They got very lucky because there are components already on the plane that could have made that explosion 10 times worse and believe it or not they are things you would not think are deadly things that both stewardesses and passengers have been known to handle no, I am not going to say what those things are it could have been worse the worst thing is some of those components can still be found today on your average airplane, and my protege and I were writing a book together we came across the items in question and decided not to put them in the book still has not give any ideas to any would-be terrorists or want to be idiots.

They're not new to criminal activities or terrorism. Parts of the Philippines are very dangerous where they are always kidnapping foreigners for ransom, especially near the beach and islands areas in the south. It was both luck and miscalculation. As per intelligence and statements say, the bombing was a test run. Yousef was more focused on slipping through airport security because this was the first step.
The lessons learn from the test run would be perfected on the bokjinka operation.
Researching about the planes to be bombed. their specific model and location of the fuel tank.
Adjustments on the time of explosion. Taking account about delays and flight time.
if necessary adjustments to the size of explosion of the bomb.
Last news from Yousef is he is still a jihadist and enjoys the company of a fellow bomber. Richard Reid aka the Shoe Bomber, in Florence prison.

The pilots deserve all the praise in the world and this incident is quite rightly celebrated for not being nearly as bad as it could've been, but I also pray for the poor man who lost his life in this event. Being he sole fatality in events like these always makes it more tragic to me because one family couldn't celebrate the same joy the rest of the passengers' and crews' families could, and I always fear that dying this way is what would make people forget you faster since everyone else will focus on all the positives and the heroics (both understandably and quite rightly. People should look at the bright side in these kinds of events.).

ALL the "lucky coincidences" that fell into place thwarting the total disaster of the bomb causing the exploding of the plane mid-air may well be termed miraculous!! But "unexplainable good coincidences" is another definition of "miracle". Who is to say that combination of the right pilot and crew, the switch of aircraft leading to mistaken placement of the explosive 2 seats ahead of the plane's fuel tank, etc. led to the discovery of Yousef's evil planning? Who then can say that this resulted in no threat to assasinate the Pope as he shortly after flew in, as earlier announced, to visit Cebu? Who can deny Divine Intervention against the plots of evil men?
