Yuri only needs a good friend because she seems slightly shut in to her own world. And Monika.... needed to not be president and fuck everything up. The protagonist? He's honestly the least bit affected by everything. Hell, he takes it all with stride really and towards the end, just has no reaction to anything that happens, almost like the protagonist is completely irrelevant when towards the end it's more about you and your reactions and relations to these girls and the unfortunate mess that befalls them at the hands of.... well.... Just Monika.
PK Scratch the protagonist had to deal with all of these things one after the next, and he’s just a vessel for the player to see through. We see how he feels when we see the scene of Sayori hanging around and how he feels. He’s forced to endure all of this but what we see is influenced by the game, he is the only one we can relate to in the situation because we see it from his perspective. He lost all of his friends because they loved him, thinking of what he could’ve done to stop it. That’s almost as worse as the problems the girls in the club had to endure, to watch and not being able to help and to have that plague your mind while being forced to pick another girl to court, to be forced to make it seem like your friends were never there once they were gone after. The protagonist was just a normal dude, Monika admits that she loves the player and not the avatar. Which means the protagonist was just a BYSTANDER and makes his whole situation even WORSE

I really don't get why everyone constantly makes Yuri out to be some kind of psychotic serial killer. Seriously, the only time she ever uses the knife to cause legitimate harm is on herself. It'd be like if people made Sayori out to be a killer that constantly hangs anyone she sees, or if people made Natsuki out as a neck-snapping cannibalistic psychopath. It makes no sense with what is established in the basic lore. Plus, Yuri only kills herself due to Monika toying with the script, trying to make her as undesirable as possible, as admitted in the "Just Monika" phase of the game. Liking knives doesn't equal loving murder, she even admits that she likes knives due to their beauty, along with the underlying feeling of danger, which (quite frankly) is fairly normal. A part of the game's message is not to judge others for what they enjoy, which was made as blatant as possible by Natsuki (in general), yet the fandom seems to have taken that and twisted it into the exact opposite, judging Yuri as coldly as possible based on a few lines of dialogue.
