Bees Vs Spray Foam "No Contest!"

  • The title of this video says it all folks. Spray foam is no match for honey bees, they will chew right through it, no problem!
This is a rental property & according to the tenants, the bees were there when they moved in.
I was told that the previous tenants did not inform the landlord the building had bees & it appears someone used at least a few cans of spray foam to try to either seal the bees in or keep them out of the structure.
Either way, the bees just chewed right through the foam like a hot knife through butter.
At first the colony was very defensive but smoking them changed their intentions quickly!
The tenant informed me that he used approximately $100.00 worth of chemicals (there was a fogger in the yard) to try to eradicate the bees, as they would sting him when he cut the grass.
Even though the colony appeared healthy, I decided not to utilize any of the comb sections or honey from the hive for fear of any pesticide contamination issues.
The colony is thriving now in Gonzales, Louisiana on 3,000 acres of swamp land with plenty of flowers, water & zero spray foam.

This is a classic example of why property owners of rental properties need to do semi-annual property inspections. It looks to me like the landlord needs to invest some money into the property while they still have a property worth repairing. Contrary to popular belief "Spay-Foam" is not waterproof but rather an excellent absorber of rain water and moisture which in turns makes a great place for mold and mildew to form and in turn promotes rot which of course attracts termites, ants, and all sorts of creepy crawling critters.

My sisters apartment was a shack with several additions poorly added on. The luandry room dumped the water under the house. The gutters soffets and fasica was missing and the gutters were pouring water into the house. The landlord never came to see the damage and never listened to our warnings. Also there was alot of visable mold.

@@JPthebeeman Yessir! That's why I was thanking you! I appreciate you calling 'em Feral instead of Wild for that exact reason, I know it's a small thing, but it's one I really appreciate.
On that note, perhaps this fall, d'you think you'd have any interest in doing a small video on bee houses for solitary bees and how the average person can make them even without many tools? I'm sure there're a lot of viewers who love bees but don't have the space, time, energy, or temperament to house full hives, but would love setting up a bee house for their local solitary bees to safely brood in.

slavkei we don’t have many solitary bees where I’m located other than ones most people would find undesirable such as carpenter bees. If we had Mason bees I’d be all over your suggestion as I think they’re really super cool friendly & interesting bees. Stingless bees are actually really cool too, know a guy in Australia who keeps them.

This was an awesome video and actually rather touching as my father was a beekeeper. I so miss the honey his bees would produce! He'd plant buckwheat for the dark honey and had certain hives near clover for the light stuff. )

I would be surprised if that actually had to pass a building inspection, or if it did, that the inspector wasn't on the take.
