Over the past few weeks, it's been obvious that there is a lot of love for iMac...
In this video we put the M3 iMac to a test as I show you my workflow - you’ll get to see my screen as I create the video you’re watching now!
I’ll be using Lightroom, Photoshop and Premiere Pro all at the same time AND screen recording the session too just to see how far we can push 8GB of unified memory. Would it be enough for you...?
AND…we look over my iMac history and try to boot up a 21.5” Intel iMac after 4 or 5 years. You’ll see what happened in real-time as I hit the power button for the first time!
    BTW it took 14mins 40secs to render and 17mins 15secs to export on the M3 iMac and 5mins 35secs & 6mins 34secs on the M1 Max MBP for a 9.3 GB file
We had a great week last week on the channel - because of you! Let’s keep growing!
Subscribing, liking and sharing is TRULY appreciated and goes a long way to helping the channel grow 🙏🏻

I’d go so far as to say that the iMac is the best and most important computer ever made. M series iMacs are stunning, and I’ll keep buying them as my main computer.

My first iMac was the 2009 21/5 inch. Absolutely loved it. Lasted me 9 yrs. Just loved the idea, all wireless, keyboards, mouse & no tower. Everything built into the Screen. Then I moved onto 2017 iMac which I still use today. Going strong

🎉yes, we're still using our late 2009 imac, upgraded RAM in 2019 to keep updates coming. Sadly haven't worked out how to upgrade further from software El Capitan 10.11.6 and given my need to run chrome and Google for work now need to upgrade, potentially to M3 imac with as you suggest upgraded unified memory. Thanks for your assistance😊

Hello David, I’m mighty impressed by this video in many ways it’s a breath of fresh air to see a genuine video about what the M3 iMac 🖥️ can accomplish.
I bought the same iMac as you about 4/ 5 weeks ago the same spec and colour it’s my first iMac I’ve owned. I’m looking at becoming a content creator. Watching this video is a real inspiration so thank you 🙏. The one thing I take from this video more than the capabilities of what the iMac can do is your love for Apple products I spent £1399 on my iMac and now I’m. Looking at buying the MacBook Pro M3 pro chip for my laptop in the next two weeks there is something about Apple that’s sets it apart from the competition.
I do find when I’m working in the office I am having to use windows I absolutely hate it but when I am home using my iMac or my MacBook Air M2 it feels like a warm pair of slippers. Anyways congrats on the video I’ve now subscribed to your channel best of luck and tutorials on what software you use would be great 👍

And when you get the 14" MBP - man you will fly!! Thanks for watching, commenting and taking the time to get involved. Good luck 👊🏻

Thanks for this video. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in considering the mid-tier M3 iMac as a semi-affordable replacement for my 2019 Intel MacBook Pro. Hoping to use it for video and podcast editing as my Intel Mac is struggling too much for a productive workflow. Also congrats on your 3000 sub goal. I subbed on the last video as well and I’m sure you’ll hit your next goal soon! I’m thinking about upgrading unified RAM on the midtier will help until I’m ready to get a new MacBook Pro.

      @DavidLewisTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

hey there - great to have you along for the ride and yeah, passing 3000 subs feels pretty cool I gotta admit 😀
I tried to stress the 8 GB hard and yeah it was pretty maxed out by the end. I would never buy the 8 GB model if it were to be my working Mac - but I thought it would give a great perspective on how capable the chipset is. I have been mighty impressed!
The fact I didn't touch my MBP for this video shows how good M3 is. Try to spec up the memory and honestly, you'll be amazed at what these Macs are capable of...let me know when you finally get yours on your desk 👍🏻

I bought a sony laptop for 10000 RMB many years ago, after 5 or 7 years it became totally unusable. Then I bought Imac in 2016 or 2017 for about 11000 RMB, it now worked perfect , although the macos is Catalina and can not go further. The screen and sound are still very good. I think I can use it for 10 years without problem. If I need a better computer for production purpose I will definitely consider IMAC as my first option

Still using a 2008 iMac, and while I plan to buy a new Mac even this old iMac has a screen that is better than found on most PCs. It's not a "retina" display, the 2008 display being 100PPI, but the colors and contrast back then was better than what many PC displays used.

Funfact, I am watching this video on a Late 2009 21,5" iMac which I have just purchased a few weeks ago used from ebay. I have only paid 37,40€ and it even has a SSD inside. I am running macOS High Sierra as well as Windows 11 Pro on it and I am very surprised how great it still holds up even in 2023. Currently I am making some videos about the machine and do some different tests with it. For me it is my first iMac and I really need to say, that I like the whole "iMac all-in-one concept". I cut the videos about it on it using iMovie on High Sierra and it feels absolutly fine although its age. Very goog video and nice to see someone else who still likes the iMac.

Interesting David, thanks. I’m still wondering about this machine. I work a lot with RAW files from a 45mb camera. It’s just a hobby , but a serious one . I, like you, love the form factor of the iMac - all in one. It’s why I went to IMac in the first place - around 2010/11. I’m on my second one at present. I’m very tempted to spec up the iMac 3 as you mentioned, possibly going for the 1TB SSD. So that I have plenty of headroom going forwards. I work on the belief that software developers increase the capability the software and utilise the better IOS to do that. So in a few years time the increase in the power of these silicone chips gets increasingly less effecient. That’s not to say it won’t work in the future, it will probably slow down. So whilst it’s probably more than I need at present, I am future proofing a bit.

Good video. As to longevity, my late 2013 iMac is still swinging just fine. If I had known I would have got a Retina screen for twice the resolution and an ssd. As it is, it still has a Fusion Drive, but once it's running so what! It stopped being upgradedable at Catalina so I came across Opencore Legacy Patcher, or OCLP for short. This enables Sonoma to run with upgraded graphic drivers. So, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I'm still using my iMac 21.5-inch, 2013 model! Still works well for web surfing, streaming and just playing around. BUT! When I upgraded to my iPhone 12 I turned on Advanced Security and because my iMAC was too old for system updates etc., I was no longer able to to sync my iMac with my iPhone. I had to create a separate Apple ID for my Mac. This has been very frustrating! So last year I decided I would upgrade EVERYTHING Apple in 2024. I now have a new iPad 12.9 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the new iMAC on order! I have been completely assimilated into the Apple Borg! New viewer here!
About twenty years ago, my hobby was to digitise a quite sizeable VHS tape collection onto VCD and later DVD-R. At the time I was using a home built Windows PC (running Windows 2000) with a Pentium 3.2 ghz processor. Capturing the video would be real time and all the improvements to the picture quality would be within the hardware that was playing the VHS. Rendering to Mpeg2 for a one hour video took about five hours!
To have the processing power of my old 21.5 2017 iMac (my first iMac) would have been a dream back then, let alone the M3 iMac I have just replaced it with!

Just watched this and must thank you for your advice. I too have the old 2011 21ins model with the spinning hard drive and yes it still looks good but in all honesty it’s now pretty much obsolete, not because it doesn’t work but because Apple no longer support it which eventually results in the inability to download up to date programmes or connect with more modern devices. The new m3 is obviously a world away from what I am used to. I’ve never seen anything as fast as your demonstration. Mine would have taken an afternoon to achieve the same results if at all! As someone who likes to maximise the usage of any machine I also take on board your comments on buying the highest spec I can afford. Thanks again

I have a 24 inc 2009 IMac and I use it daily for all these years. Only had about 3 times a memory overload witch was fixed with a restart and holding some keys. One time the fans run wild, but I fixed that with some software. One time the screen flashed, but that did not happened again. So apart of the updates that are no longer possible this thing is indestructible.
I now have a dilemma to buy a new IMac or an studio screen with Mac mini. The last is so expensive (3,000 euro)

I recently ordered and awaiting shipment on a new M3 iMac (in green) to replace my 2013 MacBook Air which is still running, but I didn't want to upgrade it past Catalina. My strategy is usually to at least double the memory and storage so I went with 16gb RAM and 1 tb storage. Hoping this will last me as long as the MacBook Air has! Had my first when the Aluminum body was introduced back in 08 ( I think it was ) and that was 24in lasted till 2013 ( video card crapped out )
Then got a 2013 27 in 2013, only to see Apple released the 5k the next year ( punched a few walls over it) This was until 2020
Got a 2015 5k because I found it for a good price and gave my 2013 to my mother, swapped it for SSD and it still works like new )
Now, I just got the M3...works beautifully.
14:20 For sure. I always got my iMac's with the top of everything and, if my previous iMac's lasted as long as they did, I don't see how this M3 isn't going to last at minimum, for 10 years.
I got mine with a 24gig of ram and 2TB SSD ( although for others who see this, get it with less on the machine and get yourself an external SSD with a thunderbolt drive, you will save a good chunk of change and not notice it's an external with how fast it is as David touches on at 15:50 )
I've always liked the iMac, always going to stick with them. Producing music, do some video editing and for what I use it for, its more than enough.

Also, I'm recently retired and joined two photography clubs. We are 99% still photography, no video. I just discovered that I cannot use the latest versions of Lightroom Classic and PS. This is the driving force on wanting to replace my current iMac. I love the new M3 iMac but worried about giving up the 27" screen.
