      thedoggroomer2012 Wow! I was just telling my Mama about you and how your videos help me!! Cool! 😎 I do actually have a question. My Shih tzu has a coat that just mats when I look at it. Lol. Seriously I brush him twice a day with Chris Christian pin brushes.
      Is that furminator or that type of slicker brush easier to get through his fur? It seems like I can't keep it from matting. Thanks for your help! Look forward to more videos. God bless! 😆✌🐕🐶

      Jules Folk What kind of conditioner are you using? It's best to use a conditioner with natural collagens in it for long coated dogs. The pin brushes are good for maintenance, but they aren't really good for detangling. To get the tangles/matted hair out, I would recommend spraying the area down with a diluted conditioner or detangling spray. Then brush the top layers of the tangles with the slicker brush - the harder the bristles, the better. Then follow it up with a metal comb, like a greyhound comb, and gently work the tangled balls out of the coat. This process takes a very long time, especially if the entire coat is tangled. But the great news is that you don't have to do it all in one day. I would work section by section. One rear quarter one day, the other the next and so on. Once an area is all combed out, it will not mat up anymore. Especially if you're using a quality conditioner. The conditioner is more important than the shampoo. I've just recently learned how important conditioning the coat is after Michelle Knowles, CMG taught me. She's my mentor, and she actually teaches a course on the Science of Skin. www.ivsanbernardus.com
      I wouldn't use the fulminator on a Shih Tzu coat. You can, but it's not necessary and there's a risk of damaging the live hairs causing them to fray. Once they're frayed, they tend to tangle up easier. A slicker brush and a metal comb would be the best, and you can use the pin brush for maintenance brushings - or you can use the pin brush to finish each brushing session. Thank you so much for the great question! I'm so happy you asked!

      thedoggroomer2012 Thanks so much! do have the comb. I don't use a conditioner as I'm brushing dry hair. This is like a leave in conditioner?? I was wondering about that because of the tangles.
      Thanks so much for your help. What conditioner do you recommend? ☺

      thedoggroomer2012 I also am keeping him groomed with clippers the best I can! He's a precious rescue baby and isn't really happy about grooming. I do it myself because I don't feel like I could trust anyone with him. Wish I lived closer to you. Lol. 😁 He's a true blessing. I will definitely get some detangle spray and try it. Thanks so much for your help! 😄👍🐕🐶🐾🐾✂👱

    I have a short haired French Bulldog and my grooming kit is not as much as you. Just furminator for short haired, kong zoom groom, flea comb, Chris Christensen ionic boar bristle brush, and a rubber mitten occasionally. He don't need much grooming but I love to watch your videos and your humorous add so much fun to grooming ;) I have the same nail clippers and dremel tool too. Jun! You're awesome! Please give me all your knowledge for what you'd use on a husky blowing their coat? I have the furminator and it's great and everything, but I don't think it's REALLY getting it. I mean, I could make definitely make several sweaters from what I've gotten out, but I feel like it's not getting deep enough to loosen up what wants to come out.
    I just got a yorkie as well. So I'm sure I'll be back.

    Hi again! I have a request for you whenever you get the time.... I've completed my training and have been grooming for almost a month now. I'm pretty comfortable with a lot of the grooming, but I'm not very satisfied when it comes to the face. So, can you do a video specifically on faces? Maybe a mishmash of several breeds? When it comes to Shihtzu's, Lhasas, yorkies, westies, and forming that ark from the jaw to the ear, and including the beard, I find it's looking choppy.

    I have 2 chow chows and would love to know what you would suggest for grooming them and would you recommend working on the mats or how bad does it need to be before shaving? My big boy got wet and ended up with several mats in his mane and hind end. They are inside dogs. If you do recommend shaving what length for what areas would you suggest? Thanks so much!

    love your videos and the nice style you have with the dogs. What's the best way to remove my Shih Tzu's ear hair ? Sometimes the grrom doesn't do a close enough job on clipping and he can easily get an ear infection in the summer. Thanks.

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +marytokyo london When the ear canal gets full of hair, I like to use ear powder to help grip the hairs better and gently pull them out. Anytime I use ear powder, I always like to clean the ears out thoroughly with a good ear cleaner. Leaving the powder in the ears can do damage to the ear canals. I may actually make a video on how to do just that. Thank you so much for the idea, and I really appreciate you watching our video!

    Hi Jun - Love ALL of your videos!!! You have such a great personality and are so willing to share with everyone. All of us lay-people (and probably some of your colleagues) appreciate your graciousness.
    QUESTION: The farm where I work was just given a Maremma Sheepdog. His coat is severely neglected and just keeps getting worse b/c of rain. I'd like to take this on as a project but need some advice on how to get through the mats. Some of the mats are by themselves and can be dealt with using the tools/techniques you've mentioned in other videos. The problem is his back. The mats are so bad that they've matted together to make one big solid rug of matted hair. I've read that you should never to shave a double-coated dog (esp. one who is outdoors), so I'm at a loss as to where to start and with what tool. I'm thinking I should start with a metal hair/mat splitter like you show in this video. Suggestions? What brand should I buy that would give me the most durable blade, etc.? Thanks for your help!!!!

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +recipientsnotnamed Wow, with this particular case I'm going to take a big risk here and answer this question honestly. This is just what I would do, not what I am suggesting you should do. This is just something you could try, but that's all. :-) Ok, I would get warm water in a bucket and mix some really good conditioner like Iv San Bernard conditioners or Envirogroom Oatmeal or Berry Silk conditioner. Then soak the matts in it somehow. If it the carpet of matted hair is along the top of the back and sides, than maybe you can use a cup or sponge to soak the matted hair rug in the warm conditioner. Keep soaking for at least 5 to 10 minutes and try breaking up the mats with your fingers in the meantime - make sure the matted hair clumps are completely saturated in the warm conditioner solution. During the 10 minutes the conditioner is soaking, use a metal comb (like a greyhound comb, or if it's really bad you can use a detangling rake) to comb out the mats. After the 10 minutes, wash completely out and use a quality shampoo, like Envirogroom Skin Therapy or Hypo Remedy, and comb some more for 10 minutes while the shampoo soaks through. The rinse completely out and use the conditioner again to seal up the remaining, healthy hairs. While the conditioner is soaking for another 10 minutes, use a comb to comb through the coat again before rinsing completely out. If you have access to a high velocity air dryer (force dryer), you can use that to blow out the remaining tangled mats - or loosen them up at least. When the dog is dry you can use a dematting rake to go through the coat, then follow up with the metal comb and finish with a slicker brush if you have one. I always like to end with a bristle brush to evenly distribute the oils through the coat. I use a horsehair bristle brush, but I hear a boar's bristle brush works best. You don't necessarily have to buy a mat splitter if you have a pair of scissors. You can use the scissors to slice through the mats. I show examples of all of this in this video: th-cam.com/video/nhJyT5HGVpU/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps :-) Thank you so much for watching, and good luck! Let me know how it goes :-)

      +Arthur Louis Thank you so much! I visited the link you shared, and the scissors look nice. I personally use Aussie Dog shears, but I'm open to try other brands as well. I met with the owners of Chonas Shears, and I'm really looking forward to buying a pair from them. The only thing that made me hesitant is the low prices of the shears on the link you shared. When it comes to grooming tools, I believe you get what you pay for. I bought 2 cheap blending shears because I wanted to pay $60 rather than $200, but they dull so quickly and they don't really cut well either. I know now, through my own experience, that paying more usually pays off in the long run. You know what they say, "Only a rich person can afford a cheap paint job." When the price is so low, there's usually a reason for it - likewise, when the price is high there's also a good reason for it. Thank you so much for your support!

      +Megan Shialabba In my experience, dogs do get better with consistency. If she is allowed to behave badly during the groom, I'm honestly not sure if she'll get better - they usually get worse. I recommend giving her rules, boundaries and limitations, like Cesar Millan teaches, during the groom. This way it becomes more of a structured activity, and even though it may be stressful for her, she will learn that it is something that is good for her. She'll get better and better as she learns that if she cooperates than she will get what she wants - which is for the groom to be over. It's like getting children to brush their teeth and do their chores. Rather than hope she gets better, it's much easier to show her how to be better - in my opinion. Thank you so much for watching - and I sincerely hope this doesn't come across as me talking down to you or anything like that. My intention really is to try to help. :-)

I have seen a groomer spray a gloss product like Show Sheen when the dog is half dry. If you use this type product for a shiny but not oily finish, which one would you recommend? Thanks for making one of these! The back ground music wasn't too bad. I honestly think you didn't need it. I was too focused on what you were saying to even pay attention to the music much. But you did great! I can't never watch one of your videos, and NOT smile. Your a great groomer. Don't get me wrong, I like my groomer (he is a great person). But I wish there was one of you around here. LOL. I have a Standard Poodle, who gets matts even though I got one with the less curly hair. I figured if I found one who would have not tightly curled hair would be easier to brush, but she still gets matts something awful. Especially since I think she is going through coat change. I can't wait until she's done with that! Do you have any videos that focus on poodle grooming? If not, maybe that can be your next project! :) I kind of like her completely shaved down anyways now. She is one of the few poodles who still look good like that, because she has a nicely shaped head. I'll admit I think most poodles are ugly completely shaved down. So I was afraid when she had to be shaved. BUT, she looks good like that! Any-who... Your great! Keep up the awesome work you do! :D

    ok.... so I have a slew of different types of jobs in the 20 years since I turned 16. Nothing was exciting or fun after 3 months or so. 3 years ago I tossed around an idea to turn my garage into a grooming business after I couldn't find a good groomer for my baby. But I didn't. I found a groomer & went to college instead. With 2 years left for BA in Business...I was again looking for a groomer. Well I am done looking. After surfing youtube to learn to groom her myself, I found your videos! I have purchased a ton of professional grooming supplies, a dog bath, & my husband has helped create an area for me to learn. A lot of friends are stepping up with their furry kids & letting me practice (we do not have a school closer than 4 hours away)! I will practice my craft for free until I feel confident to charge, my concentration in Business school is being changed to small business owner, & in 2 years I will begin my mobile dog grooming business!! Slow & steady wins the race right!! Anywho.... your other video (how you became a dog groomer... i laughed so hard when you said you stopped selling the people the car & grilled em about dog grooming.... i work in a sheet metal factory so i can relate to wanting to chase a dream, any dream, that you let go to raise a family)s what inspired me to take a chance on myself! Anywho...I know this is long but if it's ok, I would like to reach out from time to time for advice & now I won't be a stranger!! Lol! My question today is what kind of ear cleaner & eye stain do you use? Before I waste anymore money with products I'm not happy with, I would love some advise. Also, what is the difference in ear powder and the liquid stuff? Sorry so long winded BUT I think it is important that you & your wife (cause as my husband says behind every good husband is the magnificent wife that made him what he is! lol) are helping people change their lives. Whether it's a career chage, or helping their pets live a better life, or encouraging folks to rescue an animal as opposed to buying puppies.... it matters. The footprints you are leaving are lasting impression that ya'lls life's work matters! Thanks!!!!!

      +Laura Prewitt Wow, thank you so much for sharing your story with me. It inspires me to continue doing what I'm doing, and I'm so happy that you have found inspiration in my videos. This is actually the second comment within a month about the ears and what products to use. I'm going to make a video to demonstrate how I do it, and what products I recommend. Thank you so much for taking the time to encourage me, and I wish you all the best in your endeavors. The path may get tough, and there will be setbacks that you were never expecting. But I promise you that if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other, sooner or later you will reach your goals. If you're interested and able to travel to Utah for a weekend, I'm conducting a 3-Day Grooming Workshop that will help you out tremendously. It will be October 24-26 and the details and registration form is on our website: www.k9lifeline.net under the GROOMING tab. I hope to see you there!

      +thedoggroomer2012 Thank you so much!!! Just an update.... I found a grooming school & I was accepted today!! The application process was a bit long but I think in the end it will be worth it! My book work is online & then I will have 4 months interning in a grooming salon a few towns over. I thought it would be a good way to gain more knowledge & I will be able to network with other people in the pet industry!! In the mean time....I groomed my baby & a dear friend of mine let me practice with her dog! It took forever! Lol! But I practice what I am going to do before I actually do it! I learned what is working really well for me & what I need to study more... So exciting! Thanks for your encouragement & for the invitation. I am definitely checking the vacation schedule at work to see if it is open!! Either way....I will keep watching your videos!!

      +Laura Prewitt I'm so proud of you! I hope that doesn't come across as condescending in any way. :-) I used to go to the local rescue shelters and volunteer my grooming services so I could get more practice. It would literally take me all day to do one or two dogs. LOL! But I was more concerned about what I was doing and how I was doing it rather than speed. As long as you focus on doing things properly, speed will eventually come. It's inevitable. Remember, practice makes improvements not perfect. There is no such thing as perfect. Practice makes Improvements, and as long as you are improving your skills each day you'll be an excellent groomer. :-)

      Clarence Thomas Thank you! I love it here - the scenery is so beautiful! We don't have a shop of our own anymore, but I do work at a salon in Tempe called Fields of Fur Cage Free Grooming. It's in a shopping plaza at the corner of McClintock and Warner Rd. I'd love for you to come by and visit me someday! :-) Thanks for watching!

    btw I have oatmeal soap and I'm suppose to be getting some lavender oil pure. how do you suggest I use this

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Rena Rouchon If Bella is suffering from patchy, dry, itchy skin than perhaps Oatmeal soap is not the best option for her. I would suggest something like Aloe or Argan Oil based shampoo, and conditioner. Don't forget the conditioner!! Unless you're using Madra Mor Mud products like their Soothing Mud - actually the Madra Mor Soothing MUD would really help your dog's skin. You can visit their website at www.madramormud.com.
      The reason Oatmeal isn't a great idea for dry, itchy skin is bc Oatmeal draws moisture from the surrounding environment rather than put moisture into it's surrounding environment like Aloe does. This means that rather than put moisture into the skin, it draws moisture out. Aloe would put moisture into the skin rather than absorb it out like the tiny oatmeal particles would. The conditioner is also super important, unless using the Mud, because it adds oils and moisture back into the skin and hair fibers. This protects the skin and hair. If you're going to use shampoo, always follow with a conditioner.

      Queen Happy the #30 blade is good for the paw pads (the #40 is a surgical blade and can easily scrape and cut pads if not really careful) the #40 is good for the comb guards....Jun does it this way as well :)

    I have a great peronese I would like to know how to groom him and cut him down during the hot months I know the Great Pyrenees is have a double coat that's one reason I really want to know this

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      cheryl hubner A high-velocity air blower, like the one I show at the end of the video will be your best friend when grooming a Great Pyrenees. I would recommend first soaking the coat in a good conditioner like Iv San Bernard's Banana Conditioner, or Envirogroom's Berry Conditioner. You can dilute it in a spray bottle and spray the coat down or you can just work it into the coat. Once the coat is wet, I would blow the coat starting from the rear feet and work my way forward. You'll see all the tangled, matted undercoat just split apart and fly away if you have a powerful air blower with a narrow nozzle. Afterwards, I would use the coarse comb and/or the greyhound comb to go through the entire coat. Anywhere that the combs catch I would use either the mat splitter or the de-matting rake depending on how badly the hair is tangled. The de-matting tools do damage to the live hairs as well, but I like to save as much coat as possible rather than just shave the area down. Once the entire coat is combed out, it is time to wash with a good quality shampoo made specifically for dogs. I would recommend Iv San Bernard's Banana Shampoo because it is specifically made for medium/double coated dogs. I also like Envirogroom's Mint Julep shampoo. After washing, it is very important to follow up with a conditioner. Leaving the shampoo and conditioner on the dog for at least 5-10 minutes is also very important because we need to give the product the time it needs to do it's job. After rinsing the conditioner out of the coat you can use the high-velocity to dry the coat. Then you comb out the coat one more time, and boom! You've got a Show Quality Great Pyrenees! Give yourself a ribbon, because this is no easy task. The steps are simple, but they are not easy :-) It is not easy, but it is so rewarding - easy is never rewarding! Thank you so much for the great question about grooming a Great Pyrenees!

    Jun! I love you and I love your videos. But the MUSIC!! Nooooo! It drowns you out. You are enough, I just like concentrating on your demonstrations. You don't need ANY background music. But I am sensitive to sensory perception overload and that's just my opinion....

    Hi there, you mentioned you got the greyhound comb from petedge? I have been trying to find that exact comb for awhile.
    They have a similar one on petedge..but it doesn't have even amount fine teeth and medium teeth.

      Leon Harewood That's so awesome! The head and feet take the most time to get right. Practice makes improvements - not perfect, because there's no such thing as perfect. Practice makes improvements. The best advice I ever got was to always strive for excellence rather than perfection. Excellence is achievable, perfection is not. It's always nice to work with excellent people. It's almost impossible to work with a perfectionist. Hope this helps :-)
