Years ago when I lived in the capital city of New Zealand we used to go and watch the likes of the Foker Freindship trying to land in a strong southerly, the aircraft sat there for sometime before aborting the landing. I had one flight out of that airport in the 80s, we were told to be ready to get onboard at a moments notice, the Foker Friendship was being tehterd down in the wind, there was a brief calming of the wind and we were off loaded and away insde about 10 minutes, we had a tail wind all the way home to where I lived 40 minutes it took and usually back then it was 50 to 55 minutes flight. Love seeing the A380 magic aircraft
Ha! The old Fokker Friendship. Brings to mind the one about the Australian bloke who was trying to book a flight with Fokker Friendship. Chap at the desk says, “Sorry Ocker, the Fokker’s chokker”!
Incredible I am lucky to watch A380 landing and take off at Toronto, Canada. Always impressed by this mighty bird and here it’s amazing to see it just staying like that in air.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhh ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre currently attempting to land but the wind speed is matching our ground speed, so it looks like we will be floating here for a while-ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and if we keep in this positon-ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, we will simplely go around and give it another go. thank you"
I once piloted an aircraft into Leeds Bradford on a very windy day, and was asked by ATC if I was in reverse! FYI, it's not possible to deploy reverse thrust while airborne - unless there is a VERY serious fault.
Not on this Airbus jet, but the DC-8-71 model was able to use the inboard engines in reverse thrust while inflight. Loud and shook the entire fuselage, but perfectly legal in that model DC-8.
Not really hovering, but the telephoto lens makes it look that way. Probably doing at least 100 knots ground speed. It would take a strong hurricane to make it “hover” and there would be no air traffic under such conditions.
Credit where credits due- to the pilots sheesh what a job keeping the beast hoovering like that, can even hear the dog in the back ground barking his/her's approval, 😅, seriously tho that was incredible
Although I am a bit concerned here. I am hopeful their actual ground speed is faster than it appears in the video. If they're truly hovering then a sudden shift in the wind could slam them straight onto the ground.
Flying into a strong headwind with zero groundspeed and adequate airspeed is a cool trick, but what happens when the wind stops or shifts direction? The airplane has no momentum, it would take a while to rebuild airspeed. The plane would literally just drop out of the sky.
The engines are going pretty hard to fight the wind in this video. If the wind slowed or changed direction the aircraft would stay in the air and suddenly seem to speed up in another direction as the resistance was removed.
Is it possible to hover land I wonder. Increase power to fly over the runway without flaps then once almost above runway drop flaps and hover land horizontally.
@@jonasw4921 Yeah, in the end, I assumed what they were doing was deemed safe. Optics on the video can be deceiving. Still a surreal video at first glance!
I was working this day when storm Eunice came that was the most exciting day to work on the ramp!! Ok Mayb not so for the passengers but for me it was great never seen so many go arounds and so many aborted landings just watching it all unfold on bigjet tv was great as well
Cool video , but very misleading description. Near hovering.? Not even close! Approach speed of an A380 is close to 210 mph airspeed, so the plane is going at least that fast in relation to the air. If the 65 mph was a direct head wind it'd be a 155 mph ground speed. It's still probably going faster than that (ground speed) since it's a cross wind and also the pilots may have had a bit more than "nominal" approach speed because of said cross wind. Then, of course, there's the angle the plane is approaching the camera and the telephoto lens that also contribute to the appearance that the airplane is moving very slowly. Again though, cool video to be sure. There's plenty like this on TH-cam.
Agreed. It was in a severe crab, so it was coming straight at the camera but at the angle to the wind. It's like an optical illusion, you would expect it to move forward in relation to the roof in the foreground, but it was instead coming straight at it but angled. That is why on the Goaround it went straight over the top of the camera. All in all very cool indeed
@@lexteakmialoki5544 you both are party poopers! But really, after reading both of your descriptions and re-watching the video, you're definitely right.
