    Great video! This helped me immensely! I have a new to me, 1974 Irwin 28 with an Atomic 4. The stuffing box is leaking and needs some work. Seeing you do this helps with my confidence in doing this myself. Thanks a bunch!

    A GOOD TIP IF YOU HAVE TO MUCH WATER COMING IN THE BOAT; Roll up a cigar size with play doh, then roll it with saran rap. Go in the water and stuff it between the shaft and the inlet of the opening. That will slow down the water from coming in the boat.

    Thanks for the instructions for in this water. I have a 1980 Pearson 28 with a 1” shaft. Pretty good dripping white docked. Yanmar and shaft is new about 200 hours. May be able to just tighten gland nut to stop the flow. If not, I’ll try your method. If too much water is coming in for the bilge pump to keep up, l’ll
    try some duck seal rolled up to slow it down. (Borrowing the silly putty idea.)

    Excellent video and well explained. Now that has been 7 years, how did the graphite packing work out? Is it still the same ones?

    You can always just loosen the packing nut just to see how much water comes in. Then tighten it back up and you can then prepare for it. Larger boats = more water comes in. 50 foot boat will be a bit of a gusher.

    I really appreciate you encouraging newby’s like me that I can do this, because it is intimidating at first! Did it end up working well for you when you were all done?

      Tom Beetham No problem. Packing held up well. Just spend the extra money on good packing and it’ll hold up for hundreds of engine hours.

      Thanks! It looks like it will be really hard to reach down there, but I’ll definitely attempt it!

    One question ! What’s is the size of the prop shaft on your atomic 4 ! Thanks. And is it possible to change the stuffing box rubber boot while in the water

    How do you know if the Flax is the wrong size? 1 have a 1" shaft on a '92 Catalina 30. I had to tighten my stuffing box a lot last Spring. I'm guessing that's a sign the Flax needs replacing?

  • @AlanClegg

    Not having looked at my stuffing box yet, where will the drip come from once the packing is changed? Around the threads at the nut, or between the shaft and the nut itself?

    Do you put grease on the packing on no grease?

    So you think its ok if i change out my packing on my 27ft in thw water ?

    • @Meyer0656
      @Meyer0656  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. There’s just not a lot of water that will come in. Unscrew the packing nut and decide from there. If your bilge pump is working, you should be fine.
