Great question, i always ran the helping cars engine once they are connected because sometime it will take a while for it to charge the other battery. To be safe you can have the helping car turned off and start it once they are connect. I've never had a bad experience but i can understand the logic. _Randomfix
Thank you, I left my doors open to air the car out after a gas can leaked...one thing leads to another some days! Forgot to turn off the interior light.
I glad you found the video to be helpful. I would recommend changing the dome light to led as it will drain the battery that fast. th-cam.com/video/OH9h0RBrUec/w-d-xo.html
Indeed! On a Toyota hybrid turning on the system doesn't need high (cranking) amperage because the 12v battery doesn't crank the engine but just makes the high voltage hybrid battery go life which then cranks the engine with the electric high voltage motors. I highly doubt that there is more than 100 amps needed to start the Prius so you do not need to put the contact clamps directly to the battery in the trunk. Just leave it the clamps at the front under the hood, worked with a Prius 2 for me. And due to the low amp usage the donor car doesn't even have to run the engine. As a matter of fact a quick googling has revealed that you generally do not need more than 30 amps with an occasional hint of a 60 amp peak, an amount of energy of about 90 amp-seconds, which is a ridiculously tiny amount of energy and power that is needed to start a up a Prius system into "Ready" state and get the engine going. irobin.org/prius/startup/startup.html
I read that you are not supposed to start the other car that you are using to charge the prius battery.....is this true? Will it charge it if you just have it hooked up and don't have the other car started??? Thanks!
Hi Lacey, Yes, the Prius the battery will charge if you don't start the other vehicle. However, I don't recommend doing it that way, The reason why you want the other vehicle on is so the alternator of vehicle running will help revive the Prius's 12-volt battery and not take a chance of depleting the booster vehicle's battery. I've never had a problem jumping a vehicle in this manner over the last 25 years. I hope that helps. _RandomFix
Can you use the prius battery the on the back to jump start another car
2 ปีที่แล้ว
So I'm not sure what I did wrong or different but my key would not work after connecting the jumpers on the front battery as explained here. I could hear the energy going in but nothing happened. I just left the helping car on for like 10 minutes and then I heard the Prius turn on by itself. According to the battery icon inside the Prius the battery was fine. Maybe it was an issue with the key or the ignition?? In the end the key was working fine and so was my Prius so again, I'm not sure why my case was different.

Oh btw. This video was still super helpful. Thanks
Glad to help. You need to load test the battery as it may work fine after it start. This is pretty common during the first cold months. This what I show in this video.th-cam.com/video/Zpe_oOUZsUs/w-d-xo.html
Today I changed my 2009 touring prius passenger mirror and when I was done my prius was dead, did not wanna start. Don't know if battery drained while door was open but car was working fine before and during installation. I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?
Marco, sorry for the late reply, There is nothing really in door that would drain the battery other dome light as they were working on it. One thing to keep in mind is colder weather kills batteries. Did you ever get it figured out?
Thank you for sharing. And yes a jump start pack would be very effective in starting the prius. There are even jump packs without batteries so you don't need to worry about keeping them charged th-cam.com/video/N0wHlv1wyD4/w-d-xo.html
Ken, how's your parking situation? if you parking the vehicle in your home garage then you can leave the hood up and just connect to little connect at the front or in the hatch, please make sure you keep a window open in the garage and also in your car as the battery inside the car. Charging batteries can produce dangerous/explosive gas even with a little battery tender. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions
I followed these instructions this morning and now my battery in the back is making a high-pitched noise that last about five seconds and it’s doing it every two minutes. I called Toyota and they told me do not jump the battery from the back because it’s only a 12 V battery and it’s easy to put too much voltage on it. I will probably have to replace my battery now. They told me to jump it from the front.
Voltage is the same no matter when you connected, as to the amperage, it would be better to connect directly to rest battery then a small port on the front. Thank you sharing and I can see the logic is toyota making this statement.
Thanks for making and posting this video. My. 2013 Prius battery drained (parked after state issued "shelter in place" and let it sit for almost 50 days). I found another video (very limited) and it only showed using the front fuse box connection to jump start. I had read warnings about that approach so I put a trickle charger on for 24 hours and this morning it started without a jump. I had also read about driving the car for 30 minutes to charge up the battery. Since I used the trickle charger overnight I concluded the battery was likely fully charged. The question: even with using an overnight trickle charge would you ALSO recommend a 20-30 minute drive to charge up the battery? Thanks also for showing where to find the battery in back. I had looked back there but did not spot it, I will look again. I will use your strategy if I run into this again. I could not unlock the hatch due to the drained battery, now I realize I could have just used enough juice to be able to unlock the hatch. You gave very good video and audio coverage of this entire process. I will be watching your other videos.
I just had my 2910 Prius jumped last week and my whole audio system, back up camera, blue tooth etc. Are all crashed. AAA CAME and jump started my car from the battery under the hood. Not from the 12 volts in the trunk. Did they surge my system? Do you know of a reset for my audio system? I Took it to the dealer and they said I need a whole new system to the tune of 3200. Please help me car angel!
Susan, I'm so sorry to hear about your 2010 Prius. Anything is a possibility, AAA could of jumped backwards or something else. Did you remembering anything during they jumped it? I'm here to help. _Randomfix
Check all the fuses in the fuse box. Its very simple. Pop the hood, open the fuse box panel, and check all the fuses one by one. Inspect each of them carefully. One of them could be blown. If so, go to any car parts store and buy a replacement fuse. Make sure the fuse number matches if you do replace it. The number means amperage. In other words, how much power until the fuse breaks. Fuses exist to protect car's electrical systems if something goes wrong. It cuts the electricity if there is too much power going through the circuit.
I thought the Prius actually uses the hybrid battery to start the engine. The 12V battery is just to run the 12V systems. So putting the jumper cables on the terminal in the fuse box area would not result in a large current draw.
I don’t understand. It’s perfectly fine to jumpstart the car using the positive terminal in the fuse box at front. I’ve done it at least once a winter. It’s also what the manufacturer instructs. Why would you need to get to the battery at the back?
For what it's worth, my Prius V battery died last night and, when the technician came out to give me a jump, he connected it to the fuse box and engine block in the front and we had no luck. So we popped the trunk, jumped the actual 12V battery in the back, and it fired right up. It's nice to have options.
@@alexmontgomerywx I’ve had the same experience and it’s because the connection to the terminal and to the car’s body wasn’t good. A little wiggling and it usually works.
You are right the 12 volts system just needs to activate the hybrid system and there no real starter. However with that said there is a little concern as those post are limited to 100 amps ( I just went through this on a 2012 Prius c) and Incase the battery is in really had condition you may overload the system. The chances are slim but there is still a chance. And that 100 amp fuse is a pain in the next to change as it’s bolted in and works like a puzzle. th-cam.com/video/NaR5gJdUOyg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HuUOuJ4tpPRJeWKC

Nice vedio,thanks a lot.
Your welcome, glad the video helped.
Good video. Can I assume it is safe to jump a Prius with one of those portable battery jump starters like a BoltPower??
Hi Jim, yes you jump start the prius with a jump pack.
Think I hit the dome light when I got out of my car and my battery is dead. Thanks for the help!
Glad to help and thank you for the feedback
Question: I’ve read that the helping car should not run its engine while charging because you could overeload the 12v. What do you think??
Great question, i always ran the helping cars engine once they are connected because sometime it will take a while for it to charge the other battery. To be safe you can have the helping car turned off and start it once they are connect. I've never had a bad experience but i can understand the logic. _Randomfix
Very helpful, thanks boss!
I appreciate your constructive comments, thank you for the feedback!
Thank you, I left my doors open to air the car out after a gas can leaked...one thing leads to another some days! Forgot to turn off the interior light.
I glad you found the video to be helpful. I would recommend changing the dome light to led as it will drain the battery that fast.

The 12 volt battery is only used to turn on the system the high voltage hybrid battery starts the engine all this information is in the owners manual.

Awesome, man. Thanks so much.
Glad to help!
Had to show this to my stepdad
Marcus, I hope it helped. _Randomfix
What are you doing, stepdad
Thank you for the video !
My pleasure, happy new year's. _Randomfix
Would a battery booster with rechargeable li-ion batteries connected to the under hood positive and negative terminals achieve the same result?
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
Today I changed my 2009 touring prius passenger mirror and when I was done my prius was dead, did not wanna start.
Don't know if battery drained while door was open but car was working fine before and during installation.
I wonder if a cable became loose on door and that is preventing it from turning on which does not make any sense?
Marco, sorry for the late reply, There is nothing really in door that would drain the battery other dome light as they were working on it. One thing to keep in mind is colder weather kills batteries. Did you ever get it figured out?
Thanknu for ur reply. Yes I just jump started the prius battery and it's been fine since then:)
Very helpful. Greatly appreciated

Can I get a jump from a Prius if my battery is dead?
Sure, another Prius can jump you.
I tried to charge the battery with a trickle charger but it’s not working, does that mean that the battery have to be replaced? It’s a 2014
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
Check hybrid system means ? Your battery is dead ?correct I have to get mine charge I can use my system
did you get the issue handled?
No man sadly my battery is toast i need to get a new baterry pack expensive😭😭like 3,000just for the battery
Guys this old method, there's smul device call start jump power bank, size of mobile phone comes with little jump start cable. Cost 20 GBP on ebay.
Thank you for sharing. And yes a jump start pack would be very effective in starting the prius. There are even jump packs without batteries so you don't need to worry about keeping them charged th-cam.com/video/N0wHlv1wyD4/w-d-xo.html
Good job !

How do I attach Battery Tender to Prius to maintain charge while on vacation?
Ken, how's your parking situation? if you parking the vehicle in your home garage then you can leave the hood up and just connect to little connect at the front or in the hatch, please make sure you keep a window open in the garage and also in your car as the battery inside the car. Charging batteries can produce dangerous/explosive gas even with a little battery tender. I hope that helps and let me know if you have any questions
Just jump through fuse box and push start bottom. Open the trunk and bla bla bla bla its not necessary.
thank you for the feedback!

Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
thank you.
thank you for the feedback!
Hey what/how do you mean when you say you were afraid to overload the front battery?
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
I've had the car to 4 shops. They all say the system is fried. I think it surged when they jumped it from the front.
I thought the Prius actually uses the hybrid battery to start the engine. The 12V battery is just to run the 12V systems. So putting the jumper cables on the terminal in the fuse box area would not result in a large current draw.
Your right, it's not suppose too but it is better to caution on the side of error. Thank you sharing
Thank you for sharing, much appreciated
@@alexmontgomerywx I’ve had the same experience and it’s because the connection to the terminal and to the car’s body wasn’t good. A little wiggling and it usually works.
I though that prius is Plug-in hybrid that have electric socket e.g. tesla, that you can use at 150kW DC supercharger. Well, it does not look like.
I think the superchargers are exclusive to Tesla
Do I need to turn on one or both vehicles and when? How do you safely remove the cables?
Yes, leave the boaster car on. Always remove the negative cable last. _Randomfix
Needed this video. Thank you!
thank you for the feedback!
It will not overload if u jump from front
You are right the 12 volts system just needs to activate the hybrid system and there no real starter. However with that said there is a little concern as those post are limited to 100 amps ( I just went through this on a 2012 Prius c) and Incase the battery is in really had condition you may overload the system. The chances are slim but there is still a chance. And that 100 amp fuse is a pain in the next to change as it’s bolted in and works like a puzzle. th-cam.com/video/NaR5gJdUOyg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HuUOuJ4tpPRJeWKC
At what milage do you change transmission fluid?
Crazy King, It all depends on your driving style, I recommend 60k but if you have the money 30k miles would be ideal. It only take about 15 minutes to do it yourself. Let me know if you want to record a video next time I'm changing the transmission fluid. _Randomfix
Thank you for replying. That would be great if you post a transmission fluid change record.
60k
Why don’t you use the terminals in the relay under the hood to jump the car? Other videos do it like that.
Sorry for the late reply! did you find a solution?
Wow. You need a portable battery booster
Its just good to have a working battery.
