This is the first in a "series" of videos I have filmed (with some still to film) showing the restoration, draught proofing and double glazing of these Sash Windows. I will be repairing the cills, scribing in new timber where necessary, refurbishing the staff beads, and pulleys, replacing the parting beads with Accoya ones, making new Accoya double glazed sashes and rebalancing the weights.
Part 2 is setting out the new sashes and detailing a cross sectional drawing ready for making them.

I restore windows and doors on listed buildings, I hardly ever need to remake new sashes, I’d fit new parting beads and staff beads with brush seals, completely strip the sash down to the bare wood, then star dowel all joints after injecting glue in, to strengthen them. Replace or repair any rotted timbers. Rebate the sashes deeper to allow new 6.4 laminated glass, which improves heat and sound efficiency, preserve all bare timbers, spray paint primers, undercoats and top coats, fit brush seals around sashes, new pulleys, rope and weights, wax all painted wood and polish glass. 🎉

Haha Brilliant! I hope i get the videos done for you in time. I've filmed the making of the sashes but no restoration parts yet. i was going to wait for some better weather!
Oh and i made a mistake, thanks to your comment I've spotted it. I was waffling on about Ogee, i have no idea why, the moulding is an Ovolo mould.
Great video⭐️I live in a Victorian from 1901 in Northern California and I have pretty large single pane sash windows. Really need to start restoring them before they get worse and this is VERY helpful👍cheers & thanks for the knowledge

Thanks Andrew. They seem to be hot topic on forums and to most people when you talk joinery, Sash windows seem to be the topic. The repairing i quite enjoy a small amount of. I wouldn't want to do it full time.

excited to scroll through this series. I have read in joiner books on doors and windows that the glazing should be installed and beaded from the outside. that way if water gets down the glass, it is able to escape from the bottom of the bead rather than the rebate where it will just sit and rot. Which makes sense. But then, I wondered about burglars being able to just remove the bead and pop the glass out. But in reality, they are not going to take the time to do that. They will just smash and grab. It seems though that most of the timber window companies in the uk do the rebate on the outside. Love your videos. I am just someone who is fascinated by traditional methods of making doors and windows and am fed up with seeing upvc every where!! Thank you
thanks Lee, you can do both glazing directions and there are good arguments for both. Removing glass thats been glued in is not easy or quick so burglars wont be using that method i assure you! haha

Excellent thorough video, thanks! Lots of terminology in there to keep track of. If you find the rot extends into the sills and jambs far enough, you'd just replace the whole unit I suppose? There must be a point where repairing in situ is more than a whole swap-out.
Thanks Buddy, I have repaired sash bay windows before that i have made a complete new cill for and cut the box frame off nearly half way up, and rebuilt from there, staggering the joints to keep the strength etc. it took around 2 days to do so alot more economical than building a new Window. some windows are easier to keep due to features on them, ornate mouldings around the top of the bay window would have been thousands to replace. obviously a standard'ish box sash that was rotten in the head or most of the way through is probably best to replace the whole thing, but its a style of window that tends to only rot the cills as they are usually sat in a reveal on the brickwork so the majority of the box stays sound, hence they are commonly repaired. If youe the money they always look better with a new replica put in there though!
@@BradshawJoinery Good point on the recessed windows, that must make a big difference. Over here we see a lot of windows further towards the outside of the building and less protected. I've been looking foreward to this series for a while, thanks for doing it.

Is there a reason for putting the double glazing rebate on the interior ?
Its not too bad of a job. if you can get a few lenghts of each profile machined up and at hand ready for installing it makes life real easy. i will repair one soon hopefully!!
Great video (of many) - many thanks. I am in the process of restoring some sash windows on an old farmhouse I have just bought. One question I had was if you were modifying these with draught strips why do you also need to put in double glazing. I really like the look of the old glass...and its already there. Why not keep it? Keep up the good work!
NO Need. Double glazing is not only warmer its alot cleaner. no condensation or blackening of the inside of the window at glass/timber points No need for thick units, just a 6mm cavity is plenty on restoration work
Glazing and draft strips address two completely separate issues. Glazing improves the thermal performance by reducing heat loss/gain due to convection. The draft strips prevent air leaks at joints.
How is the side of the box frame style fixed into the cill? As it’s normally not that thick. Like the pulley style where it meets the cill?
It sits in a housing. The depth of the housing is so the pulley stil can be cut square and meet the front of the box. Can either screw in place from underneath or wedge against the end of the cill. (Glue and screw imo)
Hi, could I ask which spindle cutter you use when making the sliding sash sill on new box frame windows please?

I use a large rebate cutter and tilt the spindle over to 9 degrees but if you don't have that facility you'll need a 9 degree cill block.

If it's just a few cills you can get profile knives in 9 degree. 👍
Where does someone find a quality carpenter like yourself, and what should they look for? Any tips on avoiding cowboys?
Id suggest someone who is active on instagram for a decent amount of time would be a good start, word of mouth and seeing their work first hand is ideal. and probably how most individual tradesmen will be getting their work. Search loackl joinery shops, go and visit, look for a small establishment making bespoke items, and ask if they do the type of work and or reccomend someone! you will probably have to wait for the right person!

@@BradshawJoinery Exactly correct. Anyone who can do this properly will be in high demand, and have a long wait list. If they can start next week, they are a hack. And ask to see their portfolio! Any tradesman worth his salt will have some portfolio of some kind of their work. Sure, an Instagram account would be nice, but not every tradesman is as tech savvy as Mr. Bradshaw.
How do I find a professional tradesman to do this to my bay windows? I can only see double glazing companies that suggest removing sash windows boxes and replacing them
with pvc. Thank you
I would look for a joinery shop advert or business locally and ask by word of mouth, maybe properties nearby with refurbished sash windows may be worth a knock on the door for a reccomendation. Where are you?

yep, not ideal!!! its not the end of the world to drill it through the wall next to it sometimes but yes its a pain, especially if it travells around the room internally,
