That was one of the greatest days in Broncos history. Elway's last regular season game. TD's 2k. Most wins in a single season in franchise history. It's time for this team to get back on top.
I couldn’t agree more. the infuriating thing is that it all started after Griese threw an INT vs. the Jets (I think) and Terrell tore two ligaments in his right knee while making a tackle. He was never the same after that play. Fortunately for Terrell Davis he was a back-to-back Champ, a Super Bowl MVP, an NFL season MVP, still holds the NFL record for most TDs scored in a single postseason, a member of the 2K club, all-time Broncos rushing leader, and was so dominate in his shortened career that he became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. i’m sure we wouldn’t trade any of that to play 3-4 more seasons.
This is what made the Broncos such a great team. They had only lost one home game from 1996 to 1998 and that was against the Jaguars in the 96 divisional game. Other than the Kansas City game where they had to come back in the 4th quarter, the Broncos just crushed everyone and eventually came back against the Jets from 10 points down. The Broncos were really that good at Mile HIgh when he was playing.
What never gets mentioned enough was the outstanding work that Alex Gibbs did as the offensive line coach of this group of O-linemen Denver had. Very good at the point of contact, continued blocking downfield, and just tougher than a two dollar steak as a group. Terrell was awesome, no doubt about it, but Howard Griffith and that line never get enough respect for the total effort shown by them during this magical season by Terrell, in my opinion. Tony Jones, Mark Schlereth, Tom Nalen, Dan Neil, and Harry Swayne along with Griffith just wore opposing defenses down to a nub. Dan Neil is definitely HoF, he was that good over his entire career.

C) ALL of the land that is open in this shot is now filled with houses.

This was clearly a different era. Mike Shanahan was risking Elway who was already not 100% healthy having him play the whole game. Nowadays starters only play one series and then are out the rest of the game and are saved for the playoffs due to risk of injury!

Interesting that after TD reached the 2,000 yard mark the first Bronco teammate to congratulate him was offensive lineman Matt Lepsis. Only a couple years later QB Brian Griese panics in a regular season game, afraid of getting hit throws an interception. TD is going for the tackle when offensive lineman Matt Lepsis falls into TD tearing his ACL ligament and ended his career.
Afraid of getting hit, or afraid of being sacked, losing yardage in the process? If he was afraid of getting hit at least in the general sense, he probably would not play football, especially qback in the pocket. Right? And, I know you're saying that he knew that the faster he got rid of the ball the less chance of getting smacked, at least legally, Brian would be..but you said "panicked", and that entails receivers not open quickly enough and the pass rush in his face with him still holding the ball. The latter would be an attempt to not be tackled and to take a bad loss, no matter how the qb is hit, glancing blow or viciously.
One more thing, ED McCAFFREY is my all-time favorite BRONCO. If it could actually happen, he would jump over two parked cars side by side in the middle of the field to make a catch. I never had any NFL level football talent, but if I played one down in the NFL, I would have played just like EDDIE.. Unfortunately, in the 2001 opening game a MONDAY NIGHTER vs. the NY GIANTS in DENVER, that attitude of CATCH IT NO MATTER WHAT, cost him optimum performance playing health for the rest of his career.
You can't compare these days to the current.... Elway et al got hit left right centre.... no wonder Brady can keep playing until he's 50.... refs and rules mean you can't even breathe on them now.... Elway could have played until he was 60!!!
Broncos were tired by this time - they hadn't been great the prior 4 weeks and despite playing their starters and dominating this one (the total yardage at one point was almost 500-120) they didn't finish this game strong either. But all was well after the first-round playoff bye, I'd say.
I don't know, they did crush Miami in the next game but they struggled at home against the lowly Jets in the AFC championship game. The final score was 23-10 but the game was closer than what the score suggests.

Don't forget their illegal chop blocks and clips they used to do. They were the reason why it was outlawed in the NFL a few years later.
