding about how power dynamics, manipulation, and abuse works and completely warps your perspective. Jimmy knew he had control over Jake and could get him to return to a situation where he could dehumanise, torture, and traumatise him. That element isn't about youtube videos, that element is because Jimmy is sadistic and gets joy out of tormenting people, making a video out of it is just a bonus, "good business sense" to him. Please do better with this sort of thing in future - I still enjoy the videos, but was annoyed with that element.

After watching 5 different youtubers cover this topic, Cam is the first that has actually taken it seriously, had valid and insightful points to add to the video, and has by far been the first I’ve seen to actually look at this from the perspective of the everyman, and not solely from a place of being a youtuber.
Also, I don’t think him using CGI is a bad thing. But it’s the fact that he openly says that everything is real and that he doesn’t use CGI and his kid audience will watch that and think that he doesn’t when it’s not true so it’s not that he uses CGI to me that’s an issue. It’s the lying that’s the problem. I will admit that I am a flawed person. You don’t see that when you watch my TH-cam videos but I’m not gonna deny it if someone asked me if I’m always positive the answer is no. And that’s the problem that I have with MrBeast is not his CGI usage it’s the denial of it.

It's people (and those in power) whose got a lifestyle like jimmy who causes such rifts in the first place. We support, praise and encourage rich people, while not regarding those in need the most. Especially when the expectation is that they'll have to be thankful that a white rich dude was so "gracious" in giving them something they should've had in the first place. But society has failed them from the beginning. I'm not saying jimmy owes them anything, but I won't praise someone who's got so much money, a company that drives in said money that caters to a society that has such extreme differences between peoples well being and life... Celebrities, politicians, wealthy people have unsustainable lifestyles that are at the expense of other people's hardships. It's not balanced. And while it may not ever be possible to achieve such balance, the imbalance we have now is not something I wish we as humans try to keep.

I watch some of his videos with my son & I have physical health but also PTSD, BDP, severe anxiety depression etc and I’ve always wondered from an “adults” perspective if they vet the people who are doing the more extreme challenges. I’d 100 do solitary confinement purely for my son. But I know my mental health would be BAD! So how do they check. And especially if someone is working for you, I know in the UK companies have to take mental health seriously.

I think it's the tone of his philanthropy videos, and the way he talks to the people he's helping that really makes me personally uncomfortable. There's a clip of him being so insanely tone death with one of the people he's helping, and it nearly killed me. I really believe that he doesn't care and is using it for his image.

If you’re gonna destroy someone’s car for a video you’ll make tons of money on, at least buy the guy a brand new car. This, of course, all just testimony of one guy with a bone to grind, so I’m not all-in on that, but if it’s as he told it, it’s really shitty.
I think the overall message of all of this to come out about the business side, not the other allegations, is that Mr Beast is 1) making sick amounts of money off people’s suffering, like he’s some sort of savior, when it’s all ultimately making him wayyy MORE money (which we already knew since it’s his business model) and 2) he doesn’t pay all the people who are actually providing him with the entertainment and emotional core of his content with the anywhere near the value they’re providing him. (But he has a special crew of best buds who presumably do get more, and get treated wayyy better.)
I mean, sure, a business has to make a profit, but does it need to be that out of proportion? Such that a dude whose car he destroyed FOR CONTENT doesn’t get a new car (plus covered of the taxes and fees) that the company can definitely afford?
As for his philanthropy: he centers himself as the savior. Sure, the money has to come from somewhere, but the way he goes about it is clearly purely for his TH-cam career. Why does he need to have those creepy thumbnails, and why lie about giving blind people their sight back? He paid for people with terrible eyesight to have the surgery that they couldn’t afford, but he didn’t heal the blind. It feels exploitative. Perhaps pay for the philanthropy with the stunt videos. There are many different ways to do philanthropy.
The main distaste I have has been the same as always. I’ve never been in his target demographic or been interested in his videos, but he’s hard to not at least be aware of if you use TH-cam, and I have always been put off by his “Lord Bountiful” act. Truly generous and kind people don’t make a huuuge profit off their charity and the people they help.

I think you kinda missed a point with the solitary vid. They said he was gonna get 300k for it. I dont think anyone would do it for £10, but the monetary incentive was kinda like a bribe. We can all say well i just wouldnt have done it but if it was offered and you thought ud atleast be safe and instantly get significantly better financially (which he didnt even get paid the full amount), i feel like actually a lot of people would do it.

cam ill be honest, I think criticising Jake for getting involved in the isolation video is a bit silly considering how he was essentially peer pressured into agreeing to it, particularly moreso as he needed the money, and i don't want to be rude, but this video as a whole felt like you were interjecting yourself a bit too much, 'I would never have taken that video deal' comes across as a bit insensitive - A fan since around 5 or 6 years ago

@@MikeyWins11 wasnt just pressured by money (also wasnt just 'money', it was LIFE changing money) but also peer pressure, there would have been a sense of feeling forced to finish or else disappoint his peers and employers, we've already seen how short of a fuse the employers have, also quiting after a huge setup has been created may feel awkward to let down all those who worked hard on it
yeah, we also don’t know if there was a contract or any sort of formal agreement that gave him an out (y’know, a safe word essentially)… like in research trials with human subjects, they have to be able to withdraw consent. and if there wasn’t any such provision then clearly not all parts of the video were well thought through.

Your commentary on things that are quasi-legal such as the drama surrounding Baby Reindeer and the Mr Beast controversy is very thoughtful and well-researched. Yes, you should play to your strengths and analyse situations like this because you have a very approachable way of cutting straight to the heart of the issues whilst remaining as impartial as is appropriate given the information being analysed.
Ok so sociopath isn't something that's used now and would be classed as 'Antisocial personality disorder'. As someone who has it its so easy to spot other people who also show the traits. MrBeast has always shown the traits, he gets gets enjoyment from putting people through the challenges and doesn't have any empathy for the other people actually in them, they are just a chess piece in his game. People with antisocial personality disorder tend to aim and end up in places of power like government, television, ceos ect and he strives for the top of youtube. He uses money and power to manipulate people which will be why he gets people who work for him or know him to do the videos because people who don't know him or someone involved will not take the treatment. People with aspd are also amazing at putting up a front of being a good person who cares for others and only wants the best (politicians do it all the time). Cult leaders and serial killers are also known for having aspd and its known that they have the facade of being a charismatic and kind person. The people close to him will also either be so manipulated into loyalty or will be bad people too because like calls to like, he will keep his personal circle small but they will all know the truth.
It takes so much therapy and working on yourself to deal with and handle aspd, it's taken me 5years and I still struggle. Everyday it is a conscious decision to be a better person but many don't do it because why be a good person when you can manipulate and end up at the top right? He 100% does not care about the drama or how it has affected anybody involved, he only cares about his money and his vision. He will put out a lawyer written statement and keep going on with his life as it is.
Publicly displayed "philanthropy" is the worst kind of vanity.

I like how you've covered the story, however I think you have been unfair and rather insensitive on some points. To say you wouldn't have done the solitary confinement video almost appears to try to invalidate Jake's struggles (although I know that wasn't your intention) and doesn't really think about the bigger picture. Essentially a rich man with all the power is dangling money at you and saying it should be an easy win while you're someone who desperately needs that money and you don't want to say no else he could ruin your career. In that situation, most people would say yes. It wasn't a choice. And it shares a horrifying similarity with Harvey Weinstien and others who use their power to manipulate people into doing what they want them to do. You can't say for sure that you wouldn't have done it, and it devalues Jake's experience by saying that. And regardless of whether you would have done it or not, no one expected he would literally be tortured, and ofc he wouldn't have done it knowing that in hindsight. That's the position you find yourself in, knowing how bad it became, so again it's easier to say you wouldn't have done it.
Otherwise I do adore you and your videos Cam, I just think there's a few more nuances and seriousness involved in the situation than you gave it credit for.

Most of this was good, but the solitary confinement take was a bit victim blamey. Especially with the amount of medica & student l debt in the US - it's understandable why someone would agree to that _especially knowing jimmy fakes parts of his videos._ I very much doubt that Jake thought he would actually be *literally tortured.*
The take just reels of the whole "why didht she leave him?" "why did she go back to him?" narrative with victims of domestic abuse... It shows a fundamental lack of understanding about how power dynamics, manipulation, and abuse works and completely warps your perspective. Jimmy knew he had control over Jake and could get him to return to a situation where he could dehumanise, torture, and traumatise him. That element isn't about youtube videos, that element is because Jimmy is sadistic and gets joy out of tormenting people, making a video out of it is just a bonus, "good business sense" to him.
Please do better with this sort of thing in future - I still enjoy the videos, but was annoyed with that element.

But it’s the fact that he openly says that everything is real and that he doesn’t use CGI and his kid audience will watch that and think that he doesn’t when it’s not true so it’s not that he uses CGI to me that’s an issue. It’s the lying that’s the problem. I will admit that I am a flawed person. You don’t see that when you watch my TH-cam videos but I’m not gonna deny it if someone asked me if I’m always positive the answer is no. And that’s the problem that I have with MrBeast is not his CGI usage it’s the denial of it.

I still think it's wrong to use people. No matter the cause. Him "rebuilding" and giving away stuff is just a fraction of what he earns. The problem lies in consumer capitalism. It's people (and those in power) whose got a lifestyle like jimmy who causes such rifts in the first place. We support, praise and encourage rich people, while not regarding those in need the most. Not their opinions not their situation. Especially when the expectation is that they'll have to be thankful that a white rich dude was so "gracious" in giving them something they should've had in the first place. But society has failed them from the beginning. I'm not saying jimmy owes them anything, but I won't praise someone who's got so much money, a company that drives in said money that caters to a society that has such extreme differences between peoples well being and life... Celebrities, politicians, wealthy people have unsustainable lifestyles that are at the expense of other people's hardships. It's not balanced. And while it may not ever be possible to achieve such balance, the imbalance we have now is not something I wish we as humans try to keep.

22:55 Mental Health, Ive been hospitalised for my mental health. I watch some of his videos with my son & I have physical health but also PTSD, BDP, severe anxiety depression etc and I’ve always wondered from an “adults” perspective if they vet the people who are doing the more extreme challenges. I’d 100 do solitary confinement purely for my son. But I know my mental health would be BAD! So how do they check. And especially if someone is working for you, I know in the UK companies have to take mental health seriously.
