    This has got to be one of the best videos on plant care, not only is it is so well-thought of and so informative talking about soil (which many others rarely touch on when they make videos about plants) but it also gives a very good perspective on sustainability that we should all consider in our buying habits! this is really, very cool - ill definitely recommend this video to my friends, lets be honest, it deserves so much more views. also, i think your personality makes it authentic and therefore far more interesting - please do not change anything. well done! i’m totally a subscriber and fan now! cheers

    Seriously, your approach to gardening is exactly like mine- I play it by ear but with the help of stock knowledge, research, and common sense- like putting a layer of moss for added moisture. I also love gardening and mixing media with my bare hands, recycling plastic and glass bottles as rooting vessels, and am very picky with my containers (terra cotta vs plastic). And oh, yes, I also digress. A lot. 😄

    I'm glad you mentioned how unsustainable some peat moss collection is. I live in scotland where our peat bogs are supposed to play a crucial role in water distribution but since they have been decimated when it rains heavily we're experiencing more extreme flooding partly because it runs off land instead of soaking into it because of environmental destruction such as this. This year my house got flooded for the first time and i fear it will only get worse.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its strange that peat moss manufacturers are swearing by sustainability the same way wood loggers are claiming the same. Our natural instinct tells us those things takes thousands of years to form, and we cant put it back there once harvested... a lot of wildlife require them to live.

      Actually tiny bits of horticultural charcoal might work too. Ye might have to break them down to tiny tiny pieces in a bag, with a hammer, which can be a challenge but its doable.
      Just coco peat, perlite, and worm casting makes good potting mix too! Just water accordingly as it retains water for long

    Loved this. Question: can you use cacao shells instead of the bamboo? Some of those mediums are hard to come by in Scandinavia. :D And when can you throw in guano?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wooh Im not sure about cacao shells as I know next to nothing about it. If it drains well, and is somewhat anti microbial like bamboo I think its safe?
      The best bet would be peat and perlite mix… achieving an airy mix that dries a bit fast. You can throw in bit of guano whenever plant is no longer a cutting I guess… I would throw some on the top soil but away from the plants main stems as too much organic matter can rot the stem too. Its advisable to add only a little bit 😀

    What about soils from different countries? What makes each one different?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you refer to soil I assume its conventional soil for gardening? They are usually sand/silt/clay taken from nearby mountains. Some could also be peat based taken from bogs/swamps. Every region has different availabilities and sources, hence it could differ depending on where you live. Do check the ingredient list if you want to learn more.

    Such an informative video on soil. I wonder if there are any thoughts on using pine bark, and fireplace/fire pit wood carbon? I have plenty of fallen pine needles that collect, and dry out in heavy beds underneath the pine trees. I am also interested in using the hardwood carbons in my soil mixes from the fireplace.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pine bark thats horticultural grade is good, but ones you find in the wild may actually contain fungus/bacteria or may rot easily. Unfortunately Ive not heard of hardwood carbons… your questions are worth looking into as they might be sustainable alternatives if they dont have any shortfalls. 😀

  • @RusiaDelDemonio

    Peat moss (sphagnum) is absoloutely not sustainable. It is super slow growing, but more importantly the wetlands with moss naturally store carbon dioxide extremely well and we need them for exactly that reason now more than ever to mitigate climate change. These wetlands with moss are also important ecosystems that have been manually dug out throughout the last century to favour agricultural land in Europe and thus are now quite rare. For example, in my country many speacies of frogs and salamanders are now in danger of extinction largely because of this. Like you are showing us in the video, there are many more sustainable alternatives to peat moss. Let's all be responsible plant parents and care for mother nature as we care for our plants :)

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I avoid peat moss at all costs. Havent purchased any in 2 years 😀 coco peat is a very good alternative so long as we amend it with compost for nutrients. Thanks for the share!

    • @RusiaDelDemonio
      @RusiaDelDemonio 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@onlyplants That is absolutely wonderful! Coco peat seems to be a great alternative, especially in the southern hemisphere. Here in the north I find that we are really lacking alternatives, peat rules the market unquestioned unfortunately :( Also, I know this is an old video, but I want to spread the word about why peat is not sustainable to other viewers because I think more people should be aware.

      I wouldnt. Some tree barks may invite fungus, maybe termites etc. there are certain species of bark that is safe as growing medium

    Thank you so much for this episode! Although most of my houseplants are now in hydroton pebbles (which I chose partly for its sustainability, as it can be reused after sterilization), I’m still so giddy to try the more sustainable forms of soilless soil I can use for the rest. ☺️

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! hydroton pebbles are LECA balls I guess? I have converted some plants to that but this setup still stressed me out haha.

    • @chelseagab888
      @chelseagab888 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      onlyplants oh yeah! It’s essentially LECA. It does stress me out too! I wonder what to do if there’s still nutrient water in the reservoir, and the top LECA balls have dried up. Do you do just leave it alone or mist it?

    OMG, I learned so very much on potting mixes from this video! Mahalo Sean, for explaining in depth about what each ingredients is and what it does for the plant, which is most confusing to me! However, after watching this video, I have a much better understanding of potting soils!

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank youu. I was confused in the beginning too and couldnt find a video that explains it, thats why I set out to do this.

    This was very good , to the point info Sean . Many new hobbyists don’t realize these factors when they acquire new plants and wonder they’re not doing well. I had haworthias inside under good light, but they hadn’t changed any in a year /: I put them outside where they get warm sunlight and rain, and they instantly responded ! They were probably in a dormant state inside my cool dark apartment and the sun just woke them up . Tweaking the growing environment can make Big changes👍

    I'm so glad I found your channel, and especially the soil mixes! I started to use cocopeat/coir and earthworm castings last year, and my houseplants love the change from commercial potting mixes.
    Edit: had problems finding both - I'm in Canada - and substituted cut up grapevines as the twig part.

    Thank you😊💖you explained everything in detail. Now i finally understand the combination. Some youtuber just say the percentage of the stuff they used. Seeing u mix is very helpful. It's like peeking over the teacher's shoulders. Yep i love how you eyeball everything and feel using your hand. Now i think ill have more confidence to grow more variation and i hv to repot my plants as now i know the issues. Cant believe i ddnt discover ur channel sooner. now seeing at my premix soil i guess i need to throw a bunch of stuff in to fix it. Thanks

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its better to understand the function of each ingredients because availability, environment, and watering habits vary from person to person. One persons recipe may not work well with others. So I figured its best to just get the theory down and then everyone can make informed decisions on what to mix. And just have fun with it! Plants are adaptable!

    So we can use the soil mix right away, right? Because usually the regular mix that uses mainly regular soil and compost needs to be fermented for like 2-4 weeks.
