In this video we talk about the band's gear, the production of the video and album, and how one of my Indian friends in the states thinks this is one of the coolest things he's ever heard...

The thought that anyone (a whole generational culture, in the case of this song) can think this sort of behaviour is in any way acceptable just seems...alien, I guess...to me. Like, beyond all common sense and logic, morality aside. Same with bigotry. We might not look it, but we're all the same species, right? I just can't wrap my brain around it. It's like trying to visualise infinity, or 5 dimensions. You just can't.💙

There's a special place in hell for people that beat and rape women. Disgusting. I feel like the punishment should mirror the crime. Or just 86 them and save time.
Yes! In my eyes, A man is not a man if he couldn’t respect women.
What makes this song great and make me respect the band so much is that they don't just say 'beat the shit out of every rapist and abuser, period.' The lyrics opens up the possibilities for a non-violent solution. Lines like "one day I might change his kind with my mind", "if words won't change them they can taste my boot", and "if you stray, come back and run with the pack" suggests that they are willing to accept attempts at changes for the better. But it's a one time chance, and if you miss it or are unwilling to change, there's a beatdown coming your way.
Then there's just cathartic violence!

I'm very glad to hear his reaction to "sometimes you need to beat the hell out of a rapist" was "Sometimes violence is the answer". I love you always tying the cultural aspects in too. Kali is not the goddess of asking nicely.
Kali is a destruction deity but she's also about protecting the innocent. So her image in this video is appropriate.
You shouldn't apologize for being emotional. It's a delicate topic, and good music like this moves us. Bloodywood is a gem, they deserve the world... super talented guys!
My aunt was mentally disabled and institutionalized and got pregnant. Sooo.... you can see why I am very grateful to see another man who feels the same as I do. I've been lucky, men in my life have all been great, but I understand this anger about violence against women. She passed away and her child was adopted by her brother, but the fact there are people who commit rape and other violence against women who can't defend themselves makes me love this song so much. Because 'not all men but we need all men' is a real thing to say when we live in a male-dominated world where women who are hurt aren't believed but men who know their peers did something bad and THEY should hold them accountable. As I said, I have great men in my family and I hope they would all hold other bad men accountable for hurting others.
The folk drums are called nagara and the trumpet is called nadaswaram. These two instruments are used more in a southern india especially in temples of The goddess kali who is the goddess of death, master of war, justice and harmony. She is represented by the lead dancers in blue. Kali in modern is used has a symbol of empowerment to fight against sexual assault. About the nagaras they come in all sizes and happy to see that it is finally getting used in metal music because there are certain nagara drums sound really heavy that they give you goosebumps. Both the folk instruments are used for worships and marriages. It's especially used during festive season where goddess kali's statue is placed in a chariot and is taken around the city for blessing. So these instruments are played to signal the arrival of the goddess who will bring auspiciousness and change which you can see in there lyrics too.

I came here to say this. I loved the representation of Kali given the content of this song. It gives another subtle layer to the music keeping it very thematic and rooted deep in my father's culture

As a victim of sexual assault and rape, I'm deeply thankful they chose to speak in defense of people like me. I wish NO woman, child or man would suffer something so hideous like this. It tears your soul apart forever; you just learn how to cope with the pain and the trauma the best way you can.

I absolutely LOVE this reaction. The biggest thing is how you support trigger warnings. I watched a couple other folks reaction in the metal/rock community, and some actually bashed it. Love seeing my fellow big burly dudes standing up for this stuff!
As someone who also knows victims of sexual assault I know trigger warnings serve a real purpose.
As Im personaly not a victim I dont care. But a few lines of text can avoid others haveing their day ruined. So why not have it.

The guitarist Karan engineered it and mastered it as well, with help from the others in the band. They tried outsourcing it but it never sounded right so they spent a few months learning how to mix and master and just did it themselves

Right? Engineering is an art form within an art form.
Culturally, the rhythms of India are tribal, energetic, groovy as hell. One day I was attending a seminar with master sitarist Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, it was 7am and he was shredding the sitar, it was amazing. But as a metalhead, I recognize the scale he improvised with(harmonic minor scale). I said to him, "you transpose that on an electric guitar and it's a metal guitar solo you know." My god, I offended him I think, but I understand why too. All that to say, that the intensity found in the music of India, the musical creschendo of the ragas(classical form of impro with specific motion of notes), is as intense as metal. Bloodywood is a perfect mix of both worlds.

This is one of the few albums ever I think, at least in my life, that I would honestly consider flawless. Absolute greatness. They deserve every good thing that comes to them

A big chunk of super aggressive music just doesn't ring true to me. Like the aggression is more an act. When these guys sound angry and pissed off, i believe it 100%.

I think in some ways you're right about it being an act for a lot of bands, but I'd like to offer up the possibility that that doesn't inherently make it not real or inauthentic. Not always, that is. I think some bands kind of... Force, for lack of a better word, the aggression, as an outlet for their own emotions.
Not saying you're wrong, just suggesting an alternative for *some* cases. :)
Plenty of real shit to be pissed at nowadays. To not mention any of it in the genre built for it is honestly bordering on cowardice imo. Glad to see a shift happening and gaining traction.
Agreed that there is not always a need for anger for Metal. Listen to the Colors album by Between the Buried and Me and you'll see that perfected. The entire album is a masterpiece culminating to the crescendo of my favorite song; White Walls.
I'm just gonna put it out there:
Jayant is the only growler/screamer that I've ever heard that brings as much raw, unadulterated emotion as he does to the mic. I'm not joking when I say this. The first song I ever heard was Jee Veerey, and something about Jayant's voice is...motivating, to say the least. Then I heard Endurant, and his voice there was like a stone wall -- not budging an inch. And all in the context of being bullied. Then I heard the clean vocals he had in Yaad. And it is as though that while he's singing, he's right there with you if you're grieving over the loss of a furry or non-furry family member.
Then you hear Machi Bhasad, Ghaddar, Aaj, and Dana Dan. And in every one of these songs, Jayant has this amazing talent to vocalize the emotions tied to the song. Here, for Dana Dan, I've never heard ANY metal screamer or growler with as much pent-up, unadulterated rage and anger as Jayant has. And the thing is, watching the "Raj Against The Machine" documentary, Jayant actually seems like a really chill and overall good dude. But just like this song shows, there are parts of us that are animals that we keep caged -- because if we let those animals out, then who knows how much damage or destruction that may cause around us.
And thing is, for me, these guys don't know it, but it isn't just a 'playlist' thing -- these guys are mentors of a sort, with a mindset that I believe more people should look into and apply in their own life, because I can't count the number of times that just listening to their songs, it convinces me to keep fighting, even when I don't want to. They keep pushing me, even when I want to stay comfortable. It's probably the most valuable thing they do in this world, to make people strong by making us uncomfortable. And though we might think we don't need it, obviously we do, if we keep coming back to it.
And as a side note, both the Snake Charmer, Arty (who sang in Aaj) and the dancers here are all very beautiful women. They've definitely got their respective talents.

Tank, have you watched their "Raj against the machine" documentary? You wanna talk about impressive; what they walked themselves into, without even playing a single live show, talk about impressive. I really hope, as a band, that they have a super long road ahead of them, that they'll keep pushing forward on. These guys are just so amazing, in more ways than one.

Also, I cannot get dana dan out of my head.; It is literally the most impressive and important song I've ever heard;. I'm a year off 60...I've heard an awful lot of songs
Little note: that angry blue lady in the MV? That's a representation of Kali, the Goddess. I'm sure someone else can give a better explanation than I can (since I'm neither Hindu nor Indian), but some of Her common attributes include "Destroyer of evil", "Mother of all" and "Divine manifestation of wrath". Also one time Her dance almost ended the universe. You can see why the band decided to invoke Her image here.

@@SLYKM one of the lines, "baje gi joot" (or something like that) closely sounds like "baje gi choot" which will, literally, translate to "ring the pussy/vagina". The closest English translation will be "I am gonna beat that pussy up". This is due to the fact that to ring a bell, you need to hit it, and many Indian bells need to be hit hard 😂. Hence why the word for "to ring", i.e. "baje", has been used.
Now there are layers to this. First, saying that the rapist is a coward, i.e. a pussy.
Second, the word for "pussy", i.e. choot, sounds a lot like "boot" hence the line "let them taste my boot" is a clever word play that you can enjoy if you know both Hindi and English and can be a good translation as one of the preceding lines which as "lato ke bhoot" (which refers to people who need to be beaten up to make them understand things) also matches with "choot" and "boot".

Not into folk-metal, not into nu metal - yet ordered this album. Loved them from the moment I saw their first videos. What I especially likee about them, is the sort of political bachground. And for a band from India addressing sexual violence is super important.
"Protective Violence"... That sounds like a good way of putting it and the term I'd use. Basically using Violence to protect others when nobody else has the balls. Love this song and have been following Bloodywood for a couple of years now. Their covers are pretty good too! Great reaction vid \m/

Honestly I haven't been this excited about a band in a long time. Their sound, their energy, how they balance two stlyes that I didn't think would ever work together, and on top of that write about things that really matter and be awsome human beings in general, is just incredible. I've been listening to this album every day since it came out, and I don't see that changing anytime soon :D
I had a similar reaction you did. That line "Raise a fist for the nameless faces he disgraces" took my breath away. This album is outstanding. To hear it, you would think they are twenty year hardened veterans of metal, not an independent band recording their first album on their own. Amazing. There aren't a lot of bands left that I'm like "I need to see them live," but this band? Holy crap, do I need to see this band live. I'm hoping they come to America sometime, maybe next year. I'm guessing they'd be a supporting act. If a bigger band does bring them on as a guest, they better watch out, because they'll probably get blown off the stage by these guys.

That is definitely one of the best album this year and it will be hard to top that.
The fact that they are self releasing it is really impressive but that comes with a few problems. The biggest problem IMO would be that the physical release sold out so fast. So far I only see the regular CD still as Pre-Order and only on the us store. On Global the CD and Vinyl are still sold out.
I might be in the minority but I still like to buy physical releases. Luckily I got mine before they sold out on Global.

I just discovered them a couple weeks ago. As a drummer of 24 years, the speed and precision which their drummer hammers out in detail is mixed with many pauses and breaks on off notes where he ends on a technical fill, with constant tempo and style changes, and precision transitioning, is impressive. The whole band are phenomenal musicians and songwriters. I love that they keep Indian culture and traditional instruments in their songs. So boggled at the speed that he screams at. I can’t even read the CC that fast! The content is serious and important to speak up for. It’s very empowering for victims to watch someone speak up for them and giving them a voice. That’s just selfless heroic stuff right there. You don’t find much metal with such depth and clarity, and also it’s just a song you can’t help but headbang to.
This band is like a tornado passing through your headphones! So good beat and heavy as fuck! The level of energy it brings me is just awesome! Since you introduced them here I have been a fan and the new record is awesome! Thanks Tank for keeping up the good work!
I got to see them with A killer's Confession a few nights ago. Dude. These guys blew the roof off of the venue with this song. The guy that does the rap parts was sick, so his parts were done with tracks. It didn't take anything away from their live show at all. Great live show, great energy and they sound amazing live.

Got to hang with them for a bit after their set. Waylon and the guys were super nice and went out of their way to talk to anyone who wanted to say hi. Not many bands just hang out after their shows with fans.
I always watch the original before the reactions, love them! I also just recently watched the Back Lounge podcast with Karan..the point when he so humbly asked what advice u could give to the band at this moment..Bud, my heart leapt into my throat! But what u replied man, pure fucking gold.. :) I haven't felt this kind of intensity and passion about music or a band in a very long time, so glad you're on board with them :)

When you've got Kali imagery (the lead dancer) and know your history (i.e. origin of the word thug), lines like "Now we thuggin' it" lands a hell of a lot harder

Saw Bloodywood on Oct 6 in Denver. Fucking amazing. The venue only held 450, and it was packed. Circle pit, singer and one drummer in the middle of the pit.
A lot of positivity from the band. Politicial yes... but not in the way that the US is used to hearing. The singer spoke of SA/DM, that it needs to be erased from the planet. He also spoke about the issue of mental illness, that if you need to be treated, there should be no stigma in seeking it.
I'm older, 61, and have been going to shows since 1975. In all of those decades, there are a few bands that have recently left a very strong impression, and Bloodywood is definitely in my top 15, of over 40 years of live music.
Potentially the best metal album of the year. Best debut for sure. The music video (and song) are masterpieces.

It's been so surreal watching this band grow from just the guitarist and vocalist doing covers of meme songs all the way to this. I love these guys so much and I can't wait to see where else they go from here
So I'm watching your reaction video after discovering this band earlier today. This song I listened to 3 times, back to back, because it's amazing on many levels. I had to pace those listens out because of my tears about the subject matter.
Seeing tears in your eyes, too, means a lot to me.
Ive seen a lot of reactions because I just like to see other people enjoy this Band and song that I enjoy. And I am surprised at how little the theme of this song is even mentioned. It's in a trigger warning and many have found the lyrics in captions, and still, almost no one even acknowledges it. Its weird, it certainly made it impossible to just enjoy the song as a great banger the first time and most reactions haven't felt honest because of that. I guess most don't want heavy topics in a fun reaction video, I get that and that's fine. But thank you for being genuine.
A magnificent album, probably my number 2 in this year with Wilderun stealing the prime spot. Dana Dan and Yaad hit me emotionally different EVERYtime. I listened throught he whole album when I was out jogging, Dana Dan made me sprint for 4 minutes and with Yaad I had problems to stay in my breathing rhythm while I tried not to cry waterfalls.
This may be one of the best debut album I've ever experienced. Thank you Bloodywood, thank you Tank, thank you god/life/samsara/younameit the gift that is music.
I swear everything I hear from bloodywood is so mind changing. Lyrically they are so unafraid. And musically they are above many bands. So dang man so good.

Wow, what a _GREAT_ song! Thank you for recording this! I also find it interesting that my head bopping/banging was a little different from yours. Almost the entire time I headbanged in a half note (halftime) feel as opposed to you mostly headbanging the quarter notes. I'm pretty sure that as I continue to replay this song I'll often switch between feeling the song in 2 and feeling the song in 4. The song is written _so_ well that it makes listening to the song with both of those beat feelings very easy.
I absolutely love the pausing to break things down. The reaction of dissecting piece by piece is, in my honest opinion, the best way. Bloodywood has been my favorite bands that have came out in recent years. I can't wait to see them State side!!!

Not gonna lie - I cried watching this video. Like you, a lot of people in my close circle have experiences (sexual) assault in their lives, often times multiple times.
If this song had any other lyrics I probably would have said "Well.. a bit too "much" for me" but with those lyrics.. I feel the hate, I feel the anger in those words, and I "enjoyed" the song a lot. Your commentary and your own reactions made it so much better, yet.

Just for anyone curious, Dana Dan translates to "Bring the Beatdown", but the way I hear it, he's saying "you're not gonna die."
I think this will definitely be one of the best albums of the year. I love how they mix the instruments of their culture in the music. It sounds really cool. I love the girl's voice towards the of of the song, it was beautiful over the heavy sound. I also love the lyrics of their songs and how they aren't afraid to say these things that should be said even though some of it can get them in trouble in their home country. I absolutely adore musicians who use the platform to stand up for what is right. All around this is an amazing band!

Great video mate, and I agree with everything you said. I have loved Bloodywood ever since I caught their cover of Smells like teen spirit.
All I will say is if this song had been around about 20 years ago, I would have spoken out about the abuse I had. I am ok now, and yes I am a man, it does happen, so please speak out, even if it is not physical, I hope this song helps all those people who feel trapped.
This hits like a punch and I totally agree with your general thoughts on the meaning, the song, and their messages in the latest songs.
One thing I noticed hearing the song again in your reactions are the syncopated "hu"s that come in toward the end, which remind me of The Hu's Wolf Totem. In both songs I think they give that feeling of everyone coming together to fight against something.
I found these guys by accident today...this song specifically. Amazing band. Love the message, especially if you understand how women can be treated in India. Incredible band. New fan.

I am both amazed and grateful that this wonderful band has taken an uncompromising stance against this horrifying brutality . I only came across this band last night, and I've also subscribed to the band's website. That guy, Karan, is a terrific guitarist and flautist. All members of this band are impressive. And I agree with the comment of one heavy metal fan who said that it's heavy metal leading the way when it comes to bands using cultural instruments in their compositions. All the best !

Had the album pre-ordered as the CD version (I like to fill up shelves with CDs for some reason lol) and did not regret it for a second. What these guys put out all by themselves is nothing short of amazing. Such a nice breath of fresh air!

You're "waffle" and chat about stuff between the song about gear, meaning, lyrical content to me has alot more meaning and understanding than most i think. Your extremely knowledgeable with gear and production (wonder where you learned all that huh?) and its extremely refreshing to hear. Don't apologize, its (IMO) very appreciated that you do that. Plus your little tool tips reminds me of a show called "pop-up video" that died which kinda gave little tid bits of info about the band/music video/song durring it and i miss that alot!
That guitar tone reminded me a lot of Mick Gordon on the Doom soundtrack, and I love it. If this isn’t a topic that deserves a little Rip & Tear, I don’t know what is.

8:00 Not gonna lie, even I didn't know this band existed, and the wilder part is I learned this band through my brother, who doesn't gets dwell much in Indian music/movies, Bollywood or anything related to India in general.
Edit: Also Dhol is a great instrument, Im glad they use it in metal rock
