As a Wavesport Mutant owner I feel I must defend my decision to continue using this kayak. 1st ... I find it quite spacious and comfortable. Easy to boof, easy to surf , easy to spin at the stern. I am 5'8 and 200lbs . With the thigh extenders at their last setting the seating position fits me and I am able to maneuver this boat well. I have watched your video several times and can only fathom that this day on the river was terrible for you and the Mutant did not keep you from being horribly tense. My guess is OTHER things were happening as you are so over the top in your derision . Okay ... I have spoken my 2 cents. Thank you for your review regardless. As time marches onward there appear less and less people on the rivers and water by-ways that I see any more. At least you are keeping interests in Kayaking. Thanks ...
I used to really enjoy the mutant back in my 165lb days, paddled it down a lot of BC class IV canyons and creeks. Super fun. Mind you, I also loved paddling the XXX down a lot of the stuff it shouldn’t have been on with my weight.

After watching your channel i decided to buy a pyranha sorch. However the guys at the store sold me a wavesport diesel 80 because im a beginner and it seems a solid design. Thanks for watching and yeah the diesel is a classic and just to note I use to work for wavesport kayaks when they were manufactured here in the USA now they are in the UK there was a guy that brought a few in the USA awhile back so the diesel is a great all round design just not many of them out there now days so doing reviews on these older designs is usually like a friend had one so I’m like oh let me borrow that for a weekend or something like that so it’s difficult to do these boats but will keep my eye out for a diesel I have a good story with that design also

Owned one for a while back in the day & it actually tried to kill me a bunch of times. Boy was i glad when i got rid of it! At some point you mention it feels like a playboat and i think you hit the nail right on the head. Bear in mind that boat was designed at a time when playboats were all the rage, modern creekboat design was in its very earliest stages and creekboating itself as a style hadn't really gone mainstream yet. So it makes perfect sense that they took a bunch of ideas from playboats and hybrids (thinking of the Stubby) and tried to blend them into this crazy experimental design which turned out to be a big flop and IMO ended up delaying the onset of half slice creekers by 10 years or more. @@eddyhopperluke no the tape is for grip because it is not good on that carbon and the indexing is almost nonexistent so wanted to add something there for reference and grip and yeah some bright color so could see it in the water if I dropped it.
The Perception Arc and Spark I think were the 2 😂 very difficult to find any of those really old ones and even harder to convince someone to let me try them out
I had an ARC, for something like 9 to 13 yrs, liked it alot, maybe that is the reason I am having issues with new boats, Taught my EX to paddle in it, now I have neither ;)
An easily loaded stern designed to manipulate an otherwise low rocker bow is a decent idea in theory. However, in the case of the Mutant, it is quite clear that the stern grabs so much that the paddler is highly likely to lose complete control of the bow. The paddler could try to shift their weight further forward mid-load, but with such low bow rocker, that would completely defeat the purpose of the stern's design anyway. It would almost be better to just taking advantage of the boat's hull speed and punch the shit out of everything within reason. A little bit more bow rocker would go a long way, though if I were given the task of redesigning the Mutant, I would likely prefer to start from scratch.
Yeah I think it is also but the manufacturer actually listed it as 80-180 but I’m going in record it’s a POS no matter the size of the paddler there’s a reason don’t see the market place full of people looking for these and all the small paddlers that claim they just love them none ever paddle it 😂
@@WadeHarrison There’s a reason why it was discontinued. It was okay but I was on the heavy side for it. I think I ended up getting $100 for it from a very small noob.

They release a boat in Small and Medium, exaggerate the weight ranges on the upper end, and then all the big dudes think its the boat's fault. WaveSport designed a boat that 100% made sense for small paddlers, and then a marketing mistake ruined it. Same thing is happening with current LL boats, and it makes it unpalatable for industry to target small paddlers.
😂 i would normally agree with you but this had nothing to do with marketing where are all the small paddles coming out and saying how great this is over what was available at that time? And why do you never see anyone ever wanting this or using it on the river even at that time. It’s ok to have a dud from time to time. I have heard this same conclusion before well at this weight it’s good boat trust me I have paddled 100s of different kayaks and this is a turd at any weight paddler. Its not like every kayak ever made was perfect and nothing is truly bad. It’s ok to have a bad one and learn from it and move on and that’s exactly what they did..

I would LOVE to see you review a Bliss Stick Scud. Most people dont like them but personally I love them. Now they are a bit older they are starting to get a bit of a cult following.
There’s one floating around out there I know a guy and will try to get in it but that boat actually looks fun it’s like a real creek boat that’s just short not like the mutant
@@WadeHarrison As long as you accept the Scud for what it isnt and accept its downfalls of which there are many its an amazing wee boat. You can actually boof it with your bare hands. And it turns like nothing you have ever experienced in a creek boat.
I only remember seeing Mutants on the river a time or two, it was so ugly nobody would buy it. The Pyranha Ammo was a very popular boat for a year or two, I think they are all planters now. I used a friend's Ammo on the Tuolumne once, I hated that thing.

The transformer had some good ideas poorly executed. Pyranha and Dagger were both experimenting with add on kayak pieces. The Dagger FX by the way is worse than the mutant. The Mutant was around a couple of years before the merger. At least 3 years.
I have not seen the ninja in production form just drawings and prototypes that have been posted i don’t think it actually exist yet so who knows what the production one will look like

My first two boats were the perception dancer and wave sport y. Then the rpm and necky jive both of which I still use.

If you can roll an Ammo, you can roll almost any boat. It also really loved to stay in holes, often hairy side down.
