Yeah, you're absolutely right about practicing. In the 70s, there was a huge difference between high quality and low quality guitars. It's not the case anymore. Like many of us, I fell in the trap of wanting a guitar because one of my heroes was playing the same... I ended up spending lots of money on the instruments and not enough on practicing and crafting my art. The thing is... it's much easier and fun to surf on the web looking for the next toy to buy than to spend time and effort, and experience frustration on the instrument...
we didn't know about light gauge strings then either. harmony electrics must have come strung with acoustic strings

however the ibanez gio I got after that...I gave it away a few years ago but it was really not a bad guitar at all.

I love these budget guitars. Anytime I find one with the correct headstock shape for under $100, I buy it, set it up, and put it in the hands of a beginner who needs a solid starter guitar. They’re almost always way better than low end Squiers for less money. Love em.

Starcasters were really below Squires in terms of the Fender line up but some played nice .I had my eye on a beautiful Starcaster that was one of the Most beauitful Sunburst Stats I ve ever seen!

Both my Starcaster bass and guitar were / is better than the recent Squier Afinity. My guitar stays in tune, low action, sound is decent. Maybe I got Lucky… twice!
The original semi-hollow Starcasters are really underrated guitars that deserve a lot more love. If you ever get a chance to try one (be it the Fender reissue, the Squier versions, or an original if you're lucky enough), you might be surprised at how unique they are. I happen to own a Squire classic vibe Starcaster myself, and I love it.
Yep. The original 1970s Starcasters had a five knob control layout, and had extremely special CuNiFe magnetic pole piece Seth Lover Wide Range humbucker pickups he designed for Fender.
The original Fender Starcaster re-issues had completely fake "copies" of these pick ups, just for looks. Fender has more recently re-issued properly-made versions that are not just regular HBs disguised in a big metal cover.
(Edit: for a nice Squier I would also consider boutique pickup versions like Creamery, Fralin, Lollar.)
In 1985 I saw and held a really nice Sunburst Starcaster in a pawnshop, it had amazing playability... then I stupidly went down the street and spent my hard-earned cash on a terrible Matsumoku Japanese Kramer super Strat… Because the Floyd whammy was the new thing. Argh.

i had one, used to feed back on me because of the loose connection and crappy pots. i ended up replacing the jack, cleaned the pots and sold it to a friend for $100 and a Japanese strat with a floyd rose trem. he still has it.
I remember in high school my friends little brother had a Starcaster, and it played really well. But you don't need $2000 or 500$ to sound good. It comes from the emotion you put in to it. The passion is the tone. Ground breaking proof
Guitars don’t sound different from one another the only differences in sound is sc vs humbucker or the tone knob slightly rolled.. all other differences are purely objectively placebo.
Electric guitars* obviously a acoustic guitar is different since things like tonewood do actually exist (electric guitars tonewood never gets into the pickup therefore making it not sound any different)

Yes, the Starcaster is a real thing and the 'Distortion' pedal was a *beast* . A Metal Zone clone, but better.
metal zone is the worst. Ibanez TS8 TS9 are great and can be modded. A STArCASTER NO DOUBT HAS INFERIOR WOOD AND THE NECK MAY TWIST due to the grain as better grain pattern maple is strong. I build Strats and my first one I used what Fender did and it sounds like a Strat from 1954 which was the year I was born. Hot Cakes is a great pedal if you can find one.

Nah, I had one and gave it to my friend, because I couldn't get anything worthwhile out of it. Then, one night playing sound tech for him while he played, I figured it out. I don't think it does anything really great, but it will do *everything* to some degree.
The "Starcaster" Strat was my brother's first guitar! My parents got it for him from Costco!! It came with a small practice amp, also "Starcaster" branded. It later became one of the guitars that made me fall in love with the instrument.

This was my very first guitar. Got it on sale at Best Buy for $40 for Christmas. I was so poor back then and it was my only chance to play. Still have it as a memento to let me know how far I've come. Haven't played it in years. Gonna go to my luthier and give her the works.
Yes, Starcasters are Fender's budget big box store guitars. That doesn't mean it's junk, but it isn't rare. $35.00 is a good deal.
I don't know why they chose the same name as their 1976 Starcaster which is a 335 styled guitar. There is a current Squire version of the original being sold.
Yes, sort of - an offset semi-hollow 335ish body, 5 knobs, bolt on neck and maple fretboard… The swoopy headstock design was unique, and has been imitated by cool brands like Fano.
Nobody but a few guys (like Leo Nocentelli) wanted these odd duck guitars. In 1985, I could've snagged an original mint starcaster for $650. It had an extremely nice neck, low action.
A clean set of pick ups could be worth over $1000 today.
I used to see them in Target and Walmart back in the mid 2000s all the time.
Gibson did the same with Maestro approximately a decade ago. My first guitar was a "Maestro by Gibson singlecut" (LP Jr) Very little about Gibson's Maestro guitars is documented.
I actually went to a pawn shop near me about 3 weeks ago, and I found an Epiphone acoustic that I extremely enjoy playing. There are some really nice hidden gems every once in a while for sure. And with the proper accommodations, something could definitely be brought back to life. Cheers

I am shocked you had never heard of a Starcaster. I remember seeing them in non music stores in a package deal many years back. Basically big box store beginner packages.
I'm shocked go the point of a little incredulous. Even if he had not heard if it, surely his guitar guy had. Starcaster was basically the brand fender used to sell guitars at Wal-Mart and such without sullying the Squire name. As far if playing good, I'd imagine almost anything with adequate pickups could sound decent if it were disassembled, rebuilt and then set up by a skilled luthier. I'm not sure it should still be considered a budget guitar after accounting for all that expense.

My kid has a Starcaster, it came in a box with a crappy little amp.
A quick look on wikipedia ("Starcaster by Fender", not to be confused with the 70s semi-hollow Fender Stracaster) would have sufficed.
My first guitar was a starcaster. Bought it used from my guitar teacher for like $80. Recently redid it entirely with new pickups and hardware, and its still my favorite guitar I have.
I bought that Starcaster with a little amp and bag for my son somewhere around 2003-07 timeframe. Bought it at Toys-R-Us in their electronics dept when we’d usually go there for video games.
When he moved out it became mine. My husband co-promoted the Pat Travers Band one night and PT, Rodney O’Quinn (now bass for Foghat), and Kirk McKim all signed it. Rodney played it and couldn’t get over how much he loved the neck.

Fender made Starcasters speciifically to be sold by department stores - mainly Costco but also Best Buy. The stores wanted "Fenders" not Squiers so they basically slapped the fender name on an Indonesian Squier Strat if you think about it. Definitely no relation to the Starcasters of the 70's which were way cool - used by Leo Nocentelli and the Meters... anybody...

Starcasters are awesome platforms. My brother just picked up an older one. Threw some duncans in it and did some fretwork. Amazing instrument. We call it pinhead larry because of the pointed headstock.
Thats the one I found at a pawnshop a few years ago. The weird headstock sorta threw me. Thought maybe a cheap knock-off of a Fender. I wasnt totally sure at the time. Its not a familar style headstock thats for sure. Nonetheless, plugging it in just to see if it made sound, it sounded good. Got it home, set it up and wow, it has the sound of a vintage strat i swear. you know that expensive kind of tone only Jimi or Stevie Ray would get. Its a keeper
mines black with white pickguard maple neck. the neck seems a tad wider but isnt an issue playing it. i want someone really good to play it and see what they think. (plays okay, sounds great but looks weird with that headstock design. it looks blocky and a before the sculpting happens look.
My first guitar ever was exactly the guitar you’re playing and it was a pleasant surprise seeing you pull that out. It’s one I still pull out today.
Loved the sound in the second position. Had a proper Nashville twang to it. Of course, the player had a lot to do with that. Great find... Your guitar tech did a great setup too.

My first guitar was a black starcaster strat, it came with a gig bag and a little fender deluxe mini. It cost my mom maybe $120 total for the package, i got it for Christmas when I was probably 10 or 11 years old. Still one of the most comfortable necks I ever played, that guitar ended up being a mod platform and it taught me a lot about how guitars are made, I would take it apart and put it back together just cause I was bored. Starcaster strats may not be worth much but I learned on one and I'm happy I did!

Sounded damn good. The setup was probably more than the guitar, but the humbucker in the bridge helps a lot with the sonic palette so to speak.
Was told a long time ago by a guy at Sweetwater, "Your gear is only going to take you so far. Your artistry and practice is what's going to make you stand out"

I’ve got a $35 Squier Bullet Stratocaster I bought at Goodwill, it’s very similar although not as shiny and new as this one. I does play and sound great and it was well worth my money. Nicely done, Tyler.
A Starcaster is originally an offset semi-hollow fender, Squier still makes them. Fender was calling their low-end Strats Starcasters for a time before they started using the Squier name on their low-end models, I don’t know why

I’ve done this several times! First, I love a bargain. Second, I like tinkering and doing set-ups. Third, they make great gifts for kids and grandkids, encouraging them to play maybe. And finally, every once in while, you find one of those rare gems that blow your socks off! I have kept a Squire Tele for myself and I play it often. It came in a genuine fender case that was worth the price and it had a Warmoth neck with it so once I had it all together and tweaked like I wanted it became part of my collection and I ain’t apologizing (lol). A couple of weeks ago I picked up a Epiphone Les-Paul studio in flat blue/grey and black binding that was a sweet player, massaged it a little (it didn’t need much) and gave it to my grandson. He’s been back to my house twice for more instructions and he’s doing pretty well. All good stuff man, good video! 👍

That's was the first electric guitar I ever played! My dad bought it when I was little. I think he bought it in Sam's club of all places. I found it in the attic after I started learning to play. It's definitely not the best guitar but it got me hooked on electrics.
I won a hardly played Starcaster by Fender on a Goodwill online auction . Still had the plastic on the pickguard . It’s made in China . I reamed out the holes and put on Hipshot locking tuners , Tone Rider Alnico II Blues pickups , Guitar Fetish solid shorty brass block bridge w/whammy bar , full size Bourns pots , Switchcraft input jack , Ernie Ball Turbo Slinky’s and a setup . Plays really nice for near nothing .

I absolutely remember seeing these at Wal Mart. I don't remember the price but I believe it was in the $150 range. I would think the Classic Vibe Squires are a step up from this in build quality but as you said, it shows the value of practice and skill as you made it sound good. The pickups absolutely sounded better on your Fender Strat compared to the Starcaster but it is a decent guitar when set up correctly, definitely a good instrument to learn on and definitely worth $35

Bought a white 3 x single pick up starcaster from Costco about 9 years ago. Cost me £50 new. Still play it today. Wonderful guitar - great to see one repped here!
I saw the Strat-shaped Starcaster being sold at Best Buy. It was a beginner's box: guitar, strap, cable, string winder. I think it cost $99. Just goes to show you that with a great professional setup, almost anything can be pretty decent.
My 1st "full-sized" guitar was a Fender Starcaster in Tobacco Sunburst! I bought it brand new for about $150-175 around 2010 or so. I think yours is slightly older because of the painted headstock, mine is natural finish but still has that CBS shape. It was a great 1st guitar for me. My only complaint was with the fret spout that mine had when I first bought it, which was quickly fixed with a dremel haha. Great addition to the arsenal!
Mine is a 2010 with painted headstock, tho. I think they were all over the place with production on these. I used to call mine the cheapest Squier money could buy, but maybe I’ll reconsider that label.
I own a silver burst model, that was my first guitar and it still plays really well.
Love my Starcaster! Went from a real Fender strat to a Starcaster Strat and pretty happy. So much lighter weight to throw around the stage.

I’ve seen them for sale used and they are always inexpensive but $35 is a great deal. I usually see them for $125 or so.
They sell for about £25 in the U.K.
I have one of the Starcaster strats that has the "arrowhead" headstock. My dad kept it around as his "living room guitar." The pots and knobs feel kinda cheap, and if you hold it to the light just right, you can see that the body was made of five pieces of wood, but the neck is well done, it stays in tune, and it plays just as well as my American and Mexican Fenders.

I have three of these things, one still left original, the other two have become parts casters. Excellent mod platform because of the full thickness Alder bodies and decent necks.
THIS IS AWESOME TO SEE! My fiancés brother when i first started seeing her gave me his guitar his mom got him in 2002 when he was a kid, he never played it but suprisingly he kept it all those years, and said i could have it if i wanted to (mind you in 2022)

I have one that one of my brother’s roommates said he found in the dumpster at their apartment complex. He didn’t play and I do so he gave it to me. Kinda sad people will just chunk them. Mine plays fine and stays in tune.
I have one of these Starcasters. Mine is a tobacco sunburst instead of black. It's not great, but it's not bad. And it's really good for learning how to work on guitars, if you're into that. I swapped out the pick guard and pickups, and put locking tuners on it. I also worked on the frets a little to make it more playable, and replaced the jack, which was not working half the time.
I played one of these back in high school at a buddy of mine's house. His dad was in a bunch of jam bands growing up and he played a lot of blues and jazz music. One of the lightest electric guitars I've ever played.

35$ to 250$ is a damn good return if you ever chose to sell it. That said it sounds great so you did well. All the antique and pawn shops near me usually do a ton of research into any guitars they have so there is never really any crazy good deals.

250 is just what people are trying to get for it. He showed listings, not recent sales. You can only truly see accurate values by what people willingly paid within the past 6 months and the conditions of each that was sold. Some people do search them out but more as a nostalgia item or meme to add in their collection. New they were only around 80 to 100 depending on bundle package, and I'd expect used prices to realistically be more around 100 to 150, just because most people willingly buying them mistake them as something better than they actually are. Starcasters aren't even made by Fender, or even by Squier. It's only "licensed by" Fender as a namesake to sell mass production levels in bigger department stores back in the day.

I'm glad this budget guitar is getting some love! They definitely aren't worth a whole lot but are fun beginner instruments! I honestly like that it doesn't say strat on it (i have a gen 1 version with the triangle headstock) and kind of causes a second glance at my few guitars displayed on the wall 😂
Yes, it was from a starter pack (I think from Costco). Bought one for my son about 20 years ago, which I have since co-opted. Made in Indonesia. My headstock is natural and more arrowhead shaped and "Starcaster" is in a similar font as "Fender". I will never play as well as you but I like it for its size, which I think was for the beginner in mind. Out of the box, it was pretty much well set-up, the only issue was loosening electronics which I had a luthier go in and fix minor things a few years ago.
I’ve seen a lot of these for sell over the past 5 years. Could be a fun guitar to mod out
My most expensive guitar is a $1400 Ibanez JS series and it is a sweet, sweet machine. But my favourite guitar is still my Squier Bullat Strat that cost $125, lightly used. It just feels good in my hands, plus it holds tune well. So yeah, I'm definitely on board with finding the right guitar for yourself, not the most expensive guitar.
I got 7 string Ibanez probably around that price range I own some were around 27 guitars

One of these was my first guitar ! It was the silverburst version and came in the little kit with the amp and strap n stuff and I loved it! I gave it away to someone but made specd up recreation with a genuine fender and it just reminds me of those earlier times

Here in the UK they were sold in Costco together with a little practice amp leading up to Christmas in the early 2000s for- I think £99. I did have a noodle on one whilst waiting for the wife to bulk buy socks or something similar…. and it actually wasn’t bad at all. With a decent set up, I’m sure it’s very serviceable. Can’t retire yet though, I’m afraid! 😉

I picked up a 85 Schecter Mercury from a local pawn shop with a Fender hard shell case years ago for $100. If the piece that holds the tremolo bar wasn't broke, it would go for up to $1000 now.
The semi hollow Starcasters are pretty cool guitars. Tom Delonge has been playing a few Custom Shop Starcasters on their recent tour. They have 70s Strat headstocks vs the god awful original Starcaster headstock which looks like a fish flipper.

I got a Free Jay Turser Tele. Replaced the nut, pick ups, pots and 3 way switch and it has become one of my favorite guitars to play.

The Starcasters now are really cool looking guitars. Got a really cool headstock and sort of like a fat offset strat. That model of Starcaster I'm pretty sure was an entry level type instrument akin to Squier. Definitely worth $35 though. Cheap guitars can play great when they're set up well.
I have a Fender Bullet Stat that has the same configuration. Volume, two tones, same pickups. After doing some research on this serial number, I learned a few things. The pickup configuration is called "HSS' wich means Humbucker/Single/Single/. Mine is also what they call a hard tail. Wich is where the HT/HSS' comes from. Sanded some sharp frets and rounded some corners, polished the frets, oiled the fretboard and it will pass the blind test against many far more expensive guitars.

I have a tobacco burst that was given to me for working on a friend of mine's guitar. After a good setup and some fret work, I changed out all of the electronics, pickguard, and put a 3-way fender switch in it with some P-90s, that thing rocks!

I’ve got a second hand Les Paul copy that doesn’t even have a serial number on it, modded the pick ups, getting some Grover machine heads soon and that’s all it’ll need cause the tone is in my heart and soul that is transferred to the guitar through my fingers!! 🤘🏻

i went to one antique store in gruene and found a 2007 squier mini strat. didn’t pick it up since it was beat up and not worth a lot, but this was a steal!

a starcaster stratocaster was my first guitar! my dad got me one from walmart it has a sparkly black finish without a matching headstock and i still have it to this day. it was an amazing guitar to start on!
My first Strat was a Starcaster. It is quite nice. Played it at the Grand Ole Opry.
My very first guitar was a Fender Starcaster. No pick guard and a humbucker in the bridge. I still have it, although all the hardware has been taken off and used on a solo guitars build. That humbucker is actually in the bridge position of my PRS now.
Not sure about the US, but in Canada those Starcasters were sold at Best Buy. They were maybe $200 (CDN) new. I got a used one for $20. It was beat to hell, so I harvested the neck for a Parts build, and it's awesome. Best $20 I ever paid for a rosewood neck.
Ive got one of these in silverburst. Pretty fun guitar, considering it was a gift that someone was gonna throw away because it "didnt work" (the output jack was wired inside out, like bulge out, and was shorting the jack). Its got some suprisingly nice flame to it too. Its somehow both a mod platform and my main guitar at the same time.

I put active pickups in mine, and it's a monster now. 😁😁 Cheap guitars can become fantastic instruments with a little bit of love

I bought a 2004 Squire Affinity Strat at a very good pawn shop for $120 Canadian ($87.62 US) and have never regretted it; as it is my go to guitar for mods, especially a Guitar Fetish brass tremolo block. Best way to learn things like fret rounding, neck resetting, etc.
Ten years ago I went in my local mom/pop music store and they had these. Sub $100, probably the same as an Esquire. I didn't buy one but my opinion of Fender definitely dropped.

I got my starcaster tele for 30 bucks at a pawn shop and its what i learned so much on. I still love it. Its been 5 years and now have a michael kelly tele
