    I agree with your assessment of Yamaha clarinets. They are excellent student instruments. I learned on a Yamaha, but when I switched to a wooden clarinet, I went for other makes. My main clarinet is a 1971 Selmer Series 10, bought second hand about 18 years ago, and still plays really well. Vintage professional clarinets are a worthwhile investment for a serious clarinet player.

    Good advice.
    My only suggestion in looking for cracks in a wooden instrument is to inspect the outside of the upper joint around the A key, and the tenon that goes into the barrel. Both of these areas are subject to cracks.
