    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    The difference with the elbow also has to do with making yourself a smaller target. I used to get picked on by my infantry friends for shooting with my elbow up… as a rifleman I’m sure having it down stops it getting shot off but I prefer to hunt comfortably. The bucks aren’t shooting back… yet…

    * For me as a bird hunter/shotgun shooter, the elbow out method gives me better range of movement. It also allows me to consistently shoulder the butt stock to the same point which is vital to becoming a consistent wing shot. Military personal try to keep a profile that is as small as possible. Having your elbow out while conducting room to room clearance of enemy targets may result in the enemy seeing that elbow resulting in an unpleasant experience.

    Keeping your arms from turning into chickenwings is important for soldiers because the body armor only goes over the torso and back. When you lift your arm , your ribs and heart is exposed.

    I find that if my arm is down then my chest muscle is contracted and creates a bigger distance between the stock and my bone

    I find with 300prc or 30-06 that I prefer to have only a very minimal flare. Little bit of flare to put my trigger finger in a more natural position. But too much flare and it gets lose and starts bouncing into my shoulder or my collar bone.
    So I just like to have a little bit of flare and pull the rifle into myself about as hard as I can while keeping it stable.

    The chicken wing is impractical in a tactical setting, so most AR shooters prefer to tuck their arms in to simulate shooting in that kind of environment, regardless of whether they'll ever use it. The chicken wing, as a shooting stance, is still used to teach basic rifle marksmanship because it's more effective as a marksman posture for the reasons Ron states here.

    I shoot with my elbow up too. I also hold the butt pad firmly in that muscular pocket, otherwise the rifle punches you instead of pushing you. Relax and go with the recoil instead of bracing against it, let it go through you. You will feel more recoil shooting prone than you will sitting or standing. Quit target practicing from the bench. You won't find a bench out on the hunt, practice in a kneeling, sitting and standing off hand. Learn to use your sling to steady your shot.

    Shooting all "crunched up" with the elbow down isn't for accuracy or comfort. Lifting you're elbow "chicken winging" tends to turn your body when you shoot. Keeping it tucked in let's you square up you're target, keeping your plate carrier in the front. It's combat stance

    You really want your arm down, tucked against your ribcage for stability. If you need to scrunch down, scrunch.

    😂 I'll chicken wing anyway with a dangerous game rifle . I'll chicken wing until I fly away . An ar-15 has no recoil in comparison.

    To each his own, but it looks a little goofy & isn’t as strong as elbow down. Biomechanics disagree, that you would have more stability & strength with the elbow up. Correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t have a phd in biomechanics. It’s more likely that Ron is accustom to elbow up, it’s so much more comfortable for him, & when he tries the elbow tucked in & shoots a larger caliber it’s such a contrast from what is used too. It’s more of a shock, therefore seeming inferior to what already works & works well. The following shots he puts his elbow back up, & it feels more tame & controllable. i.e. that’s what his mind expects & gets, it’s familiar.
    So, elbows down boys.

    • @goinhot9133
      @goinhot9133 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elbow down, shoulder turned in to make the pocket. All the same except with the elbow down.
