You seriously just made my day...I have been looking for instructions on using this exact type of drain snake (found in Dad's garage!), and now, I KNOW!!!! Thank you!!!
Before unscrewing pipes, I would try a garden hose shoved in the drain with a rag around it the opening to seal it. I've used that a lot to clear drains of lint and hair. I rigged up a short piece of hose with a valve to attach to the main hose, so I can turn on the water outside and then start the flow at the sink when ready. Also, you can buy a lint filter that looks like a white plastic ribbed cone that sits in the drain hole. It catches all the lint and is easily cleaned with a few swipes of the finger. Its tall enough so that if it gets clogged, water will still drain at the top. This works better than little filter screens that go on the end of the discharge pipe.
For small drains you can suck a clog back up a drain with a wet vac. This works wall on a lot of drains, make sure you cover any overflow vents to assure full vacuum. Hair clogs can be pulled back up a drain with a hooked peace of wire. On larger drain pipes a garden hose set on high spray can be inserted into and down a clean out access or roof vent. This will wash out a clog. If a rag is used to close off the entrance around the hose the pipe will pressurize pushing a clog out. Care must be taken not to over flow a toilet or flour drain using this trick.
Okay. I just got all 50ft (well maybe 45ft) in the pipe. I'll edit this post if and when I can get that cable back out. [EDIT] It came out fine and the clog is gone. Thanks for giving me the confidence to do it. I first tried a 25ft drum auger. It either could not reach the clog or just pushed further down. The 50ft took care of it.
Thank you very much for recording and sharing your experience for the public good while going through a difficult repair work. Excellent health and safety tips as well !!!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU! You've saved a single girl during the pandemic!!!! Although I have black goo all over myself and my under the sink cabinet it drains perfect!!!!!
I am a drain cleaning specialist. I would have taken off the rubber fitting about a foot passed that 90 degree turn and used a bigger machine due to the better access. Haha
The tote lid makes a nice cshallow catch basin as is using a trash bag especially if you are snaking a drain in a finished kitchen or bathroom as that organic sludge is a greasy nasty stuff to try to clean up. I highly recommend using a heavier 50 gallon drum liner as it is thicker material and has a larger capacity than a typical kitchen trash bag and they can be very handy to have on hand.
Would it have been easier to have disconnected the mechanical splice there just before the main line and snake it from that point...The way you have shown you have to deal with the 90 degree turn where you inserted your snake and run the risk of damaging the seat faces on the trap...Just an after thought....
Sodium hypoclorite is not bad for the environment. It just gets extremely diluted and most of it is broken down by buffers in the sewers. Tap water is full of chlorine and fluoride anyway.

Iv'e already been to Emergency a few weeks ago for being a dumbass and plunging after pouring down chemicals and not wearing protective eye wear...Eyes and acid don't mix wouldn't you know...I'll try not to gas myself this time too.
I hope you're going to be OK. I always push protective eyewear. Had a lot of stuff in my eyes over the years. Sawdust. Wood chips. Gasoline. Boiling antifreeze. Not to "one up" you, rather to reassure that eyes recover from some traumas (but not all) Good luck!
I've lived in apartments all my life and when I saw the tub in my basement filled with water and suds, I freaked out! It's not clogged but I've never seen anything like that before. I'm glad it's supposed to do that.
I actually buy this INCREDIBLY POTENT STUFF. I work at a Surface Treatment plant as a Metalizer using Zinc. The residue is likr Zinc Oxide Powder---and I think it clogs the drains at home. So, I use SULFURIC ACID DRAIN OPENER. I coat ALL the chrome in the tub with Vicks Vaporub---and slowly pour the acid into the empty drain. You can buy it at WalMarts. It hisses, bubbles, farts and boils the hell out of ANYTHING---even rags.
I have to ask why would you not undo the fern co and take the threaded half the trap off? Why even take a chance of running the auger line on the threads?
LOL I thought that near the end when he removed the mask and his glasses were cockeyed surprised to see someone else pointing it out. high five to you as a fellow boxing fan
hey I need some advice from a fellow Canadian please. So a month Ago I Accidentally flushed a rag down my Toilet. luckily the toilet still flushes fine. My Issue and worry however is that when I do Laundry the Toilet and bathtub make noise and pressure bubbles up them. I have read that The main Waste line is probably partially clogged or maybe the rag is stuck in the toilet Trap vent Area. Should I try and use a long Auger Snake down the Toilet/Waste line to clear the blockage?? I'm scared of doing damage or it getting stuck. BtW my Lines are PvC. thankyou.
Using a net (comes in a pack of 3 at your hardware store) on the end of washing machine drain hose to catch lint will help prevent the drain from getting clogged.
I used some stuff called one shot drain cleaner, I poured it in and got a Krakatoa of the stuff coming back out. My whole flat stinks of chlorine now, and I can't go into the bathroom. The plug was steaming.. I've had to open all my windows and put the fan through the bathroom door, and it's winter here! :(
Hey brother ! Please help. The kitchen sink won’t drain and it’s backing up the downstairs bathroom shower. When the kitchen sink is full it comes up from the shower. And when I pour water down the shower drain it backs up. But I’m pretty sure the drain is clogged upstairs in the sink. Can you help me figure this out. I’m going to buy a snake in a few days. Thank you
Jeff - My guess is the clog is further down the line past the shower. Maybe rent a power snake instead of buying a spring snake as they'll cost about the same and the spring will go 50 feet at most. Power snake will go all the way to the street. Good luck!
@@repairs101 brother thank you so much. That’s exactly what I was thinking. You probably just saved me a bunch of money that I didn’t have. Thank you so much for responding to this older video! I owe you one man!! Take care brother. I’ll let you know what happens
@@repairs101 I do have a septic tank. And it’s not very far from the shower. Maybe 20 feet or less. I should probably be careful not to get it down there right ?!
Are you sure the tank isn't full? I'm no expert but heavy rains maybe a factor? Yes definitely keep your snake out of the tank. Since its so short a run a spring snake should be all you need (assuming not full).
I'm having major problems with my washer. After having the plumber come by with his snake and costing $600 dollars a few times, it's still not draining. I brought the drain snake, and it'll clog up again in a week. Any suggestions?
Try a (temporary) strainer to determine if the clogging is from the wash water itself (lots of mud and or lint?) or is in the sewer? Your high priced plumber should have run a camera snake the 1st or 2nd time to see what and where the problem is - could be the sewers, not your home. Any neighbours have the same problem? Cities and old development sewers are prone to "Fatbergs" .
Yes but I recommend a toilet snake instead of the drain snake I used in this video. Good luck! www.walmart.com/ip/Plumb-Craft-Titan-Light-Duty-Toilet-Auger/15388948
watch it from 5:30 to about 7:00...the way you get around the elbow is to twist the cable so the end of the cable can turn the corner...you twist the cable using the little pipe with a wing screw on it that is slid up over the cable...you tighten down the wing screw and twist the pipe while pushing more cable into the drain. then when you feel it turn the corner...you stop twisting, lossen the wing screw and slide more cable through the little handle pipe.
+caddymech Is that the same technique even for a double elbow??..Iv'e got a pipe snake on order and i have a feeling i'll have that sort of joint to have to negotiate around..Both my kitchen and bathroom sinks are very slow draining and think they both connect to a double elbow.
I've got a sink and a bathtub that won't drain , just tried to snake the sink took off the PVC piping that wasn't glued , and just cant get the snake to get around the last elbow joints , it's been 4 years since the landlord was aware of the clogged drains and refuses to pay a plumber and the sink smells like sewage
Sewage smell is a hazard to your health. Plug the sink and avoid the gases. No smoking no open flame near the sink. Call city hall or a residential tennant's hotline and ask if he can be ordered to fix it without jeopardizing your tennancy.
There really isn't a lot I can think of (not being able to see what's up) other than maybe you need a power snake because of the way your sewage is plumbed..
The best way to get around turns is to lock the handle and crank with steady pressure. It's quite tiresome with the crude style of snake used in the video.
Soap and hair are the most common issues in the tub. If the tub drains slowly wait for it to empty then pour a kettle of boiling water in the drain. Often it will soften up the soap enough to free the clog. Good luck!

Some folks could save a lot of $ if they put a screen over the drain to catching the junk before it gets stuck in the pipes.

No. Water supply and sewage are unrelated.Just don't open any taps until you are ready to rinse the pipes through.

I'd pour the Drano in anyway after snaking and BEFORE running water back down the pipe.
I Know it's an old video, but wouldn't it be faster and better to use a drill at the end? You can always use the old belt trick to loosen stuff....
