  • ”A refreshing perspective on what it means to be wealthy” - Don Smith, Kiss the Ground
In the documentary ”Into the Soil” we follow Brigid LeFevre, who runs a community supported agriculture operation (CSO) in Järna, Sweden. In her biodynamic vegetable garden she focuses on fermenting the harvest in order to enrich it with nutritious lactic acid bacteria.
Brigid grew up in an anthroposophically inspired Camphill community in Northern Ireland where volunteers lived and worked together with people with special needs. It was a self-sufficient community where the local store brought in bulk organic produce and each household would write down their purchases - without any actual exchange of money.
Growing up in a place where food was separated from the economic market has had a big impact on Brigid’s philosophy as a farmer. And really, come to think about it, why is it that the global ups and downs of the economy should determine the operating practices of small scale local farms?
In Brigid’s garden it doesn’t. She grows and ferments vegetables for the members, who subscribe to her sauerkraut, kimchi and lacto fermented pickles, all year round. The members support this regenerative agriculture operation with money or hands-on help in the garden.
It’s a local, circular economy, which underpins an alive garden, buzzing and chirping, where the goal isn’t to turn a profit, but rather to make the soil more alive with the passing of each season.
Directed and produced by Mattias Olsson for Campfire Stories. Musical score composed by Arvid Rask. Sound design by Boris Laible and Jonas Källstrand. Financed in part by the Namaste Foundation.

it went terribly wrong for us. I regret it actually. We had a wonderful project and put in a tonne of work but wrecked our health .. most of my permaculture , self sufficiency friends lived sickly lives of rural poverty. we all started out optimistic tho. even those with huge amounts of money behind them became sickly .. Camphill was floundering last time i checked .. as is the whole steiner movement. they had no nerve to stand up to covid tyranny either sadly :(

The word ”förädlad” has two components to it: ”för”, meaning for or to make, and ”ädla” which has to do with nobless, noble values, higher state, but also deliciousness and valuable… It is such a perfect word.

I cannot explain how much I love this film. I want to live where she grew up. Especially when she said the food should not be in the realm of the economic market is so true. Personally, I think the only reason food is controlled by the economic market is that the government want to be in control and wants US to rely on THEM. If we came toegther, and created small communities that rely on each other is what needs to happen to create a better life and healthier enviroment. This is what needs to happen to live a happier life.

Ah this is pure idealistic horse shit. How does this translate to a city like London, Tokyo or Singapore? Are they all to starve because a few people with hippy ideologies don’t want huge production. And I am a no till, regenerative grower in Ireland. Nothing wrong with doing it for yourself but are all the farmers to feed the cities for free? Idealistic nonsense I fear

Exactly, and the government certainly do not want people living in communities growing their own food and self sufficient. Here in Australia, councils make it very difficult to establish Multiple Occupancies.. they are actively abolishing land sharing legislation. They want most people in the cities where they are easier to control. I left the city early last year and live in the bush, but unfortunately there's no health centred community here.

Thank you for giving me hope. Twenty-five years working on building up the wildlife ecosystem on part of my property was destroyed by the Canadian Trans Mountain Pipeline (for their temporary workspace) in less than 4 years. Just got a call from their rep who wants to remove the livestock protective fencing in order to destroy more of my property in order to "conveniently" carry out their "restorative" program. I refused. In another year they should be gone, and at the age of 69, I will start again. Thank you for giving me the will to do so.

@@mythtree6348our specific approach might have, but as we see with 3.5 billion years of nature, the systems work. Just need to know how to remove ones self from the product/consumerism mindset and work with nature not against. I recommended Dr. Elaine Ingham, Dan Kittredge, Gabe Brown, Nicole Masters and Dr. Christine Jones to learn the appropriate methods and grow yourself to be ready for the natural farming journey. Managing the farm means nothing of the farmer isn't understanding the core concepts of soil caretaking

I love this. I'm halfway through your film, I have to comment how much I appreciate Brigid's comment that "I make a good living". From my place in the US, working a job 9-5, there's such an economic pressure on me and my peers to work so we can pay rent. It make's it hard to imagine living this way. I bet her quality of life is better than me. She seems quite happy here, and proud of her foradlad farm. Thank you for this documentary.

I love the way she thinks, it feels much more true than the ways of thinking we are taught. And I love that she indirectly mentioned the fae because I truly believe there is truth in faeries. Perhaps if we acknowledged them more we would all have a deeper connection with nature.

What an inspirational story of Regenerative agriculture from a young lady. I can't stop watching more and more people jumping onto this bandwagon of farming that holds the potential to sustain life on Earth while making food production more healthy for its people and the environment. Please keep going. :)

We had a Camphill in upstate NY. Us girls were able to go to school at Hawthorne Valley near by. At least for a few years. Id give anything to be able to be a part of that community again. Im crying watching this with how badly i feel like ive wasted my life. Im in the process of trying to introduce pollinator plants and food plants to our very sandy soil. Its the only work i feel is worthy at this point. I mean, besides my rescue cats. Thank you🐝🐞🌱🌻

@Mattias, thank you for this beautiful and uplifting documentary. It is such an encouragement to both heart and mind, and comes at a wonderful time for me. Instant Like and Subscribe!. @Brigid, thank you for your beautiful embodiment, and reminder, of Donna Haraway’s “Staying with the Trouble”. You gave me new and deep insight into what that is all about, with your emphasis on the ferment (and the terrifying but delicious cheese mold!, too) that is feeding all of us. And our so beautiful ability to participate in creating welcoming spaces for amazing new and “other” wonder-ful and Well-thy life to feed and be fed.

Wonderful what you are doing and saying sister. I am not a farmer or growing anything out of soil but think similarly about what you said about not doing really the fermenting or growing. That it manifests or happen on its won. I feel same about most of the activities i am into. Being an architect helping a design for a place to actualize or a cook in my house cooking for myself or bunch of friends, it happens on its won. i.e. in cooking the fire does the most of the thing while i cut some vegetables or stir in the pot. Same goes for being an architect. Its a wonderful feeling leaving you out of the responsibility in some sense and rather being some one who is in wonder before the whole happening.
    Thanks for expressing this.
