  • Exploring the impact of Costa Rica’s pioneering efforts to prioritise environment over economic growth for its people.
    Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse nations on Earth. Its entire west coast is lined by the Pacific Ocean. The whole east coast borders the Atlantic. While this contributes to its stunning beauty, it also leaves Costa Rica particularly susceptible to the impact of climate change. With South America deemed to be the “second most vulnerable” part of the world, Costa Rica has been forced to confront the challenges this encompasses in a unique way. This is particularly evident in their unique approach to all that pertains to energy and its consumption as well as the preservation of its environment.
    The film, Nothing Grows Forever, looks at how Costa Rica has become a pioneer in the fight against climate change and how urban planning can be harnessed to benefit both humans and wildlife. In a world obsessed with economic growth, this film highlights how this small South American country is achieving high levels of wellbeing that have very little to do with money.

    This documentary is about the place where I am currently living @ Rancho Margot. Congratulations to the crew involved on the making. It was very well done 👍 it touched my heart ❤️
    You would say Costa Rica is the poorest country of the world because we have no fossil fuels, valued metals or minerals as the Woman on the video says, but actually it’s a blessing and I add my personal opinion here: it’s a blessing because that’s the main reason why we don’t need to have an army in CR.

      It's because we are the "apex" species, top of the tropic levels.
      A pyramid does not need the capstone to stand, the capstone can disappear and the pyramid will still stand, just like we can go extinct and there will be no problem, but if the rest of the biosphere is lost, there will be massive damage.
      The pyramid does not need the capstone to stand, the capstone needs the pyramid. 🜃

    This is a fascinating and enlightening documentary regarding nature's regenerative process and our involvement in it. We are indeed facing an environmental crisis with devastating impacts. Much respect to these environmentalists whose dedication, commitment and contributions have brought much awareness to the world. To envision life without nature's bounty to sustain our ecosystem and survival is truly dismaying.

    I believe fundamentally, we Humans have a conflict of belief.
    One side believes that there is this One Life world and that we should strive to achieve and acquire and experience as much as we can before we die.
    One other side, believes that there is this ONE World Life and that we should strive to understand and support the World and the species and humanity in a cooperative and regenerative experience regardless of when we die. Because when we die, we are replaced by someone or something else. Life continues on, just not in our particular form.
    In the One Life world, there is further teachings that each Human only, has his own soul and that soul is to be rewarded with a paradise experience after the death of the body.
    In the ONE World life, there is further teachings that all life shares one eternal soul, that permeates through all living things and is NOT the domain exclusively of Humans, but is even present in the Earth too.
    Finally, in the One Life World, we have a belief that God exists but is separate from Humanity and Nature, though God created Humanity and Nature.
    And in the One World life belief system, God is us all, all living things and the Earth are all God and Paradise is here now, not some post life experience for the soul of Humans to enjoy.
    Paradise is the domain of God. And all Creation is God.
    I believe regardless of which is true or maybe neither are, the Unifying Concepts of a One World Life belief system is preferable because it is cooperative and unifying. It removes the need for competition and thus the chances for excess behavior to lead to resource depletion and then famine, disease and war and collapse.

    I loved that classroom. The girl in the back, gave a very succinct and accurate explanation of the need for pollinators in the fertilization of plants to produce seed for plant reproduction.
    The rest sort of chewed on their pencils and squirmed as she talked. I have heard that about seven percent of the human population globally is exceptionally intelligent. Counting the instructor and the seven pupils, she made that point pretty well. He was genuinely surprised at her explanation. She can teach the class.

      Not disagreeing with you but merely clarifying certain points:
      Children also do learn through a variety of ways. Some through Audio, Visually, Reading and others from actual direct experience.
      Ages in the classroom also do matter. Just a month ahead in the same classroom, is of vast difference. “Intelligence” is also not confined or defined to the classroom and certainly is not consciousness.
      Between the gardener whom we generally assume is of “lower IQ” due to his/her “lower social position”, to this specific author ✍️ is of greater value and has more intellect than the CEOs and Trillionaires-to-be-Owners of this platform We are both on, as I’m sure you would equally agree; being that you are quite evidently consciously attuned by having chosen to watch this doc series instead of the other degenerate garbage plentifully out there.

    • @whatabouttheearth
      @whatabouttheearth 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was not the invention of "money" that was the problem, "money" is just a representation of value in exchange. One, of the many problems, is the use of the economy to achieve increased gain, capital, which expands the preexisting tendency towards greed that causes further division. But that tendency of capital accumulation was only based on other exploitive, NON RECIPROCAL, extractions from others, such as surplus extraction under feudalisms and slaveries. The idea of non reciprocal increasing extraction from nature, coincided with the idea of non reciprocal extraction from the labor of other animals including humans.
      Money, be it currency, or salt, or any type of object that represents a set value of exchange, is merely a tool of barter.

    Ecclesiastes 3-
    To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:
    3:2 A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted;
    3:3 A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up;
    3:4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance;
    3:5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;
    3:6 A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away;
    3:7 A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak;
    3:8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.
    3:9 What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?
    3:10 I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.
    3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.
    3:12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,
    3:13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor-it is the gift of God.
    3:14 I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.
    3:15 That which is has already been, And what is to be has already been; And God requires an account of what is past.
    3:16 Moreover I saw under the sun: In the place of judgment, Wickedness was there; And in the place of righteousness, Iniquity was there.
    3:17 I said in my heart, “God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, For there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.”
    3:18 I said in my heart, “Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals.”
    3:19 For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.
    3:20 All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.
    3:21 Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth?[a]
    3:22 So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

    The work that you are doing is the finest example of ecology and the balance of nature. Literally the balance of life. What would concern me however is if a 100 people should arrive, a 1000 etc. all seeking food, water, etc. With the increasing population we could not maintain the demand for resources and the consequences of this. Now it seems that we are concerned about an increase in an aging population and a drop in the birth rate. This seems to me to bring a whole new set of problems. I would so much like to know where we go from here.

    We are actually much poorer than we were 100 years ago. We make more money, but it buys so much less. Eventually the currency will need to be revalued because we will start to have to carry around 1000 dollar notes to buy food.
    And once the currency becomes worthless, because we are just working for some huge number that buys nothing eventually we will see that we are poorer.

    The evolution of the meme of human dominion over the earth, began within the bronze age. The hubris of this idea should have died with the bronze age collapse, but instead, it found a form in the early monotheistic writings. It is so indoctrinated into our society we cannot even begin to think our way out of it. We talk of escape from our fate into the cosmos even as we know that is not possible. We learn to survive with our planet or die with it.

    Rewilding will come whether we plan for it or we fall into it.
    We can go on the way we are going, and when the food and water supply collapses, we will collapse with it. Then there will be rewilding. You can see it as an accident in the Rust Belt of the US. Go to Detroit, or Cleveland.
    Whole parts of the city are dead and slowly going back to nature. It's just like those Ghost Towns in the Desert Southwest after the Silver mines stopped producing.
    It's how we operate. We consume like bacteria on a Petri dish. We expand outward until all the nutrient broth is consumed. Then the growth stops.

    I do hope that the trend to educate girls and women will drive a more thoughtful and deliberate humanity that chooses to self limit it's population. I do believe we will be fine with two billion Humans globally in the world in 60 years. What would be so bad? We can plan and adjust our attitudes deliberately.

    “must learn to coexist with nature” better to sit grown men in that classroom make sure they understand they have too much, as teaching kids who are only going to grow up working for conglomerates that are encroaching on their territory is redundant

      The age in which girls are going into puberty is getting younger and younger, which is not a good sign. Also recently they found microplastics in the male testes. Coupled with how hard it's been for people to get pregnant without technology, I think it's fair to say the signs are everywhere.

    Indeed, Allah is the One Who causes seeds & fruit stones to sprout. He brings forth the living from the dead & the dead from the living. That is Allah! How can you then be deluded ˹from the truth˺? (al Anaam6:95)

    We are the "apex" species, top of the tropic levels.
    🜃
    We are literally the earth. All the elements that your body is composed of derives from the food you eat and water you drink. Before those elements were in the plants/animals you ate and the water you drank they were processing through the biogeochemical cycles and the hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere and biosphere many many times over. And the elements that are right now on mountains and soon to be weathered off, and in the rain clouds soon to fall on the soil or in water to be taken up by plants and animals, will one day be in another human, possibly you, again. We are literally the earth.
    And yes, we will destroy ourselves, but we will also destroy much of the biosphere and permanently change the hydrosphere and atmosphere moreso than we already have.
    We are already weakening the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current which risks breaking ocean currents overall and decimating ocean migrations. We are already harming many cyanobacteria based phytoplankton that provide half the oxygen we humans breath though photosythesis and are the primary producers of the ocean food web, the base of ocean trophic levels. We are already causing destruction, strain and phenological mismatch to the photosynthesizing plants here on land, and they too are the primary producers, the base of food webs and tropic relations here on land.
    We are already harming way more than we are being harmed and will continue to do so until we go extinct through starvation because we were too dumb to not destroy the tropic level relations. Or we can try to build a perception that is in balance with "nature", with what we know of Earth Systems Science.

    & ALLAH is the One Who sends down rain from the sky-causing all kinds of plants to grow-producing green stalks from which We bring forth clustered grain. & from palm trees come clusters of dates hanging within reach. ˹There are˺ also gardens of grapevines, olives, & pomegranates, similar ˹in shape˺ but dissimilar ˹in taste˺. Look at their fruit as it yields & ripens! Indeed, in these are signs for people who believe. (al Anaam6:99)
