      I like Luis Guzman but his acting in the count of monte cristo was the worst I’ve ever seen in a real movie. It rivals Tommy Wiseau and may actually be worse. I love that movie but those scenes with Guzman, every time he is speaking is just terrible.

    • @dannykent6190
      @dannykent6190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think his acting was bad in Monte Cristo. It was just that his character had a very different vibe that didn't fit with the darkness of rest of the movie... personally, it's about the only part of the film I liked.

    • @johnmorris8444
      @johnmorris8444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dannykent6190 I feel like he improvised all his lines because they didn’t match the film at all. “We’ll go down to Paris, bam bam bam bam…… how is this a bad plan?” And the “I swear on all my dead relatives, even the ones that aren’t feeling so well…” these lines give me second hand embarrassment like nothing else I have ever experienced in life.

    This is one of my favorite movies of all time. On one hand it's hyper stylized in it's direction and fast paced in it's editing. The combination of music, humor, and fantastic acting keep your eyes glued to the screen. And yet somehow despite this it's also able to make every character feel like a believable and well rounded human being with naturalistic and real dialogue. Their stories don't come across like melodramatic fluff, even at their lowest point you feel invested in them. All and all there's just nothing to truly dislike about the movie, every aspect of it goes so well together to create this masterpiece.

    This is what Mark Wahlberg is so good at. Hes like the serviceable central actor that you can build a movie around, and let the supporting cast bring the flavor. He's not going to mess up the story, and he'll provide a character that the viewer can project their own feelings on. Not every actor can be an oscar winner, but its also important to have actors that keep the story moving, and Wahlberg does that really well.

    • @Theomite

      I actually think he does extreme performances really well. He did FEAR the year before which really stood out, and he does ridiculous comedy like TED very well too. His real personality is very dour and stoic and when he plays characters like that, I don't see the "acting." But in movies like this, we see his chops at work.

Then it became the Reseda Country Club in the 1980s where I saw 100s of great metal and rock concerts like Metallica in their early club days. I hear it's a church nowadays. If you like this movie, something I cannot recommend enough is HBO's "The Deuce" from David Simon, creator of "The Wire"
    "The Deuce" is about the sex trade in Time Square in the 70's and 80's and how the porn industry evolved out of it. It's three seasons and the show takes the novel approach of fast forwarding six years between seasons, showing us the characters and their lives first in 1971, then 77, then 84. Starring James Franco and Maggie Gylenhall in some career high performances.

    You asked about if people avoided watching Boogie Nights because of the subject matter. The answer, unfortunately, was a resounding "yes". It only took in $43 million worldwide at the box office, which isn't terrible against its budget but certainly didn't make it a huge hit; in fact, it ranked just 56th for the year, behind such "classics" as Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Volcano, and Speed 2: Cruise Control. Once word of mouth starting circulating, the awards nominations began rolling in, and especially after its release on home video, it started to find a wider audience.
    Boogie Nights holds up so well even 25 years later, and my God what a job casting this thing! The drug deal/firecrackers scene ranks right up there among the best ever put onto film (or video tape).
    Thank you for reacting to this one. I know it couldn't have been easy editing it for TH-cam!

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman brought the goods every time he was in front of the camera. Even in Twister. His villain in Mission Impossible 3 had such an intensity at times and he could convey it without raising his voice. Then when he did it meant something and it was kind of scary.

    There’s a longer version of ambers documentary that exists, it was cut down for the film. In it John C. Riley talks about how it’s possible to block a bullet with a nunchuck, it’s one of the funniest 30 seconds you will ever see.

    The scenes cut from the movie were pretty good to. John C Reilly dancing in the recording booth is the funniest cut scene. If you noticed in the award ceremony scenes Philip Seymor Hoffman tried to give him a high five and he kept on getting ignored by Mark Walberg's character.

    More trivia:
    1. The song that Dirk was recording is a real song called You Got The Touch by Stan Bush. It's on the 1986 animated Transformers movie soundtrack.
    2. Jessie's Girl has a sequel by Coheed and Cambria and features a verse sung by Rick Springfield.

    I saw this in the theaters and I had a blast watching it from beginning to end. Whenever I hear any song from the movie on the radio, I always think of whatever scene it was from. I was on pins and needles during the firecracker scene. I've probably seen it close to 100 times by now. What a great film.

    Structurally, this is very similar to GoodFellas -- we're shown a good times golden age of something that when some major change comes along (the rise of the drug business in GoodFellas and the rising prevalence of video tape in Boogie Nights), everything goes to hell and the good times are over. Except Boogie Nights has what you could call a happier ending.

    • @RichardDicksondlyrch68
      @RichardDicksondlyrch68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The scene where Dirk goes to Jack and asks for help is a direct mirror of when Henry goes to Paulie. Except whereas the Boogie Nights characters really do form a family, there is NO loyalty in GoodFellas.

    • @mikeminer1947
      @mikeminer1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichardDicksondlyrch68 DAMN you are so right! I've made the Raging Bull connection and the zoom-ins between this and Goodfellas where characters are doing coke, but I never connected the "apology" scene! I've seen both these movies so many times, I had to go back to watch the Goodfellas scene to make sure Henry wasn't fumbling with his sunglasses like Dirk, but no, he isn't. Great call!

    I saw this in the theater. The sound cut out at the beginning during that long shot, so instead of complaining to the staff, I just sat in my seat and watched the next screening, all over again.
    The first audience was mainly older, and pretty quiet. The second audience was younger, and GASPED when Scottie tried to kiss Dirk!

  • @Theomite

    I saw this in theaters; it was one of the first R-rated films I could actually get in to see. I remember being slightly put-off by how much like GOODFELLAS it seemed. But I've always loved it anyway; that energy is just so difficult to capture in a film but it's invigorating.
    Reynolds admitted the year before he died that he thought the film was excellent, but he didn't like working with PTA. Previous interviews with him where he recounts PTA commenting on intentionally breaking the 4th wall as if Reynolds didn't already know what it was and PTA struck him as a brash, arrogant youth.
    Ron Jeremy recounted in his autobiography about Julianne Moore and another actor visiting a set of one of his movies for research and the scene didn't go quite as planned but the actors reluctantly stayed on until they wrapped and then quickly left. Any of the other adult performers were instructed not to talk about porn around Burt Reynolds, who clearly had issues with the subject matter beyond his friction with PTA. But Burt did like to talk about sports, apparently.
    Interesting note about how illegal it was to shoot porn at the time: Jeremy also mentioned how, in the 80s when Reagan created the Meese Commission to basically destroy the porn industry, that they were frequently raided by the FBI despite taking numerous spy movie precautions to avoid detection. After being raided by the same agents multiple times--one occasion on Lake Tahoe with a fleet of zodiac boats--he found out that the Meese Commission hired actual counter-terrorism and intelligence operatives (some of whom were ex-Mossad) to run the surveillance ops on the cast & crews. This is why they kept getting busted: they were trying to evade professional spy hunters the government tasked with tracking them.
    Tarantino has accused PTA of basing Jack Horner on Gerard Damiano, a famous porn director of the period due to his distinct salt-and-pepper Van Dyke beard, which Burt Reynolds dis not actually have. He also said that Damiano was a better director than Horner, based on his time working in a porn theater before making RESERVOIR DOGS. I agree with Tarantino.

    One of my favorite reactions to one of my favorite movies. One thing that wasn't mentioned anywhere in the trivia was Jack seeing himself as an artist when he was clearly just making trashy movies. To me that says something about what happens when you pursue a dream that is all of your own creation.

    For me this may be the best thing PTA has ever done. There are so many stories could be told about the "other" Hollywood, and this is one of the very few movies that does it well - but it's not even really about that, it's about family, how we lose it and how even the most screwed up people can find it again. And that dark turn, perfectly done.
    And an amazing comeback for Burt Reynolds. I've always liked him, grew up watching him in stuff like Smokey and the Bandit where he's just effortlessly charming and funny... but the old guy could do drama too, and that was long forgotten.
