That looks awesome! Where can I get replacement logs for my moms full time home in California? I think the house was a "kit cabin" from Sears built in the 50's or 60's.

how can you prevent the wood from dry rotting? is there like a sealant or something you can coat the wood once finnished?

For an existing structure the most effective way to protect your log home is 1) make sure you have functional rain gutters and down spouts, 2) use a quality surface finish to protect the wood from blown on water. You have to maintain this over years. 3) make sure your grade around your home drains the surface water away from the building. Hopefully your home has wide enough eaves to provide reasonable protection from blowing rain and sun - both factors that deteriorate wood fiber. I am a wood technologist and a structural engineer. It is very difficult to site treat large wood members effectively. Your best approach is maintaining a dry environment for the wood. (FYI - Dry rot is a fungus that lives on wood, but despite its name, it still needs presence of moisture. ) Your environment also has a lot of influence. In places like Colorado, Wyoming or Utah, wood equalizes naturally to a moisture content level dry enough that dry rot is no risk unless the wood is exposed to moisture. On the other hand, if you are in Washington or the UK were the relative humidity is constantly high, your wood may remain at a high enough moisture content that it is a higher risk. Another factor is the species of wood your log structure is built of. Dry rot effects some species but not others. I hope the comments help.

Where do you buy jacks for replacing logs in a wall course? What are they called for a search?

I'm a DIY'er and I'm replacing log rot myself. How are you fastening the logs in place?
Another question, I'm cutting out log rot and I'm to a point where the wood isn't rotted but it's soaked wet all the way through.... can that be dried out or does it need to be replaced?

He did post a reply comment on one ? Which was about maintenance. He mentions money high costs and skills. But offers very minimal assist as in answering questions.
So I will not subscribe and must so thanks anyway.
