How to Groom a Matted Dog That Bites

  • This little rescue dog came in very matted and in desperate need of a good groom. We made this video to illustrate what happens when you wash a dog before properly brushing and combing out the coat. Remember, always brush out the coat thoroughly before washing your dog. If your dog has a curly/wavy or a long coat, always comb out the tangles throughout the entire coat before washing. Brush more, bathe less!

    This is so much better than what "My Favorite Groomer" did. She had the owners holding their dog in a death grip while she made minimal contact and gave the dog a patchy, hideous shave.

    I commented somewhere else about the dog I fostered & then had to adopt because no one else wanted him. So far I have not seen a dog on U-tube or anywhere else as aggressive as my dog Bailey. He is such a fighter that no one will groom him. We do our best, my daughter's hands have been so bit up we are afraid he would be put down because he is so aggressive. We think he was a puppy mill stud and has spent 12 years in a cage. He is now 13, blind, and afraid of everyone and everything. He had 12 teeth pulled right after we got him but he really knows how to use the ones he has. I want to give him some quality of life while he is still alive. I am 76, on disability and my husband is on hospice. Money is tight so it is a problem getting him groomed. He had never been groomed or had his nails clipped and the nails were growing into his pads. My daughter did not want me to adopt him because of his matted hair and his need for grooming. I just felt someone should do something for him after all HUMANS were the ones who made him what he is. It is not his fault, it is HUMANS fault. I could sure use some advice as to how to help this poor, helpless dog. Thanks, Sandy Bear

    This taught me a lot! Was very calm and persistent and my dog really worked with me. He tried biting a lot but there was also moments where he just let me shave away no biting. I was very calm and didn't get mad (even though I used to and I'd flinch a lot). Me showing my dog his attitude wasn't effecting me, and just kept going, really got him to calm down. It was weird but it worked!

    Good job! Doggie looks so much happier and light. One reason he might have been snippy is that the blades might have been getting hot by the end. Also, if they felt a sting anywhere, they may react more when it comes to the face or underbelly. I had that experience then realized my blades were dull and pinching the skin, poor doggie!

    Thank you SO MUCH Jun. Your videos are terrific and so are you! You have a lovely way with dogs and I really like your whole persona. The main thing I learned from your demo is that my little Shih Tzu mix (a rescue of course) is too tangled and matted for me to try grooming her myself. I'm very good with my hands and have the right tools, but I'm going to have her done by an experienced groomer first and then maybe later try doing some maintenance on her myself. Maybe I'll practice on some stuffed animals first!

    You, Sir, are Number One in the world of grooming. It's important, which you illustrate so well, to realize that you should not take the dog's less than acceptable behavior personally. Remember that and you're half-way home. Demonstrating actual grooming and the reasons why you do what you do are excellent. Now, I have a question. I have a collie, about 14 years old, who has never been groomed properly. I have tried my best on my own, but I am physically limited on what and how much time I can spend on her. I get my grooming tools to work on my other dogs, and she bolts for wherever is the safest place she thinks she can get away from me. Other members of my house refuse to help. She is so matted, I have concluded that the only way to take care of her is to just shave her down like you did this sweet doggie. How do I convince them that this is the most humane way to finally take care of her. I fear that there will be a death in the family (mine) if I just take it upon myself. It's getting warm enough now. How long is it likely to take for her hair to grow back out so that she looks more collieish again. I feel so sorry for her. One more thing. Might it be an easier process if I just take a pair of scissors to about half of her hair and then switch to the electric clippers? Sorry so long. I tend to be a "bit" wordy.

      You really need to get the family on board with caring for this dog.

    • @speedyhoward7577
      @speedyhoward7577 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I was able to get help from them, I wouldn't have reached out here for help. Your suggestion is obvious (not trying to be "smart"). Since this was some five months ago, I'll update on what I ended up doing. First thing was to get her cornered in my bedroom so she couldn't get but so far away from me. She immediately started resisting as she always has. I tried using the electric clippers but they were pretty much useless because the matting went down to her skin. So I started with a pair of scissors enough to get to a point to where the electric scissors would begin to work. I could have made her a bed with all of the hair I got off initially. My older son 33 years old, discovered what I was doing and was livid (that's being nice).so I had to quit and let her go). When the other two found out what I had done so far, I was absolutely in the dog house. One was my other son (31) and my dear sweet husband who has never helped with any issues with anything, no matter what happens to be. No surprise there. After the initial shock, I proceeded to work on her a little at a time. I'm talking a couple of months. After each session, it would take me four or five days sort of recover. really bad back and osteoarthritis. I really should not have even attempted this but this was a severe situation. I have gotten most of her done now. Some on her chest and around her tail and down the backs of her legs. Her hair has grown back enough now that she'll be okay to make it thru the winter. I've gotten her a coat if she needs it. I'll get the rest of her when it warms up again. I'm pretty sure she feels a lot better. I know I do and she sure looks better. The people in my house should have taken me seriously when I started warning them what I was going to do if they didn't help. I've given up on asking them for help. Easier just to do things on my own. By the way they're all 6'2 or 6'3 and would not have hurt them at all to help. I'm 5'1 and continue to get shorter as I age. If you would suggest how I could get help from my bunch, I'd be grateful.😍. I wish you well.

    I'm in dublin, Ireland. I have a little maltese but I'm never happy with the groomers here. I'm not sure what one of them did to my dog but he was very shaken up after one of the visits. Now I groom him myself, I'm after spending a small fortune on grooming equipment, at the moment I'm doing an ok job on the body but I could never do the face cause he's jumpy the moment I go near it with scissors or the clippers and I give up after a few tries. So this video is really helpful.. Thanks so much. If you can do a video on grooming a maltese that would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying the Korean cut on my one. 😊

      linda wong Wow, Ireland! :-) It's so amazing to me that people all over the world have similar issues when it comes to dog grooming. I have the perfect video for you that we made with our little Shih Tzu/Maltese mix named We-Me. th-cam.com/video/wsukEzBE09U/w-d-xo.html, It's called Short Puppy Cut but I've heard it called a Lamb Cut or Teddy Bear Cut. It's a nice trim that is easy to maintain but still cute and fluffy that works on most small breeds. I'm sure your Maltese will rock it! I hope you like the video, and I'm so excited to hear your feedback :-)

      +Nisha D www.petmd.com/dog/grooming/evr_dg_shampoo_for_dogs#. This article explains why it isn't such a good idea to wash our dogs in human shampoo. You also don't want to wash them so much, but brush them more. Brush more, bathe less is my motto. By brushing regularly your dog will stay cleaner and not need as many baths. I hope this information helps :-) Thank you so much for watching!

    Hey Jun, how do you get your clients to come in every 4 to 6 weeks? What do you say, to get them to come that often? Dogs are less anxious and move around less on the table when groomed on a regular basis. But, how do you convince your clients it's necessary to come that often ? thanks

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Cindy Bryant I just try to highlight the benefits, and explain why it is so important to keep their skin and coat healthy. I also explain in detail how they can maintain the coat properly at home if they cannot or will not bring them on a regular basis. That way they know how much work is involved, how important it is, what can happen if they do not do it, and then they will either have to do it at home or bring the dog in more often. They can always just decide not to do it at home themselves and not bring the dog in regularly, but at least they will be burdened with the information ;-) It's not up to us to change or control people. Just share the information for the sake of sharing good information. It's up to them what they decide to do with it. One good thing is that we cannot unlearn something once we learn it. Knowledge is power, and it can also be a burden of responsibility. Thank you so much for the great question, and I really appreciate you watching our video!

    What dog grooming brand and clippers are those?

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tiffany Garcia Andis AG2 - it's the round one, not the square one. Although I do have the square one as a back up (it was my first one), I like the round one much better. By round and square, I'm talking about the housing or the body of the clippers where you would be holding them. I'm also thinking about trying out a cordless one as soon as I'm able to buy it. Maybe Oster or Wahl to see what differences there may be. Thank you for the question!

      thedoggroomer2012 first of all i really enjoy your videos they are GREAT but looking closely at the video i see that the clippers are actually AGC, now i don't know if they equivalent to the AG2. Please let me know. Thank you very much.

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, very good eye Victor Osio! Amazing :-) It was an AGC, not the AG2 - that was my mistake. I actually use the AG2 now, and still have this AGC as my backup clippers. I personally like the AG2 much better than the AGC. It's easier to hold because of the round shaped body rather than the bigger square shaped housing of the older AGC. It also has a faster motor so the cuts are a little smoother. I still use the AGC, but only when I forget my AG2 at home or if it's being repaired :-) Thank you so much for that, Victor!

    U can keep a gentle demeanor and be sensitive to the lil guys feeling and still give him a styled head . uggh get so upset I'm out of here sorry bro I love dogs and the art of improvisational dog styling where the haircut is more to fit the dog based personality, body type , condition of coat exc... Giving him a personalized haircut to fit he's needs doing the most u can to unleash the dogs full potential or closest to it.

      Some of them really do. I had a teacup poodle who after being clipped, bathed and having her nails done and maybe a new collar thought she was a real prima donna and played the part. For two weeks afterward I had to carry her out to pee because she couldn't stand to get her feet dirty. Such a neat freak. :-)

    I know this is an older clip but I just have to ring in on it...EXCELLENT job! I am an animal grooming teacher and tell you that you would be an awesome dog grooming teacher. You have showed such great patience with the animal, explaining over and over the dog does not hold a grudge. So many people out there think they do, so instead of helping the animal to become relaxed and trusting they are creating the opposite, because the animal thinks the human or owner is a weak leader...now I sound like Cesar Milan!!! I commend you on your great service to the animal world Jun! P.S. you should be a grooming teacher and have students watch you in your process!?

    • @Oakleaf700
      @Oakleaf700 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sadly with 'toy' breeds, the owners don't treat the dogs as ''dogs'', more like pampered indulged 'babies'- with no discipline. Very sad. A dog should let his/her owner touch him anywhere, without fuss- saves a lot of bother to train a dog to accept handling, and who will stand quietly at the vets while being examined. Less stressful for everyone...no need for muzzles.

      You sound like a calm focused pack leader and what a great person are you to compliment this groomer on every point you are a wonderfully kind spirit and your love for animals knows no limit you even praise the humans after all they have their shit together they know how to be grateful how to relax how to forgive and forget but they dont allow themselves to be doormats either when they have given a situation time to remedy and the situation still presents a negative vibe or an unpleasant frightening or painful experience our dogs know enough not to go back into that same position.?u6 if only human beings could be so logical and learn to just be happy with what is...deep sigh

    It's such a pleasure to watch you! You're always so optimist and happy, it actually soothes me to watch your videos. I only trim my dog with scissors, but only for 10 minutes at the time... When he stresses, it makes me stressed and I feel sad that he's uncomfortable. I'm too sensitive and I can't control my emotions...
    I had to hug my dog a few time to comfort myself while watching your video! XD
    I wish I lived close so I could bring my dog to you! All I can do is say hi from Canada, Quebec!

      jennibunny Hello from Atlanta, GA! :-) I completely understand what you're going through. It doesn't mean that you're too sensitive or can't control your emotions, but rather that you have such a big caring heart. You feel love for your dog, and sympathetic to his feelings. That makes you someone very special in my mind. Everything you see me do on these videos, I promise you that you can do them too. Most likely much better than I did! I didn't have much experience at the time I made this video, and honestly didn't really know how I was going to get this dog groomed. But I just believed what Cesar Millan teaches, and that is that anything is possible as long as we can believe. Thank you so much for the kind words! Namaste :-)

    I wish we could explain to actual customers that they get red after getting tangled. They try and tell me I cut the dog. SMH! And they wonder, the ones that come in once or twice a year, why I have to shave them! Any thoughts?

    • @JunTheGroomer1
      @JunTheGroomer1  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kandi Cox I just try to explain it to them and give them some examples like using a Biore strip on my nose. Sometimes a lot of junk comes out of my pores and the thing looks like some alien cactus!! When that happens, usually my nostrils are a bit red - especially the face strips when I use it on my forehead! Another example I like to use is when I pull the hairs out of my inner elbow using tweezers (especially after a Cocker Spaniel) I usually get little red bumps where I pulled the tiny dog hairs out. This happens to us and we have thicker skin and only 1 hair per follicle. Dogs have much thinner skin and have 17-22 hairs per follicle. That usually puts things in perspective… but then again you get those we really don't care and they're not really listening anyways. Then I just say, "Awww that sounds awful, I don't know how that could have happened. But it should go away by tomorrow." :-) LOL! What else can you do?
