  • This session deals with the age-old controversy concerning the extent of the atonement. It explains the biblical and theological basis for the Reformed doctrine of limited or definite atonement, and demonstrates that such a view is the only ground for a secure redemption.

Wow. Deep, deep stuff. The likes of which I never heard in the arminian church and school I grew up in, where theology was sloppy and there were so many holes. As I listen to reformed theology I marvel at how so many seemingly disparate texts come together beautifully and click. I am so grateful.

THE HOLY GOD OF THE UNIVERSE CHOSE us!! Our FATHER CHOSE us to be the BRIDE OF CHRIST!! HE DELIVERED us FROM THE POWER OF GROSS DARKNESS AND TRANSLATED us INTO THE KINGDOM OF HIS DEAR SON. WHAT A GLORIOUS WORK OF GOD!! WOW!!

Dear brother, you are in error. You were never saved because you were chosen. You were saved only if *you* chose to trust the good news that Jesus came to this world to die on a cross as the sacrifice for all humanity's sins, *even* the sins of those burning in hell right now. God didn't program you into believing; you chose to believe. God in his sovereignty can let man have freewill. Mind-blowing, I know.
He does nothing without reason. If you are saved only because you were arbitrarily chosen for no apparent reason than "for his glory" then the whole content of the Bible is incoherent, salvation truly impossible, God's mercy an obscure matter and God's glory a conceptual pool for the thoughts of men.
The Bible is the revelation of God to humanity. His entire counsel. He did not hide from us an unknown secret reason why he chose some disabled animals to be saved and damn the rest to hell.
I pray you will come to know the true gospel of salvation by grace.

Your definition or meaning of predestination forces you to conclude that God created some people only to destroy them. That goes contrary to the nature of God and makes him unfit to judge the world. Justified by grace through faith in jesus's atonement. Salvation is a free gift and one must fully trust that all are sinners and god loves us so much that he gave his only son to take the hell/punishment for our sins on the cross.
Whoever believes and confess will receive forgiveness for all sins past future present and will receive eternal life .
One must truly trust in the sacrifice and forgiveness of jesus.
May not work on the first try but keep on praying.
Prayer: father god I am a sinner
I believe jesus died for my sins so I can be forgiven because he took our punishment.
May you please forgive me for all my sins and may you help me to believe I'm saved by grace through faith in your promise of salvation.
Lord jesus may you give me eternal life.
Thank you in jesus name amen.
      Please read Roman's and galatians.
Please watch inspiring philosophy:faith vs works.
      Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.
      Roman's 4:5-8
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
      And whose sins are covered;
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin
Salvation is a gift but works are optional to those who have been saved by grace through faith in jesus atonement to receive full redemption and forgiveness, credited perfection and eternal life.
Christ in our place so god remains holy and just dealing with sin appropriately with the death of holy jesus to forgive all who turn to the good news/gospel.

I agree, but this is only one side of the story. What about the sufficiency of the atonement, the infinite value of the blood of Christ, the infinite value of the price paid. The price paid is certainly not an underpayment, but is it an over-payment ? Does not Christ's payment suffice to save all sinners including those that will perish eternally ? Of course it does. Because the price paid is of infinite value sufficient to save the entire human race, should the entire human race come to Christ, we can certainly say that the price paid was an over-payment, the price paid can easily cover the sins of those that perish in hell had they repented of their sin. The reprobate perish due to lack of repentance, and not due to the atonement not having satisfied for their sins. The sufficiency of the satisfaction for all men, including those that perish must be affirmed, otherwise the gospel cannot be proclaimed. Reformed theology is clear that Christ's satisfaction as it regards its sufficiency was for all men, not for the elect, and this is the gospel. The atonement is limited in its application (some come to faith) but not it s sufficiency (the death of Christ took away the sin of the entire human race in that whosoever receives the atonement through faith shall be saved).

Migi and Aaron, man has no say in his salvation, God brings us to life and we are born of his will entirely John 1:13. Similarly to a baby's birth that is due to the parents and not to the baby (the baby does not make a decision to be conceived and born), so our new birth and conversion is due entirely to God. This however has nothing to do with the atonement being unlimited in its suffciency, which is something that is affirmed in traditional Reformed theology, but was not affirmed in this video. In particular the price paid by Christ with his blood is of an infinite value, sufficient to redeem an infinite amount of sinners, the sufficiency of the satisfaction is affirmed in the Heidelberg Catechism and the Canons of Dort, in particular Zacharias Ursinus in his commentary of the Heidelberg Catechism made it clear that Christ satisfied for all men, and the sole reason all men are not saved is unbelief and not any defect in the death of Christ or any exclusions made by Christ at his death of a single sinner, they were all covered. This video makes a horrible mistake by affirming that the price paid by Christ was the exact price necessary to redeem the elect, this is incorrect when we speak about the price paid by Christ we must affirm the infinite value of the price of Christ's blood sufficient to redeem a thousand worlds, sufficient to redeem an infinite amount of sinners, not just the elect, the price paid suffices to every man and woman ever born since Adam and Even, many more people than the elect are covered by the price paid by Jesus. The Reformed affirm that men are saved because of Christ's satisfaction at the cross, but men perish solely because of unbelief and not any deficiency or exclusion of them in the satisfaction of Christ. Let's make that very clear.

    • @apilkey
      @apilkey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Bill K YOU SAID: “God brings us to life and we are born of his will entirely John 1:13.”
REPLY: Yes amen we are born entirely of God’s will as clearly stated in John 1:13 that you referenced.
No one is arguing that salvation is 100% God, 0% man.
What you’re conflating is freely believing with actually being part of being regenerated or born again.
Faith is not party of the Spiritual operation of God.
Faith happens BEFOREHAND and we have access into God’s Grace BY FAITH.
...According to Romans 5:1,2 we only have peace with God AFTER we’re justified and not before.
And we’re only justified BY FAITH:
      ROMANS 5:1,2
1 Therefore being JUSTIFIED BY FAITH, WE HAVE PEACE WITH GOD THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST:
2 By whom also WE HAVE ACCESS BY FAITH INTO THIS GRACE wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
...So my question would be how can you reconcile being born again and yet still be under God’s condemnation before you believe?
**It’s literally impossible to have peace with God before Christ because we have peace THROUGH Christ; so my question is how do you reconcile being born again but yet still having no peace with God?
...According to John 3:17 we stand condemned until we believe in Christ and not a millisecond before:
      JOHN 3:18
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but WHOEVER DOES NOT BELIEVE is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
... So my question is how can you reconcile being born again and yet still be condemned at the same time?
A common misconception is that people believe faith is somehow part of that operation where in reality it’s not connected at all.
It happens BEFORE the operation not during.
Faith is not part of the operation.
Just like driving yourself to the hospital isn’t part of a physical operation or surgery.
The surgeon doesn’t drive to your house and pick you up and then take you to the hospital to have your surgery as part of the operation itself.
A pilot doesn’t drive to your house and pick you up and then take you to the airport to catch your flight as part of the actual flight itself.
In no way does driving yourself to the hospital or to the airport take any credit away from the surgeon or from the pilot.
You can’t now claim that you helped perform your own surgery because you drive yourself to the hospital.
You can’t now claim that you helped fly the airplane because you drive yourself to the airport.
See how foolish that kind of reasoning sounds!
QUESTION: If someone were to ask you what must they do to be saved what would your response to them be?
If someone asked me I would use straight scripture and tell them the exact same response that Paul and Silas told the jailers when asked the very same question.
**Notice they did NOT ask “What must we do to save ourselves?” but rather what must I do to be saved?
There’s a BIG DIFFERENCE between the two questions.
      ACTS 16:29-31
29 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and Silas,
30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?
31 And they said, BELIEVE on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
The BIBLICAL answer to this question as clearly stated in this verse is simply BELIEVE.
**The Reformer’s answer to this question is, “well actually sorry bro there’s actually nothing you can do you gotta be elected to believe first then God has to effectually call you and then He gives you the faith to believe.”
If it was unconditional the answer would’ve been, “NOTHING.
YOU’VE EITHER BEEN ELECTED OR YOU HAVEN’T.”
      But what was the answer?
      There was a CONDITION.
      What was the condition?
      THEY HAD TO BELIEVE.
The condition was FAITH in Jesus Christ.

My brother you are in error. The bible says that Christ died for sinners (1 Timothy 1:15). How many humans by nature were without sin from the fall in Eden? All have sinned therefore Jesus died for all humans. There is nothing complicated about that.😔 Salvation is offered to all as a choice and all have freewill to accept or reject it. Anything other than that scenario is forced and love does not force itself where it is not wanted because then it won't be love. Too much studying seems to make these guys blinded to simple truths😔🙏📖⏳♨️

Search the scripture, and be an a righteous instrument of Christ and not the unrighteous instrument of Satan to propagate his lies! Satan want to limit the work of our Lord Jesus on the cross.
Those end up in hell not because Jesus did not died for them but because they did not remit their sin due to their unbelief. If you hold to a limited atonement then you cannot make any sense out of this verse which said that the Lord bought these false teachers and false prophets: 2 Peter 2:1. In fact the clearest verse in the Bible which teaches universal atonement is Romans 5:18, "all men" would include elect and non-elect! Only those who would to twist and turn God's Word to their own detriment would interpret the second "all men" to be only the elect. Be a noble berean! Acts 17:11

    • @jacobstravail
      @jacobstravail 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

William Lee you're wrong friend. number one, you should do a study on the word "all", "all" isn't the "all" as we see in the English language. I wish I could go into it further here, but the "all" in many verses are the "all" of His decree and not the entire world of the people. second you're calling God the biggest failure ever, because though he died for all, He was unable to unblind the eyes of people. and the gospel light wasn't powerful enough to save, and man somehow didn't get it- making the Holy Spirit's conviction of no effect (2 cor 4:4), thirdly, God made salvation only POSSIBLE by Jesus' death but didn't come to actually save anyone. fourth, God didn't complete the lambs book of life from the foundation of the world but is slowly filling it in as we decide to come to Christ. Fifth, all the Father gave to Christ will come, but according to your theology, He didn't. it's up to us to turn our dead nature away from our sins and somehow cling to the gospel. and that's just the beginning, I can go on all day. I challenge you to rethink what you claim and think of the implications. don't box God. I thought like you, but then read the word and realized my foolishness. happy Easter!

Recovering Arminian here. I just watched an uplifting, yet humbling 45 minute video of expository preaching in which several scriptures were used to show a doctrine.
I was weeping throughout this video as the Holy Spirit convicted me AND exhorted me.
I KNOW THAT I HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH MY SALVATION!!!! As Paul said I know that “in my flesh dwelleth no good thing.” I was an enemy of God, a child of disobedience and a child of wrath, a non-god seeker walking after the pleasures of this world. Dead in my trespasses and sin. And just like Lazarus all I could provide God with was a corpse and filthy rags. And just like Lazarus I came forth when he raised me.
We’ve been sold a 21st century image of an anemic hippy surfer Jesus who only loves, never judges, stands powerlessly at your heart’s door, knocking and wondering, if you’ll let him come in, hoping you’ll allow him to save you. I’ll remind you that He said ALL authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Him. The King of the Universe doesn’t need your permission to do anything nor your assistance in salvation.
Many believe in man’s free will with conviction, not realizing that God had DETERMINED our election before the mountains were even formed, before the waters covered the deep (Revelation 13:8). I bet Pharaoh would have liked to hear about this free will.
What I say, I say with love, sincerity, conviction, and confidence in my Savior and Lord who even now reigns as King. There are people commenting on this video who are calling Dr Lawson a minister of Satan. I would like to remind everyone that there is one who accuses and we shouldn’t make accusation on a whim. God is not a fan of such.
As previously stated this video spent 45 minutes showing a doctrine that is woven through scripture (OT and NT). The only time I can remember seeing the word “freewill” in scripture was in Exodus (35?) where the people brought offerings to help build the tabernacle. The Bible says that they were stirred by their hearts and spirits. But where does that come from? Philippians 2:13 says that “it is God who works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure.” So suffice to say that it’s God bending our hearts toward Him, which he does with humans all the time (Proverbs 21:1, Exodus 4:21, 1Samuel 10:9, Ezekiel 36:26, Psalm 51:10, Ezekiel 11:19, Romans 2:29).
The Calvinist simply believes what Paul points out in Romans 9, which is that God has authority over the clay. We believe that Jesus save(d)(s) His people from their sins. He resurrects the dead, not the living. God is Lord over salvation. There are guarantees in the Bible that make it impossible to be otherwise.
No one can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him
    (John 6:44, John 6:64-65)
There are people (the sheep, the Elect) whom the Father gives to Jesus (for salvation) [John 6:37]
If anyone comes to Jesus, he or she is never cast out (John 6:37).
If the Father starts this process (ie draws you), IT WILL BE COMPLETED (John 6:38-40, Philippians 1:6).
There are people that are not of Jesus’s sheep (meaning the Father has not given them to the Son). (John 10:24-26).
So then, knowing that the above scriptures are true and cannot contradict God’s Truth anywhere else in the Bible, was the Father actively drawing the religious leaders of Jesus’s day? He couldn’t have been or they would have gotten saved!!!
I also submit to you that according to the above scriptures, if anyone dies outside the Grace of God, then the Father never drew that person.
Brothers and Sisters, we’re called the Elect for a reason.
God bless and keep you all.

I agree partially with Definite Atonement, Limited Atonement, Particular Redemption since Christ truly shed His blood for His elect and showed His love in such a way that only they could grasp. But Jesus did die in a sense for mankind, not saving them but rather showing the price of salvation. Christ loves the world as His creation but truly loves the elect as His children. After giving a brief survey of these doctrines of sovereign grace, I asked for questions from the class. One lady, in particular, was quite troubled. She said, 'This is the most awful thing I've ever heard! You make it sound as if God is intentionally turning away men and women who would be saved, receiving only the elect. I answered her in this vein: 'You misunderstand the situation. You're visualizing that God is standing at the door of heaven, and men are thronging to get in the door, and God is saying to various ones, 'Yes, you may come, but not you, and you, but not you, etc.' The situation is hardly this. Rather, God stands at the door of heaven with His arms outstretched, inviting all to come. Yet all men without exception are running in the opposite direction towards hell as hard as they can go. So God, in election, graciously reaches out and stops this one, and that one, and this one over here, and that one over there, and effectually draws them to Himself by changing their hearts, making them willing to come. Election keeps no one out of heaven who would otherwise have been there, but it keeps a whole multitude of sinners out of hell who otherwise would have been there. Were it not for election, heaven would be an empty place, and hell would be bursting at the seams. That kind of response, grounded as I believe that it is in Scriptural truth, does put a different complexion on things, doesn't it? If you perish in hell, blame yourself, as it is entirely your fault. But if you should make it to heaven, credit God, for that is entirely His work! To Him alone belong all praise and glory, for salvation is all of grace, from start to finish. (Unknown)

    1) The Arminian believes that: The Father, "looking down the tunnel of time" - saved only those who would choose him.
    2) The Arminian believes that: Jesus Christ, however, died for EVERYONE.
    3) The Arminian believes that: The Holy Spirit woos, inclines, nudges only those who have the gospel preached to them.
Therefore, the ones the Father gives to the Son are the least in number. The ones the Spirit nudges are a greater number. And then the Son died for everyone.
Dr. Lawson is correct - "IT FRACTURS THE TRINITY!"

If Regeneration comes before Faith, then that means the only people who are granted salvation are those who *do not* have faith.
Meaning "faith in Christ" is not how one gains access to salvation, but rather "faith in Christ" is the *result* of salvation.
So under this Calvinistic world view, salvation is not by faith in Christ, but instead by Election (an arbitrary choice by God before anyone even existed), making Christ an afterthought in the whole salvation process.

Many Calvinists throughout history do not believe in limited atonemtn!!! Jesus died for the world - That is what the Bible says and that is what the Bible means. We know this completely and totally because 1 John 5:18-19 speaks about all the world and the context leaves no room for a partial part of the world. The "Whole World" means all people on the planet of earth. 2 Pet 2:1 tells us that Jesus BOUGHT those who deny Him meaning he died for everybody. John 3:16 says that God so loves the world and the world simply cannot mean a small minority group - God gave His son... 1 Timothy 2 says that Jesus died as a Ransom for all (Not meaning some of all, but all, and not meaning all types, but just all). The false teaching of limited atonement tries to silence the Word of God or confuse you, but look back at these verses. The negative inference fallacy is used by this pastor. The Bible does NOT say ANYWHERE that Jesus died ONLY for the sheep. No text of the Bible teaches Limited Atonement, but some suggest it only with logical fallacies attached on. There are about a dozen verses that teach Jesus died for everybody and about a dozen that imply that Jesus died for everybody. There are zero verses that teach Jesus died for ONLY the sheep. Did you hear him teach that there are two calls? Well there are also two wills, two desires, two of everything because this doctrine is impossible to maintain with the Bible. You have to invent two calls etc.... I recommend Dr. David Allen's Book - "The extent of the atonement" if you want to learn in depth why Steve Lawson and the people on here are dead wrong about this question. Bless you!!!

If Christ died for ALL sins of ALL the people who ever existed, then wouldn't they be forgiven for the sin of not believing in Christ? This, of course, would lead to Universalism, which is false. There are only three options to what the atonement accomplished. 1) Christ died for all sins of all people (which we just reasoned cannot be) 2) Christ died for all sins of a certain group of people (the elect) 3) Christ died for SOME sins of all people. Since option one was already shown to be heresy and option 3 essentially accomplishes nothing, the only one left is option 2.

Thank you, Dr. Lawson! Listening to this message, I didn't feel that God is a merciless God, sending Christ to die only for the elect. I felt the opposite. God is a merciful, gracious, and good God that He chose me and that He sent His son to die for me. This doctrine strengthens the unity of the Trinity. I can see that God is really wise who planned and executed everything perfectly, without flaw. I also see in this doctrine God's justice to those who rejected Him. At first judgment, one might see this doctrine of Definite Atonement as harsh and unloving but the opposite is true. What is really harsh and unloving is to leave us to our free will who is tainted and marred by sin, which will lead us to destruction and not to God. I fully embrace this doctrine because it is also Biblical and Theologically sound.

When I read that Christ takes away the sin of the world, I interpret that to mean exactly that - not that He takes away the sin of every person in the world, but that the world will one day be a sinless world, in the eschaton - namely, the restoration of God's creation. Also, when Jesus said that if He be lifted up, He would draw all people to Himself, I take that as a reference to the judgment seat of Christ, before which every man must stand, as all authority in heaven and earth has been handed over to Christ. He bought the whole world, one way or another.

Jesus certainly didn’t taste death for people who already are in hell. And I think the verse also means Jesus didn’t taste death for those who are going to hell sometime in the future.
Remember also the Bible’s reading audience are Believers, not unbelievers. Paul’s epistles are written to either believers or to a church family. Unbelievers need to be saved before they can comprehend the scriptures.

This is a very easy question, since he already answered it on his exposition. EVERYONE means all of those whom he came to save and whom were given and promised by the Father to Jesus Christ before time began. EVERYONE does not mean all people without exception (otherwise all people, whether godly or ungodly, would be saved regardless their way of living) but it unarguably means all people without distinction, whether they're jews, gentiles, samaritans, poor, rich, learned, or unlearned. God bless you!

Where does it say in scripture that Christ’s death is what saves us?
You said believers need to be saved before they can comprehend the scriptures.
But what you really mean is that you have to be saved to in order to believe?

    • @apilkey
      @apilkey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Patrice Carmichael Yes He did in fact taste death for every man as the scriptures state.
There’s absolutely nothing God could say to convince these people otherwise.
“All” will never mean “ALL” unless they want it to, unless it fits their systematic.
This means that you don’t even have to show them a scripture verse because it wouldn’t even matter since they’ve already determined in their minds that no matter what the context it absolutely does not really mean “ALL”.
      To the reformer:
What if God DID really mean all?
How should God have worded it differently?
If God really did want to tell us that He died for ALL then how could He possibly ever communicate that to us?
Does your doctrine render it impossible for God to communicate to us that He did in fact die for ALL?
Have you rendered God an ineffective communicator?
Do you have any suggestions as to how God could re-write His word in order to communicate to you that He did in fact die for all?
What words should He have used instead to get His point across?
How many verses do you need to convince you?
      10?
      20?
      30?
What’s the cutoff point where you would believe that He really died for ALL?
      31 verses?
      How about 32?
How many verses do you need to convince you that Christ did in fact die for everyone and that there’s a genuine offer of salvation to ANYONE and EVERYONE who believes?
What would it take to convince you?
If you’ve already determined in your heart that “all” does not really mean “ALL”, then there’s absolutely nothing God could say in His word to convince you.
      100 verses wouldn’t convince you.
      10,000 verses wouldn’t convince you!
If there’s absolutely nothing God could say in His word to clearly tell you that salvation is freely available to ALL who believe then scripture is NOT your authority.
A man-made doctrine is your authority.

    • @apilkey
      @apilkey 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ungi2 You said, “otherwise everyone whether godly or ungodly would be saved.”
You’re falsely assuming that we’re saved by His death, but the Word of God says we’re saved by His LIFE.
A common misunderstanding is that Christ’s death somehow saves us.
If you believe that then your faith is in VAIN.
Is the atonement Sufficient or Efficient?
      Sufficient for what?
      That’s not the question.
If you think the atonement was supposed to secure salvation for some then of course it’s not sufficient or efficient to save.
The atonement was not designed to secure salvation for anyone.
You’ve been deceived into thinking it was.
Although it still did secure the salvation of Abraham and all the OT saints who believed and it was credited to them.
God was not concerned none would be saved because the OT saints already were.
He just has to take care of their sin as they were still waiting in Abraham’s bosom.
Your faith is in vain if you believe Christ’s death saves you.
Scripture is crystal clear Christ’s LIFE saves you:
      1 CORINTHIANS 15:14
14 And if Christ BE NOT RISEN, then is our preaching vain, and YOUR FAITH IS ALSO VAIN.
Christ’s DEATH was not efficient to save anyone.
We are saved by His LIFE which is the saving element.
      ROMANS 5:10
10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, MUCH MORE more, being reconciled, WE SHALL BE SAVED BY HIS LIFE.
**We’re reconciled by His death because we are redeemed or purchased.
We’re SAVED when we’re regenerated which is 100% the work of the Holy Spirit:
      TITUS 3:5
      5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy HE SAVED US, BY THE WASHING OF REGENERATION, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Taking away someone’s sin does not save you.
Some people believe unbelief is the only sin that people pay for which is wrong.
There’s no passage saying we pay for our own sins.
People don’t go to hell because of sin.
They go to hell because they REJECT the only way to heaven which is CHRIST.
It’s our UNBELIEF that condemns is not our sin:
      JOHN 3:18
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD.
