  • When you find water in your bilge the first thing to do is "Taste It'.
No you don't have to drink it, just dip your finger in, see if it's fresh or salty.
Salt water often means your stern gland is leaking.
Here is a guide to checking and adjusting it.

I just watched a few other videos on how to tighten a stuffing box, but this was the first one that made sense. Thank you! Now I'm ready to try it myself.

Probably the most useful information I’ll ever find on TH-cam. THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH and greetings from Norway‼️

    Thanks for this!
I've done it so many times before, one would think I would learn... But when the nut gets so tight that I can't get it to move it can get extremely frustrating all contorted into my awful tiny engine room space. Just seeing which direction loosens the nut made all the difference

Fear gone!! Now will follow your excellent instructions and include the hose clamp against the 'key'.
    Thank you

Thank you for an excellent presentation. This is the third video I’ve watched on this subject and the best. Now to go and tighten my stuffing box.

Great video but I have a question... Wouldn't that clip unbalance the shaft assembly ?

Would you know what the service life of the rubber hose is? I have a similar arrangement manufactured by Vetus. Seems like the weak link to me.. any thoughts would be much appreciated..

Thanks for this tutorial. Can I or do I even have to change a packing while the boat is in the water? How much water would come in with no packing at all?
    Thanks again
    Torsten

You will get water in the boat while changing the packing with the boat in the water, but nothing that will sink the boat. I've changed the packing while floating, but always had the new packing cut and ready to put back in once you've taken the old out.

Out of curiosity, but wouldn't the shaft stay in the boat when the propeller comes in contact with the rudder? I worked on boats years ago and have never seen a jubilee clip or hose clamp on the shaft. No disparage to the video, just curiosity. Thanks.

Some boats have offset rudders or twin rudders that are not in line with the prop .
