    Beat most things from 0 to 5mph. Oh my god, that absolutely blew me away! ..You know the future has arrived when your car can beat anything to 5 mph!
    On a serious note, I quite like this little car. I would drive it everyday. It's great for nipping round a city. I think it's quite cute!

    Our company used to service a fleet of these back in the seventies...i remember my first test drive in one - very quiet but slow and the constant sound of those clicking "Albright" contactors. Old technology (even for then) resistor switching control.

      Albrights or similar still used as isolators in the model 3 battery pack. utterly reliable so why not , I can even hear the clicks in my ENV van.....

    There's absolutely zero chance of any car manufacturer - present or future, making any vehicles in the 21st century which run on batteries. It's impossible.
    What next? Cars that do 0 - 60 in less than 5 secs? TVs that are flat and hang on the wall? Pah - Another pie in the sky video.

    In 1969 I worked at a Fleet Street Press agency as a junior photographer and my boss and I were instructed to follow a Royal Enfield prototype around central London and take pictures of it in iconic locations. The session went well and I remember speaking of how this was the future any minute.... I guess the big car companies got their way shortly after but we chased this little car all round Hyde Park corner in our Austin Cambridge and the little Enfield had the better of us at every turn.... Great fun , now some fella called Elon has the old guard on the run... Go Elon!

      It also wasn't really a car, it was an electric tricycle. So in that way it was quite forward thinking. Setting it loose on the public in 1980's london was less of a good idea.
      I see more and more electric bicycles about filling the role the C5 had, one of many cases of concept thwarted by execution.

    I'm all for electric cars: not only for progress of technology and the (debatable) reduction in overall emissions. However, nobody talks about the strain on the power grid and increase in electric costs (which use some sort of fossil fuel or nuclear) once everybody in your neighborhood starts charging one or two electric cars per night on a daily basis. Once electric cars become available in a range of price points, much like today's gasoline cars, I feel like we are going to have an entire new problem to deal with.

      Aviation Direction I live on an off grid island in New Zealand powered mainly with solar and there are a number of electric cars here it doesn’t cost a lot to install solar panels especially if you are on grid and don’t have to buy batteries simple solution really, solar panels are getting better and better and produce power even on cloudy days

    • @coolfrost6
      @coolfrost6 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you that electric is not some kind of wunder solution. But, i think that point worth keeping in mind is that a internal combustion engine can never be a sustainable solution, whereas electric might at some point be sustainable with more green energy(Wind and solar) and recycling of batteries.
      And considering the existing infrastructure for recycling cars the impact of raw material extraction might at some point begin to decrease.

    • @AviationDirection
      @AviationDirection 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kiwimum13 It may work well for an off-grid situation. Say, however, if all of NYC starts using Teslas for their taxis, the load on the power grid will be enormous. Unless it's engineered ahead of time, the power grids will just overload and you'll have outages everywhere, thus defeating the purpose of having an electric car network to begin with.
      Due to the relatively low number of electric cars now, we don't really see a difference yet. Think of it as when everybody turns on their air conditioning during the summer and there is the occasional power outage. Now consider the same situation, but year-round, with electric vehicles. Just saying if the public really wants this, it must plan for it.

      In short, though, the Nat Grid have already stated they can handle the increase in BEV charging and smart charging plus V2G (Vehicle To Grid) technology will help even out the spikes and variances the grid has to deal with daily.

    • @AviationDirection
      @AviationDirection 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll have to check it out, though I don't see how the grids (at least in some places) will be able to handle such a demand of charging electric vehicles. They can barely keep up with A/C units during the summer -- and that's a seasonal problem, not year-long. We'll have to see.

    Actually, afforable LONG RANGE electric cars priced similar to gasoline ECONOMY cars have already been released. No, it's not the hyped $35,000 220-mile Tesla Model 3, which is STILL unavailable, but the $29,500 124-mile Hyundai Ioniq Electric since late 2016 (2017 model year) and the $29,900 151-mile Nissan Leaf since late 2017 (2018 model year), both of which can fully fast charge in 1 hour.
    The non-negotiable $35,000 still costs $27,500 which makes the Tesla Model 3's price on par with that of a loaded midsize Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord, which doesn't meet the lowest price point. On the other hand, the $29,500 and $29,900 MSRPs are both negotiable, which mean that they are both probably $27,500 after negotiation, and when combined with the $7,500 United States federal electric vehicle tax incentive, they each cost only $20,000, making them the same as the MSRP of that of a slightly optioned economy Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

      Furthermore recent disruption in oil markets (see this link from 2016)

      *The energy density performance of Li-ion batteries is horrible. Do you realize that the best BEV range available is a Tesla S 100... and that its massive 1,440 lbs of Li-ion batteries only stores the same energy of 8 gallons of hydrocarbon fuel that weighs just 56 lbs!*

    • @STho205
      @STho205 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zamboro he's got you on the energy to weight.
      However the 1440lbs of chemicals, ion bridges and Cat/Anode can be renewed with a charge, so the life energy is the number of cycles available divided by two (good healthy battery kinetic energy = 1/2 potential usually 30%-80% charge). So if you figure all those miles and then reverse them into a 50mpg (imp) and add the weight of the lifetime gallons, you'll have the lifetime energy density.

    • @Zamboro
      @Zamboro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      >"he's got you on the energy to weight."
      No he doesn't, because electric motors are over 90% efficient whereas gas engines average between 15% (gasoline) and 25% (diesel).
      That is a tremendous difference, which accounts for why electric cars get the equivalent of 90-100mpg or so (where 1 gallon of gasoline equals 33kwh).
      This is how electric cars can pollute less even when charging from a grid which is still partly fossil fueled: They simply consume less energy per mile driven by a wide margin, which incurs less pollution.

    • @Zamboro
      @Zamboro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      >"Do you realize that the best BEV range available is a Tesla S 100... and that its massive 1,440 lbs of Li-ion batteries only stores the same energy of 8 gallons of hydrocarbon fuel that weighs just 56 lbs!"
      Yes, but so what? If it does the job, it does the job. And there's room for even more batteries, as the new roadster demonstrates. Cost is the only reason the Model S doesn't go even further on a charge, and the cost is rapidly falling.

    Electric Cars. I do genuinely believe that they could save the planet. But the place where vital minerals for the batteries is extracted, the Congo, is full of people mining this stuff, without any safety equipment, getting ill, and dust from the mining is everywhere. As usual, by Western standards these workers are very poorly paid and die a lot younger than they should. The whole process wants tightly regulating, and the workers need to unionise to ensure they get a fair deal. But as usual, car manufacturers are obliged to shareholders first and foremost and nothing must be allowed to get in the way of their dividends. So countries will continue to be unfairly exploited. And with energy prices going through the roof is that people won’t be able to afford to charge the batteries, thus slowing down production of electric cars. The 2030 date of zero carbon is looking like getting shelved. It just takes corporations to have a bit less power, and to prioritise people and the planet instead of profit margins.
