Lost Futures: How greed is destroying our planet | Dying Earth: E1 | Featured Documentary

  • Some of the 'prophets of doom' of the 60s whose warnings went unheeded assess the current environmental fragility.
The effects of climate change were already being felt as far back as the 1960s, but scientists who linked fossil fuels with climate change were labelled “prophets of doom”.
This episode traces the trajectory of climate change over the past 60 years and examines how and why - despite the stark warnings - we failed to halt the climate catastrophe we are currently experiencing, and why it appears politics and science are at odds when it comes to this issue.
Years of propaganda and greed from oil companies created a world where profit trumped the health of the planet, the consequences of which are now being felt today.
Lost Futures explores the effects of corporate greed. In Louisiana, we see firsthand how small coastal towns will succumb to the devastating effects of years of drilling from oil companies, and what this means for a generation which has had little to do with causing the devastation but is forced to live with its consequences.

Money is necessary for a modern society. Exponential growth of the GDP not. Money isnt the core idea of capitalism. The core idea is private corporation with the central goal of making as much profit as possible.
And the funny thing is that even regions where capitalism is not that huge, like in the arabic states, making as much profit still has become the most important issue.
Even the so called "communist" country China is pure capitalistic for several decades now. Which means exponential GROWTH.
To say that its fault of the money that our society is driven by this profit idea is just not quite accurate.
Money is necessary that capitalism does work. But its not the cause of our problems.

I am 71, living in the U.K. My professional background was education and I.T. The main observation I now have, thinking about my life journey, is that government is not our friend. It used to be that governments engaged with voters and policy emerged from those in public service. Government is no longer a public service vocation, but a private profit model. In the U.K an MPs salary in 2024 is a minimum of £84,000. Compare that to the average wage in the U.K, and it's plain to see the massive disconnect. Uncontrolled Capitalism exploits people and all other Earth resources to drive profit for a small number of greedy individuals, who control the levers of power. No turkeys voting for christmas here.

The wages thing I'm not sure about. I'm a bit younger than you 63 and similarly in FE education. The thing that has struck me recently is the utter ineptitude of the people in charge, I've never wanted to be a manager so have just taught, but have observed the types of people that go for managers jobs. Almost exclusively they're not up to it, they have no background in management and the only difference is - like Johnson and the majority of the current cabinet members is... they are willing to take a risk and stick their heads above the parapet. They don't care if they might get shot down or fail, they're risk takers. They don't care about the consequences - they just move on leaving chaos potentially in their wake. The MP's wages are a conundrum, you might look at from the point of view that more money might attract the right kind of calibre of candidate, but then they'll settle in and do anything and say anything to maintain their job/position. But you're right - the day most people bought into Thatcher's there is no such thing as society and started the sell of our assets, was the day when it started to tip in the favour of the mega-rich. My own feeling is there needs to be a collective agreement that the population needs to decrease and the resources that exist already need to be re-used and recycled, the notion of 'Growth' needs to be re-looked at re-thought. We need to expect to live simpler lives far more in harmony with the planet.

Population decrease is the last thing we need. We have plenty of resources for an expanding global population. This is a matter of not caring for each other like we should. We're confused as to whether the poor guy deserves to be poor or is he just not trying hard enough. That poor guy is left behind because the rest of us are inundated with the things it takes to make ends meet. I live in Louisiana. This documentary is melodramatic. This kid, with his "chronic anxiety disorder" is simply uneducated. Proper education is the key to a solid underlying foundation of any society. I have noticed, through my journey, how our society actively makes sure that the underprivileged remain uneducated. This is the biggest mistake we could possibly make.@someblokecalleddave1

Thank you so much for presenting this video. With this climate catastrophe, I can barely eat or sleep. My heart breaks. I'm not concerned about myself because I'm in my mid-sixties. What plays on my mind are the babies being born all over the world. They will live through the utter devastation that will come more quickly than most people believe. The little kids will live through this. The teenagers and young adults are completely aware that their world is being destroyed. Yet, no one will do what is required to stop this climate emergency. Not enough people have spoken up. Scientists can't speak out. Our world is coming to the end but there is still the greed of the oil companies.
All of the major oil company executives were told that climate change would occur if fossil fuels continued to be used. Edward Teller, a physicist who worked with J. Robert Oppenheimer, told them this in 1959. They hid the fact that they knew and they lied. They still lie.
Studies have been done that showed that many business leaders are psychopaths. The heads of the oil companies are psychopaths. What they have done is crimes against humanity. Yet, they have no concern for what they have caused. They have no concern for the millions of people who will die because of their actions. They have no conscience. Their selfish greed is all that they care about. That is psychopathy.
We actually need to prepare for the worst to come much sooner than 100 years from now or even 50 years from now. It could be anytime. On January 23, 2023, a 1,550 square kilometer iceberg broke off the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica. The temperatures at the poles are increasing more than in other parts of the earth and they are increasing exponentially. Absolute devastation will come very soon. I know because, although scientists are not allowed to speak out, they do report their findings in peer-reviewed journals. I have studied these journals.
At some point soon, the doomsday glacier, the Thwaites Glacier, will break free from the Antarctic. When this happens, millions of gallons of water will come rushing out. This will raise sea levels by 2 feet and will stop the jet stream which will bring about the next ice age. But this glacier isn't the only one. In both the Arctic and the Antarctic, glaciers are melting quickly. When most have melted, sea levels will rise by 100 feet or more. Some scientists have stated that our future Great Flood will be worse than 11,000 years ago. It will be as bad as 200,000 years ago. This will entirely flood many areas of the world. It will devastate the earth because many cities are located on or near coastlines. Meanwhile, people will keep dying from extreme heat, fires and powerful storms.
All of this frightens me. Yet, I don't know what I or anyone else can do to stop this. As you reported, politicians receive money from the oil companies. They, too, are committing crimes against humanity because they are aiding and abetting the oil companies.
Even though we are supposedly heading toward tipping points, I know that we have already reached the point of no return. We have already exceeded the tipping points. Yet, the psychopathic oil executives still lie. They do pay unscrupulous scientists to report that fossil fuels are not impacting the earth. I am absolutely sick to see such evil being played out. They are no different than psychopathic serial killers. They are just as heinous with the exception that they are murdering many more people than the worst serial killers in history.

It's spring where I am. Usually it's an average of 50s-70s with Higgs getting into the 80s. This spring it went straight from a freeze to within a week reaching almost 90. Snow is melting faster than local experts and ski resorts expected just weeks after saying "resorts will stay open well into the summer". I think they've done enough here with prescribed burns to lessen the wildfire impact, but it's still going to be an intensely hot summer if it's just now spring and we are already consistently pushing to touch 90. Still glad I live where we actually get all 4 seasons, but spring is becoming much shorter.

He is indicative in that even though he sees and experiences the destruction, he chooses not only to not leave, but also participates in the very industry that drives the ecosystem destruction. I lived in this area my whole life. I took the military route out of that hole. Many of the Cajuns who live in the area are wealthy from the oil industry and energy blind. The problem we have now is not that we are consuming and using fuel for NEEDS, but we, the world, are consuming and using for DESIRES; endless desires for pleasure and to impress others. We eat, use, and waste so much that we are destroying the earth in that process. Some call it progress; some call it a good life; some call it that's what we're supposed to do. Nope! Instead, we should all live a low foot print and low consumption lifestyle. Don't waste resources and don't keep buying new stuff after stuff! Like less oil workers less oil.
But you simply having that 1 oil pump you have effectively made your personal co2 footprint almost 8x more then a normal household with a family of 5.
Also if that 1 house with 5 people have a garden and do it as organically as possible and have it provid lots of food that can reduce there co2 footprint and save lots of money and reducing the amount of food a store will need to provide with also can reduce co2 as less farm land will be needed so less chemicals can be used.
Yes 1 family can't do all that but when multiple people from around the world end up doing thus it can end up in the millions doing it wich will make an impact on the system as a whole.

This Young Man was right from his own perspective! Our earth is changing, do to all the extracting from below the earths crust. All the infrastructures that are built on the earths crust, come from below the ground! The crust humans live on is1,802 miles thick. Below the crust is the Earth's mantle, which is the layer of the planet, that lies between the crust and the middle of the planet, called the core which is 10,800 degrees. The mantle is very hot, with temperatures ranging from about 227 C (440 F) at the upper boundary with the crust to about 3,930 C (7,100 degrees F) at the core mantle. The mantle under the ocean is even hotter than previously thought, by about 60 C (110 degrees F) The earth has about 82 mineral which governments rely on for trillions of dollars in trade, a round the planet. Massive tunneling, massive voids where oil, natural gas, coal, gold, silver, iron, and so on the earth produces, which a thinner crust is developing, where heat rises faster to where people live! North Pole's Artic Ice is melting faster because of the amount of oil taking from below. The Earth is a living organism (which is alive) and is made up of water, like our bodies 96% water, 4% dust!

Unfortunately, the most prudent thing to do now is to begin to adapt to a 2-2.5C warmer world. Modern civilization runs on fossil fuels and even needs fossil fuels to manufacture, distribute and install renewable energy systems. We can't shut off the flow without crashing global civilization itself. At some deeper level, we all know this and that's why the masses aren't protesting seriously in the streets - and why politicians, bankers, hedge fund managers and CEO's aren't going to do anything impactful either.
Basically, we're all passengers or crew on the Titanic, but we know already that we're going to hit that iceberg sometime soon. Best to get a spot on a lifeboat or cobble together something that can float. The rest will either go down with the ship or expire in the merciless ocean. Momentum... too much momentum to stop in time. The outcome is obvious & inevitable.
