- Caring for roses can be intimidating. And caring for roses in the heat of the summer can be even harder! But here are my simple steps for helping my roses survive the heat! A little summer rose maintenance will go a long way to growing roses in your garden.

Hi Amanda, a little extra but important tip, definitely clean your pruners in between cutting your different roses!! In fact, in between cutting anything, but personally I’m not that particular with that, but I am with my roses since they are so prone to different types of diseases

@@shesamadgardener 😀 you were very careful with that plant and you did remove the spotted leaves with your hands so that’s good!, next time you’ll know to clean the pruners… 👍 Roses are so beautiful so anything we can do to keep them healthy and growing. It worth it 😊

I switched to the All In One Rose care last year. Really happy with the results-my 7 rose plants are doing great! Trying climbing roses this year & training is new for me. Thanks for sharing such great info. Zone 8A

Wonderful video! AGAIN! We used to live in wine country and the landscapers, of the wineries, would literally use a hedge saw and would just cut the living life of their roses, very painful to watch but this made their paths manageable....love roses!
They are very hardy plants! I have a friend who grows all of roses and she uses the same method and literally hacks them back … they love her for it!

Another timely video. I’m growing 2 Peggy Martin roses I started from cuttings from a friend. Great tips on getting them started on trellises. The branches are running in every direction like a herd of cats. 🤣 Now I know I need to trim off the ones growing forward. Maybe I can get those cuttings rooted so I can share. Propagating is not easy but it is rewarding when you get lucky and get them to root. Thanks for all the info and the Rose Care. Will definitely be looking for that!

Thank you for this great video. I love roses but every summer i hate to see my roses suffering on hot days. I live in Redlands California and we have many 3 digits days. My roses are small and cranchy.
It’s just been so hot this year!
It may help to choose varieties that thrive in your climate growing zone. I'm in 9b and deal with my share. There are cold and shade roses to choose from.

On the topic of powdery mildew, once the plant has it, is there no way to get rid of it short of taking off all the leaves?
I have 3 peonies that, even after spraying with a product for powdery mildew, just don't seem to ward it off. If the plants can't photosynthesize, is it OK to cut the whole plant back, even if it's only July? I know last year I couldn't stand it, and I cut them back, I think in late August, but it was concerning. They did come back this year and bloom but it's happening again. I tried to stay on top of it but I was unseccessful. I think I'm going to take the middle plant out and move it so the other 2 have more air flow but until then, any suggestions?
I'm a sucker for the tall Phlox, and of course, they too have powdery mildew. I did move them recently but their bottoms are bare😮😂!! I'm waiting to see how they bloom.

Hi there! You can use a neem oil spray or insecticidal soap spray to get rid of powdery mildew. However, once a leaf has it, the leaf will not return back to normal. I don’t have lots of experience with peonies, so I can’t say whether it is okay to cut them back.

I have always heard that you should never do a hard prune like you are doing in the summer months. It weakens the plant and leaves it open for disease. I’m in zone 10a and we only dead head and remove diseased growth in the summer, never a hard prune. I have about thirty roses. I hope you don’t lose your roses. That would be sad. I’ve been a rose gardener for about thirty five years.
I’ve heard that as well and I’m sure that’s a good tip! But for the Queen of Elegance, it wa struggling already and did the same thing last year … a good prune last year helped it a lot. I’m not an expert but I’m just doing what has worked for me in the past … totally get that it’s not for everyone and for every situation.
Don't they have thorns? You handle those branches like they are thornless.
They do … my hands are pretty tough and I am careful where I grab the stems.
