  • This is a question that's come from many people in many forms since we began homeschooling several years ago. And today I'm excited to share our WHY.
Even though homeschooling has risen in popularity over the past couple of years, it's still not the default option for most families. So I'm sharing my heart about why we've made the decision to home educate our children.

My daughter was one of the students who had to be left behind most notably because of the pace of the lesson plans for phonics in her first grade classroom. State standards says she’s ready for second grade within the public school system, but as her parents we don’t feel like she’s ready for that pace again. So we chose to keep her home for second grade this coming school year and see how it goes. We want her to be able to get up and move around, take breaks as she needs them (this was also an issue at school) and learn in her style and in her time. My daughter loved the experiences in school, like recess and lunchtime, but HATED classroom time. She would avoid some assignments (this note came home on almost all progress and report cards) and get really frustrated with the fast pace that wouldn’t allow her to finish anything. The more we sat and reflected on this most recent school year the more my husband and I realized how beneficial it would be for our daughter emotionally and mentally to not have to deal with the constant negative influences of some of her peers as well. It was something that did have an affect on our daughter. From what we could see it wasn’t detrimental, but nonetheless we’d rather not continue the exposure. We want to preserve her childhood and her innocence.

It's such a huge decision to make, but it sounds like you did it very thoughtfully! I'm praying that your school year goes really well and that this ends up being a wonderful fit for your family!

I love what you said about "wanting to enrich our curriculum" because I've discovered there is so much we can do to enrich the experience for our kids at home than what is feasible in a public school setting. I love adding our composers study, nature study, scripture, art, cooking, culture, read alouds and all the hands on things. I don't see public school as "this big evil thing," but I do see it as a Russian-roulette. You don't know what kind of influences your child is being exposed to, and what kind of treatment they are receiving, which will significantly impact the rest of their lives. This can be a positive or a negative, but I don't want to take those chances with my angels. Being the main influence is a key factor for me homeschooling, while still exposing them to truth and beauty, being available to answer the toughest questions about the world, and raising thoughtful, kind, little learners. It makes me sad when unsupportive people say "oh no, you're with your kids all the time, that sounds like a nightmare." It's quite the opposite actually, it feels like a blessing, and a privilege, and I know it may not be for everyone, but once you've discovered how special being on this homeschool journey actually is, it just surpasses everything else out there.
