The whole Kondo " If it doesn't bring you joy get rid of it" thing resonated with me. So I got rid of my Hoover, broom, mop....... and husband 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Personally, I would go for the dress in that fabric as if it creases so badly, a jumpsuit would end up even more creased.
I hate linen for this reason and you can end up looking like a bag of rubbish if you’re not careful with what you make with it xxx

If you can't quite go Marie Kondo, or have lots of rayon/slippery fabric that doesn't have enough body to hold itself up when folded, I've found something that helped my fabric towers quite a bit. Stacker boards. At least, that's how I think of them. I get a better view (and easier access) to fabric "stacked up" by putting in little boards ... just stack little boards (cardboard, whatever comes to hand) in with your folded up fabric. I put in one every 3 or 4 items. It seems to give the stack stability and -- more importantly -- makes it much, much easier to slip fabric in and out of the stack without shifting the whole thing.

I add my vote to the dress. It is a classic design and although you may not wear it as much as a jumpsuit THIS year, over time you will. I MK everything in my home and I feel so much better!

My son just graduated airforce bootcamp and the families were allowed to visit their bunks. I had to laugh when I saw the beautifully organized lockers . I think the military thought of minimalizing and folding way before Marie Kondo!!

  • @MegOfBroccoli
    @MegOfBroccoli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Great video. Kondo was so helpful when I was decluttering. I really wanted to try the minimalism thing and discovered it hasn't hampered my sewing at all. I don't have a stash any longer, got rid of everything but the silks (never thought I could do it!). I don't keep scraps from projects, so when I'm done with a garment or project, I revert back to the "default" of just having my sewing tools and machines and gear and very few "leftovers" from a project (extra buttons, the thread). My sewing room never looked better. I agree that keeping fabric for months is demotivating, I also lost interest in so much fabric I purchased. Now I just buy for one garment at a time, no other purchases until I'm onto the next garment.

My vote is for the meridian dress, it'd be so fun with those giant dots! I also love marie kondo! I went through my fabric stash earlier this year after watching. There's still a ton left, but hey there's lots of joy in there!

The dress has more long term wear/use possibilities, get a different fabric that won’t “crotch” wrinkle for the jumpsuit. My opinion😉

Thank you Kate! I'm very much enjoying your videos. I especially loved the Sewing Bee series - Such a lot of work for you, and much appreciated! I love that huge dot print fabric, but I'd go with a simpler silhouette - maybe a shift dress? If it's between your two options, I'd go with the dress. Oh, and thank you for introducing lots of new-to-me indie pattern designers! I'm back to sewing after many years, as knitwear and crochet designing take up the bulk of my time, but I really do love to sew too :)

I totally get how you need to have your work space organised. Nothing like feeling the need to sew and being prevented from doing so by having to wade through clutter first! Good luck with the spot fabric. I would want to make it into something which will forgive its tendency to crease, so I would opt for the dress. I think the spottiness of the fabric would possibly overwhelm your attractiveness if made in a top to toe outfit like the jumpsuit, whereas the dress would enable your legs to be shown. Just a thought! Vx

Love the red spot fabric - a dress would be my choice as I hate creases around back of knees & crotch area on jumpsuits (I have a RTW jumpsuit which needs dry cleaning after every wear due to creasing). Love the mother fudge expression, chuckled heartily at that.....

Hi. Thankyou for your show. The blouse you have on is most lovely. The meridian dress would be lovely dots. The kondo method can be taken w A grain of salt. It is nice to reconsider what we have and why we have it. Yet, extreme clear outs can negatively impact for a long time. The folding fabric method is a great idea. Thankyou for showing. I will try it. Keep up the good work.

Just a thought- people who love to sew could probably get a lot more done I'd they spent less time making their space Instagramable and put that energy into actually sewing. Love the organisation tips, but as long as your space functions for you and you love it, that's all that matters.

I'm really affected by my surroundings and having somewhere to go that I find inspiring makes me want to make stuff. I don't really love it at the moment, so for me making it look nice has a huge effect. I'm only going to do this once I've got the space working well though - practical and pretty is the long term goal!

Kate! You are a star - I moved house 4 weeks ago and have been putting off organising my sewing room but now I’m inspired to tackle it. I fold my clothes vertically, never thought to do that with fabric. I’ve been a long time fabric hoarder as well, so there’s a lot to store. Let’s just say I’m not allowing myself to buy any more this year...
Go the Zadie and purchase a steamer! Much easier than ironing :)

My choice would be The paper cut patterns dress, just think the fabric would work better. Plenty of other choices for the Zadie around.. I have kondo’d my house over the last two years and even Kondo our suitcases when we travel. • @lesleyscott2117

Nope, not the viscose farthest Zadie. It probably needs body to drape and you’ll regret using the spot. Go with a heavier linen for Zadie. I’ve just had mine printed A0 this afternoon and I’m currently sewing for a trip to Alaska, so Zadie really must wait, especially as we’re going into winter! I used to try so hard to make fabrics work for my pattern and if they don’t they just don’t. But I don’t need to tell you that! Loved your Kondo discussion, I can’t believe how much easier it is to see my tee shirts since I Kondo’d them. My family love paying me out for that! Excellent video, thoroughly enjoyed watching your chat x

I think the red spot fabric would look better in the jumpsuit. Because, the dots would be quite broken up visually by the multiple layers and folds of the wrap-look in the dress. Please let us know what you decide, and show us the finished garment! I love the fabric, and am sure it will be stunning, whatever you decide!
(I just read the clown thoughts below! That *is* another thought!)

Hi Kate, your stash is looking lovely and tidy 👌. Gorgeous tunic that your wearing and I adore the fabric 💝. I can't decide on which outfit so I'm going to sit on the fence and say that they would both look awesome. I suppose if I had to choose I would go for the Zadie...only because I'm not much of a dress wearer and would probably get more wear out of it...looking at it logically. But the dress looks awesome too...ahhhhhh...a hard choice but whatever you choose will look fab I'm sure 😁👍💕😘

Thank you so much for this lovely vlog and demo how to fold your fabric a la Marie Kondo. Its very clever. Isn't it. Nice to get a peek at your new sewing space. I loved the sewing space tour you and Rachel vlogged a couple years ago.I think fabric choices for your sewing projects is a very personal decision. But I agree with Rachel Stalker on the creases issue. I wear linen trousers that crease but the spot fabric looks like it would crease much more than linen.

Oh the large red spot rocks, not like you to depart from the stripes!! 😂 I could see you in another shirt with the red spot too - but in particular - reeta midi shirt dress from named- it flashed into my mind
when you held that red spot fabric up. Would look awesome. I like the red spot for the dress coz is more dress weight than jumpsuit. I think go on a shopping hunt for something awesome for the jumpsuit. Coz that would be fun too. And let’s face it you’re fabric spending is looking better than most. Very impressive, it’s so self controlled of you. So glad you are sewing again 👌

Morning Kate, I loved your little chat today. I organised my fabric like that a few weeks ago, the downside for me is I have it crammed in and as soon as I remove a fabric it all gets disturbed. Regarding the spot fabric, I think the dress would disturb the pattern too much. The jump suit would show it off much better. Lots of the RTW are made from very thin fabrics. Oh to be young ( and thin) again to be able to wear stuff like this . Good luck.

My vote is for the Meridian Dress because you named so many reservations about using th fabric for the jumpsuit that really make sense, EVEN THO’ you say you’ll get more use out of it, th reasons you state why the fabric choice is wrong, may take over. Pattern mated w perfect fabric for the dress? Even tho’ you say you may not wear it that often, a good match will mean you’ll prob’ly be surprised at how many times you’ll pull it out of your closet.

You know when you see something and an image pops in your head? When you brought up the red spotted fabric what came to the forefront of my mind was the creature in the children's book "Put me in the zoo". For that reason I have to say go for the dress, or I'm afraid you will give off a circus/zoo animal vibe as you jazz down the street in your bound to be wrinkly jumpsuit. And if memories of circus "sparks joy" for you, then the jumpsuit it must be.

I agree with you, the pattern would go well with the jumpsuit, but the fabric is probably best for the dress. I'd worry the fabric wouldn't like the stress in the seams of the jumpsuit, and might come out at the crotch.

Ive already made a wearable toile of the jacket and have some heavy black linen to make the next version. I am going to make the armhole larger but I do have bulging biceps! I live the red and blue spot fabric. I think I'd make the dress and buy some heavier fabric for the h=jumpsuit.

Which to make with the fabric? Well, you've said it creases like mad, enough that _you_ feel you'll have to iron it. So ... which one is easier to iron? Which one will you love enough that you will say, "Right, 5 minutes with the iron and I'm good to go." Think of standing in front of your closet and picking out clothes for the day and choose the pattern future you will actually pull out and wear. Hope that helps?
I'm beginning to try to make myself think that way and it really makes the difference come clear between what fantasy me will wear (the one with enough time, more flair, whose weight doesn't go up and down, who will do hand washing, etc.) and what real me will wear.

@@alibee85Ali, its amazing how much the folding technique helps you see your fabric and frees up a lot of space. My Wish List on line is brimming over, so now I only order fabrics when I can coordinate them with my existing wardrobe or making up a new capsule. Have a great day.

I think the navy blue and red dot fabric would look great in the ZADIE jumpsuit, but the fabric might not be strong enough for a jumpsuit, as you will need strong fabric around your bottom, crotch area and side seams on your upper thighs.

I have also kondoed my house but not my sewing room. Brilliant idea to do the sewing space. I will also add some type of marking to identify the amount of fabric. I am always measuring fabric to see if i have enough for a pattern. Any suggestions how to mark?

you could pin paper to the fabric with the length written on. Or if you wanted to go pro buy one of those dress taggers they use in shops 👍

I reckon the folding fabric thing doesn't work for soft ones like viscose, jersey or georgette.
I have no extra room for sewing. In our bed room is my sewing machine in a little table and overlocker gets only out of the box, when used. I always have to be tidy, not to annoy my family with my sewing stuff.
I'd go for the dress, because of the quality of the fabric.

Make the Papercut dress. You seemed much more in love with that. Plus, you won’t wear the Zadie tons if the fabric requires special care. Make the Zadie out of something else.

Kate, does Rachel find that she has the same difficulty with sewing as you? Like you said it's your hobby and it's supposed to be fun. As a quilter as well this is something that I think we do more than garment sewers because the amount of fabric that we have is enormous by comparison stacking just does not work. I mean at the very start when you only have about 20 different fabrics yes you can stack them and find what you are looking for however the longer you have been doing it the more fabric you accumulate it is just impossible. I have 4 bookshelves that are 183 cm full of all my fabrics, interfacing, etc. Yes way to much of it all but I do make quilts for donation as well as for sale so due to varying taste I have to have a lot. My vote is for the jumpsuit I definitely think the fabric lends itself to both though. Good luck with your choice can't wait to see which you wind up making.

Your drawers of fabric look nice and tidy. However the 'fold and stand' technique will only work with woven fabrics. Knits will not fold or stand up like that. How do you store your knitted fabric or even georgette and other fine fabrics?

Go for the dress, I think you will have more wear as a jumper may not be in fashion for too long. I think the circles in the jump suit may look a little like a clown suit.
