    Nice walkthrough Wade. Heard lots of good reports of the Phoenix over the last couple of years & nearly pulled the trigger on one except I couldn`t get a used one anywhere & bought a T-Rex instead. From what I`ve gleaned it`s a very capable boat in big water, but I`m sure you`ll tell ( & show! ) us what it`s really like in true fashion hopefully very soon.....can`t wait! Cheers!!

      Thanks for the feedback Edward so you feel the Phoenix is more of a big water boat?
      Also I really like the looks of the Trex wish could get boats like EXO spade and Titans here in USA so I can compare

    I bought this new Phoenix from Dan at Hellbender at your advice and I am glad I did. If you are tall and strong and well conditioned you could make class V to paddle like class IV with this boat. But behold, I tell you a secret - a Wavesport Diesel 95 gallons in 8' 6" would RULE the micro creeking world for intermediate paddlers. With the Phoenix the advanced paddler who consistently planes correctly despite contrary forces will be doing amazing things.

    • @WadeHarrison
      @WadeHarrison  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree if you learn to drive this boat it really opens up and the also agreed the diesel is a classic that so underrated

      @@WadeHarrison Thanks for the reply! I thought it was excellent river runner, I thought the Diesel, Mamba and older burn were kinda around the same design! Keep up the good content and be safe!

    My mate has a Phoenix (I’m in the uk)… so we’ll be doing an unofficial side by side of the Phoenix and 9rIIL

  • @keithpullen1279
    @keithpullen1279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tried one of these when they were first available in the uk. We did not have enough water at the time to relay put it through a proper test. I am interested to see the on water review.

    • @keithpullen1279
      @keithpullen1279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WadeHarrison it was smooth on high crosses, surfed surprisingly well. I found the tail a little catchy initially but that changed when I moved the seat. It did not do anything that one of my other boats does better. I currently paddle a T-Rex, Steeze, Mullet and sometimes I get my old flying squirrel out. Having said that, I would like to get one on a steep creek and see how it performs. I like the look of it, it’s a bit like an old muscle car with the long front end.

    I remember a time when Phoenix was the name of a brand of boat. They made fiberglass boats. I had a high volume big water boat made by them. They are a thing of the past now though. I guess they couldn't evolve from fiberglass to plastic and when the way of the dinosaur. I remember the Phoenix folks arguing with the Perception folks and saying that plastic is trashy and won't ever replace fiberglass. I guess there's Phoenix company in New Zealand which makes nice touring and sea kayaks, but they're not the same folks as far as I am aware. The first plastic boats were kinda trashy. It wasn't until someone figured out that bulkheads and pillars were good for the strength of the boat that they really began to outstrip the fiberglass boats. The fiberglass boats had a tendency to crack, and you had to take a crap-ton of duct tape along to field patch leaks. If you were scraping on rocks a lot (pretty much common place these days) you were sure to have to patch the boat after the trip, and fiberglass patches were sure to effect the performance of the boat. The early plastic boats were also made of plastic which was thinner than the ones these days are. The boats these days are light years better than what we had to play with in the 1950's and '60's. Just light years better. Well... maybe Walmart kayaks come close to the feel of the bad old days. Get a Walmart kayak and try running Gorilla on the Green for an idea of what it would feel like to run class II in an early plastic boat. That's about how completely you could destroy the boat in even the minor waves of class II. Even a Walmart kayak will make it through class II. A first gen plastic boat wouldn't though.

    Dang, I'm a sucker for wavesport, but I always ignored this boat knowing I probably wouldn't see one in the US. I'm not sure this will be the hull design for me, but the weight range nails it for a medium-large guy--big deal in my book. Same reason I've been eyeing a Phantom. I feel like a tweener on the Scorch and Code at 190.
