- In this video, I take you on a tour around the house showing only my dad’s plants. He is a collector of encephalartos which are considered cycads, so that’s the content of half of this video. I share some basic knowledge on these prehistoric and endangered plants.

Please let you dad know I really enjoyed watching your video of his plants. My father was a huge orchid collector and curator and was constantly asking me to photograph his blooming orchids. I too wish I paid more attention at the time. I collect more uncommon plants too but with my climate they only benefit from good weather in the summer otherwise they over winter in the house. I reside in Toronto Canada

I recently discovered your channel and really love your videos. My Dad was also a plant collector. He died in July and I am doing my best to take care of the 20 acres he left me. I'm learning a lot thanks to books and youtubers like yourself. I now have hundreds of Cephalocereus senilis (among other things). The old man is gone but the "old man" cacti survive... as well as the 100+ houseplants (eek) I've collected during Covid. Life in the midst of death is so powerful and precious. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us!

This is hilarious to me. My dad went through a crazy cycad obsession in the late 90's early 00's. This stopped when the 'cycad guy' who was illegally importing and selling them on the black market (who knew?) was arrested.
He's more into bromeliads now. Much more appropriate.... and legal

I am originally from Miami, Florida but currently living in Charlotte, NC. This video made realize how much I miss South Florida (Miami) and all the palm trees and tropical plants you can grow down there. Cannot wait to move back.

Oh yeah! Love your dad's blue-chip plants. Really good insight into these species. The dried gray leaves suddenly on 17:10 shows a white foxtail. So pretty.

Your dad was right, his plants are Very cool👍🏻👍🏻. He has an amazing collection of rare cycads, very impressive and beautiful . Those blooming white plants draping over his roof are called firecracker plants ( Russelia equisetiformis ) here in the states due to the profusion of red blooms. I’ve never seen them in white. Very interesting. I loved those beautiful trees in your front yard . I agree with your thoughts of placing epiphytes up in them. Orchid blooms would pop nicely against all the greenery. You are very lucky to have the climate for it👍🏻
I happened upon a white Firecracker plant at Rural King several years ago. Almost passed 😮😮😮 So easy, if it hangs on the ground it will propagate itself.

@@onlyplants Awww, That’s a bit sad. But remember tiny homes won’t give you enough room for your plants. Especially because you like to propagate them. I have an average sized home and it is overflowing with plants. I need more room for more plants!
15:30 we have those plants here, too! We add the leaves to our drinking water. It helps when you have kidney problems like UTI. Also, one time my sis-in-law had bad cramps during her period, my mom added leaves to a mug of warm water and gave it to my sis-in-law..when she woke up from rest, she was already okay which she said was never the case for her before. Amazing herbal plant!

Hi Sean ur dad does have an amazing collection...n I feel every plant is beautiful in it's own way .Plants growing in d wilderness unattended n not cared for....would have lovely foliage but for d scarcity of water....I live in a arid region n there have been times when I wanted to pick up a plant along d roadside n tend it . Maybe sometime later. Have a busy schedule...but m definitely gonna do it n share

14:51 I think it is "Orthosiphon aristatus", we call it "Cat's whisker grass" here in Vietnam
The flower thats looks like little fairy is Kumis kucing (Orthosiphon aristatus), its has medicine properties

That white flowering plant is Misai Kucing. Has health benefit. Dry the leaves & drink like tea.
