@2:56 Its because the sensors are placed where your back ear lobe are nearest. If the headphones are put on backwards, the sensor doesn't detect the ear as its where the hole (pit/preauricular) is at. so it doesn't play.
You've nailed this review. I'm in the Apple eco-system, but happy to be critical when Apple don't hit the mark (I'm thinking about the Airpods Pro 1st gen here, which were crap). But the Airpods Max headphones are exceptional with noise cancelling and transparency mode. I'm wearing these 10 hours a day, six days a week for both work (meetings and music) and entertainment (TH-cam/Netflix/audio). These Airpods Max are heavy compared to other headphones, but extremely comfortable. The transparency mode has worked so well that Apple are amping this up with Airpods Pro 2nd gen and the new Apple Vision Pro (transparency with both audio and vision). Expensive, but highly recommended. Finally, the microphones are awesome for meetings when you're speaking and the baby is crying in the background. I've given up asking people if they can here whatever loud noises are happening in the office or home, as they just can't hear it. Here's the thing... in transparency mode... you can monitor the kids in the background whilst on a meeting.... but the meeting participants cannot hear anything but your voice when you're speaking. Such a great product.
Ordered a pair of these to arrive today as I just wasn’t getting on with the AirPods Pro 2 and in-ear audio. Came across your review and what a fantastic review it is! Covered all the main (important) points, clear and obviously experienced in audio but didn’t come across as egotistical about it! Great review indeed, have a sub and I look forward to future content.
How were the headphones for you? I think my pro 2 don’t make it as well for me, wanna return them. These ones cost a lot, but maybe they are worth it ?
@@alexandrugabrielburea6632 they are fantastic. The sound quality, build and noise isolation/cancelling is great. Are they worth the money? I think they are great, but they are perhaps a little more than a comfortable price. Depends how much you want the best
You made a very valid point with 2/3 of the price being for wireless and noise control technology. I think this applies to pretty much all bluetooth ANC headphones, with only a few exceptions having a better or even worse sound-to-price ratio.
great review, thank you. and yeah as a 30 year hollywood sound mixer/producer myself I LOVE these headphones but only for 'casual use' when I'm walking my pups and that's about it. I can walk around the neighborhood with headphones I can count on sounding good enough for enjoying the outside and staying within the apple 'ecosystem'. I own the Airpods Pro 2nd gen too and what an improvement as the sound vs 1st gen is amazing. Definitely recommend both for casual use. Professional or advanced/skilled use for careers in the music business, no way. ;)

@@ThereIsOnlyOneRandom all the others Android codecs are all compressed. The AirPods Max is superior to the XM5 and bose because of the computational audio.

There is no way to have 990 kbps on all the time since it changes between 330 kbps, 660 kbps and 990k kbps for ldac depending on the connection of the bluetooth. Even ldac sounds better than apt-x hd since the highest quality it offers is 576 kbps until qualcomm releases lossless audio available to more devices since the nura true pro is the only bluetooth earbuds that offer lossless audio over bluetooth with 1 mpbs but goes down to 140 kbps to avoid drop outs and glitches in extreme conditions due to rf interference with the bluetooth connection. The focal bathys is a way better headphone than the airpod max since it has dac mode that offers lossless audio from the usb c port over a wired connection compared to relying on a bluetooth codec and connection.
Thanks for the evaluation, Colt. What cans would you recommend at the $500’ish price point that would flip the noise canceling to “fine” and the sound quality to “best ever” at that price point? Thanks again :)
I understand this review is at this point somewhat old. However, my question is how these headphones are in terms of quality when used wired via the lightning to 3.5mm adapter cable? This review of audio quality was when used wireless/bluetooth. Does the quality change or stay the same if used wired?
I'm a big fan of those headphones; the construction is incredibly solid! The audio quality is also fantastic in my opinion. While there are high-end audiophile headphones out there, I don't think it's a fair comparison given the significant price difference. The AirPods Max are geared towards everyday consumers, not professionals willing to spend thousands of dollars on headphones. But I do hope that Apple releases some professional high-tier headphones one day, for the audiophiles out here.
The pertinent question is how do they compare to other bluetooth noise cancelling headphones. Wired open back headphones for the same price are likely to beat them on sound quality alone.
Absolutely they are. WAY better than both Bose and Sennheiser. It has recently come to my attention, however, that when people talk about being “audiophiles,” what they mean is they’re CRAZY FILTHY RICH and have headphones that cost THOUSANDS of dollars and at those absolutely bonkers price points one would certainly hope the AirPods Max doesn’t live up to their standards. I’m sure drums and bass sound a lot better in hyper-expensive headphones than in normal-expensive headphones like APM. That being said, I’ve tried Bose, Sennheiser, and AirPods Max, and APM has the best quality of them all at the $300 to $600 price range. But…. There is a huge problem with them, and it’s one of their biggest strengths until it turns against you: they’re wireless.
@@nomoresaul yeah, that would be one big drawback for me as well. I have a pair of Sony XM3, and one thing I like about them is, I can use a wire, which sound comes out so much better in them when they’re wired into my iPhone or computer. Have you ever tested the Px8 from Bowers & Wilkins?
I agree with everything you reported. Keep in mind that these are not lossless (maybe the next iteration) so these were set up to lose against any decent set of wired headphones already. I feel like you missed a shining light in your review too. Pair these with an Apple TV and watch a recent movie with them. The spatial processing is like voodoo. The phones seem to disappear from your head and sound emanates from within the room. The head tracking makes it even more convincing. I wasn't expecting it to sound that remarkable. I will never sink a ton of dough into a surround setup again.
Hello, great vid! I have a question, I'm new into the music production world and using GarageBand and Logic Pro, I want to invest in my first good headphones for mixing, which ones (brand-wise) do you recommend?
I got them yesterday after much review and lets just say, i did not put them down for hours. I think spatial audio on apple music enhances the experience even more
Hey Colt, I did skip ahead and, as a composer who also listens primarily with high end headphones and reference monitors, I think your review is on the money. I bought the new AirPods Pro 2, and frankly find the audio quality from them to be comparable to the Max's. I wonder if you've had the chance to do a test on these for comparison.
Being a proffessional bass player, and working with quite high end headphones sennheiser hd800 as a reference, I will really recommend shure aonic 50. IMO the best sound quality in noice cancelling headphones on the market, and half the price of many of the competitors.
Good review, can you show us how we can check if a headset is good at reproduce the low level information?have you some songs or other tests? Thank you
Great assessment. Ultimately its wireless so the sound will take a hit, but as a set of cans for the road warrior who’s in apple ecosystem these seemed pegged to be my replacement for my wired AKG NC when the battery takes a crap. I have my LCD-Xs for when i want to tuck into music at home.
For mixing... at that price they compete with the Austrian Audio Hi series. I was wondering Cole if you have any experience with the Austrian Audio Hi-55 or 65 head phones. Thanks.
Bass is not all about harmonic distortion. ANC headphones have low distortion in the bass, because ANC removes distortion along outside noise. However distortion in headphones does not sound particularly offensive for some reason. Detail appears to come from something else.
Thanks for the review! I'd be curious to hear you opinion on other headphones, like the Focal Bathys, and the Bang and Olufsen H95s. Or even some of the cheaper ANC headphones as well. Cheers!
The biggest thing from a music production perspective for me is being able to track with them in transparency mode. It’s a game changer to hear your voice when singing without having bleed. Albeit you need to buy their silly cable to do it
You didn’t mention spatial audio. When watching a movie with Dolby Atmos via an Apple TV, my iPad, iPhone, or Mac, I can hear the sounds move around, not only from left to right, but front to back, top to bottom, and all around. THAT’S what sold me! 😉
What about mixing in Dolby/surround? Is there an alternative to having all the speakers for an Atmos studio? And the cost that goes with it? Great videos and great name! Thanks!

I love them and have had them for 1.5 years. But during this time they have been sent back to Apple for repair x3 each time they noted (water damage). But I do not wear them in damp area’s or even get them close to dampness let alone ever got them wet.
I have tried AirPods Max in the Apple brand store and I was pleasantly surprised in terms of comfort, sound quality, noise reduction, etc. It is an excellent product!
Curious if you listened to them wired? Also with Apple Music? Both are required for their best performance. The transparency makes it worth the price alone for me lol
Definitely the best transparency and the apple integration is great. The integration is the real selling point, but the noise cancelling needs to go to the Sony 1000xm5. I don’t travel without those.
Did you try them with both noise canceling and transparency off? They do sound different (and better, less muffled). Yes they are important features but you don't always need them, and I'm curious which mode(s) your sound quality comments apply to. Anyway great video.
Hey, I currently use the Sony WH-100XM4 and I am thinking of either buying the Sony WH-100XM5 or the AirPod Max. I only use my headphones wired to my PC and never Bluetooth (I have the Samsung Buds 2 Pro for outside use). I like the WH-100XM5 but when I wore the AirPod Max at the Apple store, I loved the weight and design. I have fairly big ears and a massive head lol. The WH-100XM4 are a little tight from the top of my head when fully extended and get very hot (but I love them). What would you recommend that I get? I heard that the sound quality on the Airpod Max is better. Noise Cancelling isn't an issue for me. Just need something that sounds good and will last me a few years. The sleek design of the AirPod Max is great and the ear cups are the perfect size. Do you have any problem when connected to the PC with the AirPod Max? Also, Mic isn't an issue either, I have a gaming mic as my main way to talk and communicate. I have a Windows Pc and Samsung 23 ultra so I'm in the Android eco-system. Any info will be much appreciated.
Just buy an akg k361 or 371 dude. They both have Bluetooth version. They are tuned way better than the crap that mainstream brands are pushing. Or you can buy the galaxy buds 2 or airpods pro 2; ironically they are miles better than over ear offerings.
Is there a wireless headset you recommend for critical listeners? I play keyboards and I like to mentally pick the music apart was thinking get these but will wait for the next release version. I do prefer good bass! 👍
are u able to review the mark levinson n5909? i feel like the 5909 is supposed to do the low level information the best from what i've been reading, but not sure.
I enjoyed the critique.. but I have thoughts and questions about a few things lol your telling me you can’t teach the right side of your head with the left hand? Also your battery review, did you accurately track the time or guesstimate lol
I’d like to know what are some of your favorite headphones to mix with in your studio. I’m in the market of a great set of headphones and money is no object. I’d like to hear from a professional like yourself.
Should I get these alone, or a pair of open ear grados (home quiet listening) + sennheisser momentum 4s (out in the world)? If these are good enough with audio quality to use as a home AND in the world, then maybe I’ll just get this only.
Personally, I find the head tracking spatial audio a bit annoying. And the fixed spatial audio to be just fine, not incredible or groundbreaking. Definitely nothing like sitting in the real room.
@@ColtCapperruneTech The spatial surround sound audio is highly towards movies mixed in proper Dolby Atmos, DTS:X etc and is a complete different animal for that purpose. The music industry is so far behind and lacking mixing in proper multi-channel audio, and have tested myself the new Airpods pro 2 and compared them with my Dolby Dimension headphones, which in turn are targeted for movies specifically, and yes, Apple just slays them beyond and is definitely not a gimmick from my perspective. If your're a movie entusiast like me who wants to watch movies in your silent without disturbing you neighbors, at this moment the best possible way - these are the ones to the get!
It depends in my opinion; do you want the best and most convenient anc with transparency mode? Just cough up the apple tax and buy a max. If you're after the quality well, there's an ocean of choices in front of you, you can buy an akg k361 or 371 and a pair of galaxy buds and a good iem like truthear hexa or zero red, all these combined under 500 bucks.
Thanks for review. Hoping to get some. Used. Got the handy dt770 but these sound great hoping AirPod max 2 r lighter and cheaper. Can u review the new mbox studio interface in logic / pro tools using the Bluetooth output to the AirPod max. ?
Hey I had planned on skipping like you suggested but you have killer b-roll and I like how you described them. Thanks for making this for us.. hoping they do a second gen with H2.. imagine that.
It’s seams that you only listened to them through Bluetooth. I would really be interested in your evaluation with them plugged in to an audio source ( Lightning port). Where more information can be heard. That makes it apples to apples with your comparison. Please and thank you. Great job, best review I’ve heard.
Nice nice nice! You CAN teach an old Gen X new tricks! Thank you - I went away all summer without my beloved Air Max headphones and they were just stuck at 1% and not charging - or seemingly so - I just tried the 10 second hard reset and lo and behold! it worked - after the re-set the headphones said 100% charged - it was like magic. Made my day - I'm tired of things being easy to break or broken so it was nice to be able to use my headphones again.
Great review! I was able to pick some up today myself for $330 pretty much, brand new in box. Which compared to the $549.99 Apple retail price I think is a good deal. Haven't opened them just yet, going too soon, but looking forward to trying them out. Got senior year of college coming up 2023-2024 and wanted a pair of headphones, so I figured they'd work great since I own an iPhone and MacBook Pro.
I just bought the Neumann nd20 . Been using my Sony 1000 xm2’s for years. Tryed the xm3’s and xm4’s but the sQ has gone down. Wanted something close to the xm2’s and just a bit better in sQ for mixing. The xm2’s can be eq’d to be very close believe it or not.
I would love a video on which headphones have the best sound quality! Personally, I just love headphones with very good bass quality because of the type of music I listen to, so would love to see this
im still thinking about AirPods max, seinheizers similar high model, sony, and bose quietcomfort. And still it's hard for me to decide, probably seinheizers would have better sound, but worse anc. Etc. In terms of Bluetooth headphones.
Excellent review, not Apple fan boy mush. Was thinking about getting a pair , trying to determine if they will provide sufficient noise cancellation at indoor gun range.
Good info video. Too bad you caught the bad update. 7 months ago they where amazing. Can u do the same for the bang & Olufsen h95 or maybe even compare them?
If I wanted to do some music work on a flight, would you recommend these? Or is there another pair that you like? Not for any serious mixing of course but just for composing or arranging. I normally use DT 990s for music production but of course they are open backed and don’t have noise cancellation so they’re pretty bad for flights. And of course any Bluetooth earbuds are out because of the latency. Thoughts? Thanks!

What would you recommend as an alternative to these from a sound quality perspective?
I love them and have had them for 1.5 years. But during this time they have been sent back to Apple for repair x3 each time they noted (water damage). But I do not wear them in damp area’s or even get them close to dampness let alone ever got them wet.
I have tried AirPods Max in the Apple brand store and I was pleasantly surprised in terms of comfort, sound quality, noise reduction, etc. It is an excellent product!
Curious if you listened to them wired? Also with Apple Music? Both are required for their best performance. The transparency makes it worth the price alone for me lol
could you please review the Sony WH1000-XM5?? im trying to decide between the AirPods Max and the Sony's
Great review, I just hope you would review some others like: Sony Wh 10000-MX5 and so. Thank you.
Also your battery review, did you accurately track the time or guesstimate lol
please do a review of the sonos ace to see if they actually have good sound
i love when a reviewer knows what he is talking about, great job! the others are just famous youtubers pretending to be experts😂
If you want something else to compare them to, try Bang & Olufsen H95 headphones. They are more expensive, but debatably better audio quality.
How would you compare them to the Focal Listen Professional?
Thank you, Nice vid. I’m curious about spatial audio with this product.
Personally, I find the head tracking spatial audio a bit annoying. And the fixed spatial audio to be just fine, not incredible or groundbreaking. Definitely nothing like sitting in the real room.
@@ColtCapperruneTech raaaaa too bad. Hope Atmos gonna evolve and get out of the niche.
Same!
Thanks for the video! What headphones do you think are a better option?
Please review soundcore headphones as well!
So did you compare your low level info and reverb trails using the bi direction amal cable instead Of blue tooth ?
Hey I had planned on skipping like you suggested but you have killer b-roll and I like how you described them. Thanks for making this for us.. hoping they do a second gen with H2.. imagine that.
Could you please do a video which headphones would reccomend to buy?
Made my day - I'm tired of things being easy to break or broken so it was nice to be able to use my headphones again.
what would you say are better headphones soundwise at that or lower pricepoint ?
What are the headphones better than apple ones then?
What headphones would you recommend at a similar price range based on sound quality and comfort alone?
This video really helped me understand what to consider when buying a pair of these
Great review! I was able to pick some up today myself for $330 pretty much, brand new in box. Which compared to the $549.99 Apple retail price I think is a good deal. Haven't opened them just yet, going too soon, but looking forward to trying them out. Got senior year of college coming up 2023-2024 and wanted a pair of headphones, so I figured they'd work great since I own an iPhone and MacBook Pro.
where did u get them for $330
I’m also super curious to know where did you find the price
@@jasonawesome3821 offerup
@@Handsomej93 offerup, however I decided to not use them and resold them for $380. So still don’t have headphones. Lol
Thanks for the video!
Could you give me an alternative for the APM in the same price range? I’m thinking of selling them.
What do you think about h95 B&O in terms on sound quality and noise canceling?
Can you please do a video on what you believe are the best Bluetooth Headphones.
Excellent!
which headphones would you recommend?
I would love a video on which headphones have the best sound quality! Personally, I just love headphones with very good bass quality because of the type of music I listen to, so would love to see this
Are they good for listening to house music and techno music and stuff?
Is there any particular brand model you think might beat these?
im still thinking about AirPods max, seinheizers similar high model, sony, and bose quietcomfort. And still it's hard for me to decide, probably seinheizers would have better sound, but worse anc. Etc.
In terms of Bluetooth headphones.
I always have a headache when ever used this plus my ears ache too because of the pressure clamping or its about the padding
Would you say would it be nice for podcasting and i mean like beginner
Levels?
Do you have some alternative option suggestions from a sound quality point of view. Wired and wireless. That would be great.
So which headphones are the best for studio quality?
Excellent review, not Apple fan boy mush. Was thinking about getting a pair , trying to determine if they will provide sufficient noise cancellation at indoor gun range.
You need ear protection for that, not noise cancellation.
@@TrenierTrombone I understand I either use foam ear plugs and then over the ear protection. Or I use AirPod Pro’s and ear protection over them .
Thoughts? Thanks!
Okay, what highend headphones do you recommend instead then?
