웹툰 쪽 일하는 사람입니다. 처음 타락천사 조형을 필두로 채널에 있는 영상을 다 보다가 여기에 꽂혀버렸네요. AI 관련해서 사견 얹으신 거 보고 정말 많이 공감하고 있습니다. 웹툰의 경우 일부 플랫폼부터 AI에 환영하는 편인지라 이야기는 정복하지 못했으나 적어도 '이미지'에 해당하는 작업들을 대체하기 위해 부단한 노력을 하고 있죠. 게임 원화쪽 중소기업은 아예 AI로 뽑아내고 리터칭하는 데에만 사람을 쓴다는 얘기도 공공연히 돌 정도고, 사람이 그리는 일러스트만 취급하는 일부 중개 플랫폼은 견디지 못해 문을 닫는 지경에 이르렀네요. 저는 디지털 아트를 중심으로 활동하고 있지만, 정작 제가 가장 행복한 순간은 손으로 직접 붓으로 물감을 찍어 바르거나, 소조든 조소든 무언가를 깎고 덧붙이며 직접 촉감을 느끼는 순간이라고 생각합니다. 디지털 아트는 효율적이고 편리하지만, (제 개인적인 경험상) 특유의 생산성 중심의 환경과 삭막함... 덕분인지 아날로그 방식으로 작업하는 것보다 더 많은 인풋(영감)을 필요로 하더라구요. 개인적으로 생산성+상업성까지 좋은 작업물을 끊임없이 SNS에 업로드하며 지속적으로 주목받고 가치있는 작가가 되려면 아이러니하게도 촉감과 물감이나 재료의 향 등 복합적으로 느껴지는 아날로그로부터 영감을 받는 게 중요하다고 생각하는 편입니다. 다른 분야는 모르겠지만, 이전에 만화애니 입시에서는 실제 인물의 수채화나 석고소묘 등의 데생이 반드시 필요했죠. 그렇지만 이젠 그런 과정을 거치지 않아도 모든 것이 너무 편리해지고 디지털화되면서 직접 스스로 찾아 경험해야 하는 지경에 이르렀습니다. 말씀해주신대로 직접 나서지 않는 한 즐기는 이미지며 작업과정은 진짜인지 가짜인지 구별해야 한다는 것에서 오는 피로감도 생겨났구요. 팁은 무수히 넘치고, 상업성을 끌어올릴 포장재는 많지만 그 포장지를 가지고 누구에게 어떤 의미로 선물을 주고 싶은지, 그리고 그를 통해 자신은 무얼 하고 싶은건지 탐색하는 과정이 비생산적으로 치부되는 것에서 깊은 공감과 유감을 느낍니다. 어쩌다보니 글이 길어져버렸는데;; 여하튼... 그러한 씁쓸함, 공감대와 동시에 작품과 함께 알려주시는 예술작품에 대한 비화와 해석, 그리고 조형에 대한 깊은 감각은 보는 것만으로도 그림에 대해 관성적으로 변해버린 흥미와 작업에 대한 욕구를 불러일으키고, 여전히 자신은 그림에 대해 모르는 것이 많다는 반성을 안겨주면서 이 영상 자체가 제겐 큰 의미가 되어 부족하게나마 글을 적고 갑니다. 앞으로 주기적으로 영상을 볼 것 같아요. 조심스럽게 이 글 또한 작가님의 작고도 도움이 될법한 영감으로 작용되길 바랍니다. 제가 작가님께 큰 선물을 받은 것처럼요. ^^
편지 같은 소중한 댓글 달아 주셔서 감사합니다. 저 또한 써주신 장문의 댓글을 큰 선물로 위로 받았네요. 정말 고맙습니다. 말씀하신 피로감은 창작자들이 가장 예민하게 느끼는 부분이 아닐까 합니다. 너무 많이 보이고, 참고하고,판단하고....저도 예고입시, 미대입시를 겪으며 습도에 따른 연필과 켄트지, 겨울이면 손주름 사이마다 피가 터져나오는 흙 작업 등 온갖 재료와의 상호작용을 먼저 접하고 이후에 재료를 변형해가는 과정,그리고 그 과정에 담겨지는 철학, 모두 좋아했기에 조소라는 전공을 계속해왔는데 어느순간 현실과 타협을 해야하는 순간이 오더군요. 그러면서 선택하게 된 것이 3D모델링이었고 처음에는 모든게 좋았습니다. 재료관리, 물리법칙, 공간...등 한계가 없이 전기만 있으면 내가 만들 수 있는 것은 무엇이든지 만들 수 있겠다는 흥분에 참 열심히도 공부했었죠. 그러다 문득 그 한계가 없다는 것은 동시에 현실에 존재하지 않는다는 것을 의미하더라구요(말씀하신대로 감성이 없는 효율만이 극대화된 수단인거죠) 그 갈증이 3D프린팅으로 이어지고 여러 사유를 거쳐 지금의 저는 이 컨텐츠를 만들게 되었습니다. 그리고 이렇게 전달이 되었네요. 매우 가슴이 벅찬 순간입니다. 사실 전 지금도 3D프린팅이 매우 기괴한 방식처럼 느껴질 때가 많습니다. 어떠한 형상을 몇 천, 몇 만장의 레이어로 잘게 잘라 그것을 다시 하나씩 쌓아 올린다라....도예의 코일링이라는 방식이 있긴하지만 숫자에서 너무 폭력적인 느낌이 듭니다. 그래서 인류역사에서 캐스팅 방식에서 탈피된 형상제조 방식이 나온 시점이라고 봐요. 때문에 앞으로는 볼 수있는 것은 모두 만져볼 수 있는 세상이 찾아오지 않을까하며 공포 반 희망 반의 생각을 합니다. 저는 AI가 발전할 수록 개개인이 생각하고 정의해야되는 일의 중요성과 의미는 더욱더 커질 것이라는 희망을 갖고있습니다. 무엇을 만들기보다 왜가 더욱 중요해지는 시기말이죠. 말씀하신 대로 이미지, 정보는 이제 구하기 너무 쉬워지고, 이 컨텐츠만 해도 명화를 실물로 본게 아니라 구글로 '이미지'를 찾아 모델링한 것에 불과한것이니까요. 그러나 이 '과정'을 컨텐츠로 만들게 되면 또 다른 의미가 부여되고 다양한 해석을 가능하게 하죠. 그런점에서 외부에서 보는 순수미술이 일반인에게 질타를 받는 경향도 있지만 자신을 표현하고 전달한다는 의미에 있어선 가장 근본적인 창작욕을 따라 솔직하게 발전한 것이라는 생각을 합니다. 더 나아가 만화는 다른 장르보다 의도를 강력하게 전달 할 수 있는 매체기도 하구요. 현재에도, 앞으로도 제가 하려는 일이 의구심이 들겠지만 창작을 업으로 삼은 이상 포기보단 계속 해나아가야할 이유를 찾으려 합니다. 쓰다보니 두서가 없어졌는데 긴 소감 적어주셔서 다시한번 감사합니다. 창작자들에게 매우 큰 과도기가 온 것 같습니다. 걷고 계시는 웹툰의 길에서 좋은 일 많이 있으시길 기원합니다. :)
@@Di_to 혁명의 시대에 우리들은 살고 있습니다. 몇년전까지만해도 상상할 수 조차 없었던 기술의 등장으로 인류는 전혀다른 세계로 진입하고 있습니다. 사실 우리들은 준비된게 없습니다. 철학과 예술이 우리들이 나아가야할 길을 명확하게 보여줘야만 하는데...... 지금은 그런 모습을 찾기 힘듭니다. 첨단기술의 거대함은 몇몇 천재적인 개인이 무엇을 할 수 있는 단계를 까마득히 넘어섰기 때문일겁니다. 작가님과 같은 작은 개인들이 모여서 하나하나의 정성들이 쌓이면 결국 그게 실현될 겁니다. 저는 일년전부터 소소하게 소설을 쓰는 사람입니다. 그 작은 글 한편을 쓰는것도 무섭게 힘들더군요. 울고 웃고를 반복하며 써내려가면서..... 아~! 결국 내가 기쁘구나..!! 하는걸 알았습니다. 아마도 작가님도 같았을것입니다. 만드는 모습내내 즐거움이 느껴집니다. 그래서 더 좋았습니다. ^^
"Flaming June" is one of my favorite paintings. Your ability to take a two-dimensional image and sculpt it into the beautiful object you've shown us is astounding. I'm truly impressed.
I was coming in here to say the same thing. I fell in love with the painting years ago, I even have a small copy of the painting, sadly still packed away in one of my many boxes from my last big move almost 14-15 years ago.

영상의 의도대로 느끼신 것 같아 기쁩니다. 어떤 사건의 과정과 흐름은 대체될 수 없는 것들이죠. 현재 AI의 창작은 과정을 뺀 입력과 출력으로만 이루어져 사람들이 본능적으로 거부감을 느낀다고 생각해요. 이미지가 물쓰듯 마구잡이로 버려지고 있는 현실이 동료 아티스트들을 보면서도 참 안타까울 뿐입니다. 좋은 댓글 감사합니다.

Astounding work. This is my favorite painting from Frederic Leighton. Flaming June is currently here in Puerto Rico and every time I see her, it brings calmness to my heart, the same calmness and emotion you captured in making this painting into a real life piece. Bravo!

Absolutely mesmerizing process, outstanding final result of a meticulous, tedious work driven by true commitment, compassion and determination. The detail oriented approach, the importance of each individual step from the idea of: “is it even possible ?” through the detective work of finding out, understanding visual distortion through perspective and translating them in a three dimensional model all the way to the painting and coloring process is almost addictive to watch and rewatch. Incredible! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing but I found I was torn between reading the words and watching the film; both seemed so unmissable and yet and one took time away from the other. I don't know what the answer to that is. Johnson's Baby Oil is a very unusual wood treatment!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing this painting several times when it was displayed at the Met in NYC recently. The color is striking and the image has so much depth. What a great project to put this amazing image in your hands and touch it. So cool.
About 20 years ago, I bought a Dream Dictionary and this painting was on the cover. I've loved the image ever since, and this version is absolutely beautiful!
Flaming June is one of my favorite artworks of all time. I can't remember how I discovered her many, many years ago, but one day while traveling in Spain (I live in the U.S.), I visited the Prado Museum and there she was, headlining a "Sleeping Beauty" travel exhibition! I could have never imagined being able to see her in person! I was enthralled for a long time, staring at her, taking it all in and not wanting to ever leave. I cannot even express in words how much I love your recreation and the care you took with every aspect. You are truly an artist and I hope you will place this piece for sale on your site, as I will be first in line to purchase it! Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!
When I was a younger boy, I was very taken with the notion of being a renaissance man. An all rounder who could work across multiple disciplines of creative endeavours. While living on the island (born and raised in PR), I was blessed with opportunities to visit El museo de Arte de Ponce and got to see The Flaming June several times. Truly an amazing painting. And truly a great work you did replicating it!
This is just wonderful and truly inspiring. I've been for a while with a project in mind (and half of the materials bought and waiting for being used) but didn't find the strength to start with it. It was gonna be an anniversary gift for my wife and a similar concept of yours, to transpose Cosiendo la Vela of Joaquín Sorolla into a book nook. But the same train of thoughts you explain go through myself every everytime and never put hands on work. Hopefully I'll start it as soon as I can, no matter the result. Thanks for the video.
First of all I want to say that you are really talented!! Omg I was stunned when I saw all the process. As you say in the video, Flaming June is really iconic in Puerto Rico, I remember seeing there that painting in bags and sheets. I feel very connected to this video, I think in social media is very difficult to be unique because we constantly see a lot of images, it can be overwhelming. Sometimes I think If I'm talented or authentic but I feel that we have to be in our spaces for a very long time to produce, to know what we really want to express. "Flaming June" is one of my favorite paintings. Your ability to take a two-dimensional image and sculpt it into the beautiful object you've shown us is astounding. I'm truly impressed.
I was coming in here to say the same thing. I fell in love with the painting years ago, I even have a small copy of the painting, sadly still packed away in one of my many boxes from my last big move almost 14-15 years ago.

Absolutely mesmerizing process, outstanding final result of a meticulous, tedious work driven by true commitment, compassion and determination.
The detail oriented approach, the importance of each individual step from the idea of: “is it even possible ?” through the detective work of finding out, understanding visual distortion through perspective and translating them in a three dimensional model all the way to the painting and coloring process is almost addictive to watch and rewatch. Only those who own the process and make it happen can truly understand, appreciate the satisfaction that this brings. Thank you for sharing and uploading this inspiring video.

Incredible! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing but I found I was torn between reading the words and watching the film; both seemed so unmissable and yet and one took time away from the other. I don't know what the answer to that is. Johnson's Baby Oil is a very unusual wood treatment!!!
I had a hard time watching and reading the words so i went into the gear symbol and slowed down the video speed.

About 20 years ago, I bought a Dream Dictionary and this painting was on the cover. I've loved the image ever since, and this version is absolutely beautiful!
Flaming June is one of my favorite artworks of all time. I can't remember how I discovered her many, many years ago, but one day while traveling in Spain (I live in the U.S.), I visited the Prado Museum and there she was, headlining a "Sleeping Beauty" travel exhibition! I could have never imagined being able to see her in person! I was enthralled for a long time, staring at her, taking it all in and not wanting to ever leave. I cannot even express in words how much I love your recreation and the care you took with every aspect. You are truly an artist and I hope you will place this piece for sale on your site, as I will be first in line to purchase it! Thank you for sharing your talent with the world!

When I was a younger boy, I was very taken with the notion of being a renaissance man. An all rounder who could work across multiple disciplines of creative endeavours. This is just wonderful and truly inspiring. I've been for a while with a project in mind (and half of the materials bought and waiting for being used) but didn't find the strength to start with it. It was gonna be an anniversary gift for my wife and a similar concept of yours, to transpose Cosiendo la Vela of Joaquín Sorolla into a book nook. But the same train of thoughts you explain go through myself every everytime and never put hands on work. Hopefully I'll start it as soon as I can, no matter the result.

First of all I want to say that you are really talented!! Omg I was stunned when I saw all the process. As you say in the video, Flaming June is really iconic in Puerto Rico, I remember seeing there that painting in bags and sheets. I feel very connected to this video, I think in social media is very difficult to be unique because we constantly see a lot of images, it can be overwhelming. Sometimes I think If I'm talented or authentic but I feel that we have to be in our spaces for a very long time to produce, to know what we really want to express.
