My husband and I (Minnesotans) saw Fargo in the theater and couldn't stop laughing on our way home because we kept hearing our own accents and colloquialisms while talking about the film. It made us aware of it. I'd always assumed we didn't have a regional accent. Little did I know. I have to add that the topography of Minnesota is really varied and stunning. So much more than flat farm fields. Beautiful state.
@@meanangel8114 We have four seasons, to be sure. Lots of people look forward to winter for the skiing (downhill & X-country), snowboarding, mushing, snowmobiling, skating, hockey, ice fishing, etc. Fall is my favorite season.
I’m glad to hear that. At the time, a lot of Minnesotans at the time of the movie’s release were offended by the “exaggerated” accents, but I think most people assumed it was exaggerated to some degree for comedic effect and could only be done in that way by people who are from there like the Coen Brothers were.
LOVE THE TRIVIA! DONT EVER GET RID OF IT! That is something that sets you apart from others in this TH-camrverse. The Mike scene also has the effect of Marge discovering that she can be tricked if she feels sympathy for the person tricking her. After she finds out Mike lied to her, she goes right back to Jerry.
Ya, I originally had to hear that from someone else. B4 that, I always thought it was kind of 'off', the whole Mike scene. It didn't seem relevant to the movie... BUT, that explanation does make sense
Peter Stormare, a Swede, said that Minnesota was more Swedish than Sweden. He went into a number of restaurants that displayed the Swedish flag and pictures of the King and Queen.
Well, he kind of meant the opposite... we never have flags unless there's a national holiday or a birthdays. And most people that bother with a picture of the Knig (not a misspelling :P) have it on the wall in the bathroom. :)
I recently heard that when American soldiers moved into Germany in 1945, they found it to be much less foreign and more like home than the Netherlands, France, and even England. Would make sense with all the German immigrants that had gone to America just one or two generations earlier. (A lot more than even English immigrants.)
Garrison Keillor once noted that many Swedes settled in Minnesota because it reminded them of their homeland. Then they realized that was why they left there in the first place.
@@edwardthorne9875 Minnesota got the highest density of Swedish migrants to the US. This with some spillover to neighbor states, they were not that concerned about the actual state borders.

Adore this movie. Really appreciate that you do the trivia bit at the end of each reaction. It’s a great way to learn more about the films. I actually wish more reactors would do stuff like that. A couple of things about Fargo that are cool to know as well: the actress who played the wife of William H. Macy isn’t the same woman who has a hood on her head in the rest of the film. That’s an extra since it cost less money to pay an extra to wear a sheet on their head. Also, there’s one distinct parking lot scene where you can see no snow in the distance since they used artificial snow in most scenes. Just a slip-up on their part.
A pretty cool piece of Coen Bros trivia is that because they had Buscemi’s character doing all the talking in Fargo, that when Steve was cast in Lebowski the script called for Goodman’s character to always tell Buscemi to “Shut the f*^k up!”

Luckily he is the most prepared hiker/biker/camper ever. Afterwards he said he still had a couple pieces of clothing that he hadn't used yet, but some of the other people were hurting. And they were filming this movie at the same time. What a hoot! Oh, he didn't actually know how cold it was because their thermometer stopped at -30F - probably a mercury one. As a native Minnesotan, I love this movie. The accents are exaggerated for the cities, but you can certainly find them on the Iron Range. The music is just... right in the feels. It's really a classic movie.
So glad to see this. Fargo is one of my favorite films of all time. Such a great dark comedy. Some of the funniest scenes in film history-my favorites being the snow shoveling conversation and meeting the old classmate. My dad and I consistently quote this movie.
Peter Stormare plays in a band called "Blonde from Fargo" named after his role in this movie. At one point Peter Stormare was talking to a director about a part in a movie and the director asked him if he would be able to give a performance similar to that blonde guy from Fargo, not knowing that it was Stormare who had played that role. Stormares reply was simply no, that would be too hard for him.
At the end talking about teaching them to speak Minnesotan, I couldn't help thinking of the same situation Kate Winslet went though trying to get a particular dialect of Pennsylvania. She does a wonderful crack up of SNL doing a take on her.
Hey Shan. Minnesota nice is a real thing. Born and raised. The accents and phrases are obviously over the top which kind of pissed a lot of people off. But I found it hilarious. Being born and raised in Minnesota but my dad from Indiana and my mom from Michigan. I don't have a heavy Minnesota accent. But I hear it in everybody else. Oh yeah, geez it's there when they talk. That was fun. And keep the trivia I don't even know why that's an issue. It's interesting and it totally separates you from other reactors. As always you're awesome. So yeah, we'll see you next time then ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
Same here. William Hurt was one of my faves. He delivered some of my favorite performances of all time in ‘The Big Chill’, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ ‘Broadcast News,’ and ‘The Accidental Tourist.’ R.I.P. to the great thespian.
This is a Minnesota accent, not midwest. The midwest accent is more generic and is considered the closest to a stereotypical American accent. It's therefore what gets chosen for many of the nationwide newscasters and journalists.
OMG! As much as you love Frances McDormand, you must watch her in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She won Best Actress Oscar for this performance....... as well as this movie and Nomadland. She plays a very intense character in Three Billboards. One of my top ten movies ever.
I first watched it in film appreciation class in about 2004. The fact that it was on laser disc and projected in the theater sized lecture hall added to cinematic experience.
Saw it in the theaters and it's an enduring favorite for myself, friends, family and all the other Michiganders in my life. I think you nail it as far as how the lurid story contrasts with the chipper mundanity. I love the Coens and this is maybe their best.
Seems like many Coen Brothers movies utilize heavy regional accents and have the films' locations act as supporting characters, in a way. Fantastic storytelling!
Fargo is a great movie to watch with Roger Deakins' commentary on. Tons of really subtle things that really sell the film that you hardly notice, but are clearly there when pointed out.
Great movie! Great reaction! We recently lost one of the truly amazing actors. William Hurt had an incredible career. I wanted to suggest that you react to one of his movies to honor his life. I would suggest the amazing drama Children of a Lesser God (1986), the comedy/drama/romance Broadcast News (1987), the crime/detective thriller Gorky Park (1983) that takes place in Cold War Soviet Union, or The Big Chill (1983), the movie that really defined a generation. You can’t wrong with these or any of his films.
My friend and I are from Minnesota. We watched it at the movie theater she managed. She was all offended. “We don’t talk like that!” “Actually, we do. “
lol it surely is our accent, it's just not as strong with most people anymore. Gotta go up North to find people with accents as strong as the movie implies. But since so many of us are Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish, that accent (which is basically just how people from those countries sound speaking English) will always probably be somewhat present!
Not long after this came out, there was a store in the mall (Spencer's), where you could buy a snow globe of her throwing up next to the bloody car wreck.
Nominated for 7 Oscars including Best Picture, but won for Best Actress Frances McDormand and Best Original Screenplay. The English Patient Won Best Picture and Best Director, as well as 7 other Oscars.
I did ❤ the movie, the English Patient tho... nobody ever talks about it, and nobody's ever reacted to it.... just saying... it'd b a good reaction movie! ... and yes, it did love Fargo as well
Saw it in the theatre when it came to Sweden back in '96. First time I remember seeing Peter Stormare (who's Swedish) in anything. He's been in lots of stuff since then. Absolutely loved it.
I was so excited to see this come up! This was my mom's favorite movie. :) My mom and I were born in Wisconsin and my "home" accent is very close to this, lol. I can fall into it so easily. Watching this made me miss my mom so much.
Burn After Reading is my favorite Coen Bros. movie. It actually has a somewhat similar plot to Fargo, though more generally comedic. Frances McDormand is utterly hysterical. As is George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and John Malkovich, in particular.
I have watched a few of your reactions in the last few days. I wondered why do I recognize her. Remembered your face and said "oh ya she's cool" from about 4 months ago. U popped up on my feed and now I am subscribing cutie pie...lol
I'm glad to see that you were sceptical right away when you saw that "true story" opening. Some reactors get extremely upset when the bodies start piling up.
I grew up in a rural area with lots of farmland. It really does get like that in the winter. Just a flat, white void in every direction. No protection from the wind, so snow is blowing in front of you, all over the road, and it keeps pushing your vehicle, so you're constantly compensating for that. Luckily it's also a perfectly straight, very level stretch of road, but it could be terrifying in the winter.
I always enjoy the trivia segments in your videos. I'm not too far into the video, but if you haven't seen 'No Country for Old Men,' it's really good. Good review so far.
Roger Deakins did the cinematography on Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou. He was the cinematographer on a lot of Coen Bros movies including No Country For Old Men
Very nice reaction video. You notice the same things in movies i do. Like the one shot on that empty parking lot to not mess up the snow and so on. :) Cheers.
As computer programmers we often use code names for projects while they are in development. One extensive data processing application I worked on took in data from a variety of sources and created a single stream of combined data to be inserted into a massive database. It's code name was "Trapper." But as often happens last minute changes were demanded and the single stream became first a handful and then a dozen or more streams of data coming out the bottom of the process. After seeing the movie _Fargo_ one of the programmers noted that our clean and efficient application had become a "bloody mess" much like the wood chipper from the movie. After that the development team began to refer to the project as "Chipper."
For some reason the style of this movie always reminds me of an old detective mini movie series called "Columbo". Just that knowing the criminal in advance, affable sleuth, criminal slipping up, etc etc etc. Good series if you ever have the time!
Yoo I'm a shameless skank for the trivia lol fun fact Steve's character donny in the big lebowski was always told to "shut the phuck up donny" by Walter to balance out how he never shut up in this lol
I love this movie. I remember telling on of my cousins to watch it, but she didn't get it at all. She said "you said this was a comedy, people died." Lol I am also a trivia junky. I look up the IMDB trivia all the time.
HELL yes. Shanelle watching Fargo and I'm SO in. :) Might be my favorite movie ever made. I had chills when I learned a movie I'd be working on years ago (as an underling) called "The Cooler" would involve Mr. Macy. I spent a few weeks with him, driving him around, and even when we had to work all night, he insisted that the bar stay open so he could buy us all beers in the morning. Such a nice guy and I love this movie so much!
If I had a million bucks buried in the snow that my partner didn't know about, and he insisted on taking the stolen car with hot tags and cop's brains all over the carpet, that's now linked to six murders, I wouldn't be able to say yes fast enough. And he's going to pay me for half of it, too???
I remember watching this with some friends and the whole staff of the theater the night before its release. Top 3 all time experience. Not just movies.
I love this movie. It's my favorite Coen Brothers film next to O Brother Where Art Thou. Franny Mc is insanely good; so is William H. Macy. I love how almost every scene with Marge and Norm together involves eating. The two of them are comedy gold.
Oh, also, the buried money that is left unaccounted for comes back into play in the Fargo TV series, which you would think couldn't match the movie but is aMAZing.
I watched this back in the day, rented on video..lol, and I wasn't sure what I was getting into but was pleasantly surprised. I was into action and horror but the pace drew me in for some weird reason. Love the actors. Thanks for the reaction, great as always. Who found the money in the spring? haha
I remember the Siskel and Ebert review of this. Ebert said that while they were watching the movie together, after the guy sweeping in the street told his story, Siskel leaned over and said "this is why I watch movies." At least, that's how I remember it.
Great movie. Check out the FARGO TV show also, every season has been amazing! No Frances McDormand though in the TV show but each season is different and wonderfully done - writing, acting, directing. 🤩

So yeah, we'll see you next time then ❤️💚☘️🇺🇦
I’m so sad William Hurt passed away, I been watching his movies for over 40 years, thanks Shanelle for reacting to this classic
Same here. William Hurt was one of my faves. He delivered some of my favorite performances of all time in ‘The Big Chill’, ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman,’ ‘Children of a Lesser God,’ ‘Broadcast News,’ and ‘The Accidental Tourist.’
R.I.P. to the great thespian.
He he, “chipper”… I see what you did there.
Love the commentary and faq you do at the end!! Really like this movie it’s a gem- 10/10 it’s always so much fun to watch you watch movies!
*Most definitely watch the show. They’re amazing*
My friend and I are from Minnesota. We watched it at the movie theater she managed. She was all offended. “We don’t talk like that!” “Actually, we do. “
Yah sure you betcha, we do. Less so in the Twin Cities but it creeps out.
lol it surely is our accent, it's just not as strong with most people anymore.
I did ❤ the movie, the English Patient tho... nobody ever talks about it, and nobody's ever reacted to it.... just saying... it'd b a good reaction movie! ... and yes, it did love Fargo as well
Tough choice. I love the english patient.
Marge and Norm's relationship is the kind I need
Saw it in the theatre when it came to Sweden back in '96. First time I remember seeing Peter Stormare (who's Swedish) in anything. He's been in lots of stuff since then. Absolutely loved it.
I was so excited to see this come up! This was my mom's favorite movie. :) My mom and I were born in Wisconsin and my "home" accent is very close to this, lol. I can fall into it so easily. Watching this made me miss my mom so much.
As always, your takes on the filmmaking are fascinating.
Burn After Reading is my favorite Coen Bros. movie. It actually has a somewhat similar plot to Fargo, though more generally comedic. Frances McDormand is utterly hysterical. As is George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and John Malkovich, in particular.
I absolutely love your review and trivia section 😊😊
This is my favourite Coen Brothers film. William H Macy plays pathetic so well and Frances McDormand is wonderful.
I always enjoy the trivia segments in your videos. I'm not too far into the video, but if you haven't seen 'No Country for Old Men,' it's really good. Good review so far.
Her take on the a few things in that movie would be interesting. Quite unique.
Roger Deakins did the cinematography on Fargo and Oh Brother Where Art Thou. He was the cinematographer on a lot of Coen Bros movies including No Country For Old Men
His work on No Country was incredible! Some of those shots were heartbreakingly good.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 👍👍
Shanelle!! The Ladykillers!! You will love it!!
Very nice reaction video. You notice the same things in movies i do. Like the one shot on that empty parking lot to not mess up the snow and so on. :)
Cheers.
Marge Gunderson is my all-time favorite movie cop!
More than good.
You got to love a Jose Feliciano cameo.
She said "you said this was a comedy, people died." Lol
I am also a trivia junky.
Yes! Frances McDormand is an absolute treasure. One of my favorite films. Still love the trivia, Shanelle.
Love the trivia section and your reactions to the trivia.
So glad you watched this!
I love this movie. It's my favorite Coen Brothers film next to O Brother Where Art Thou. Franny Mc is insanely good; so is William H. Macy. I love how almost every scene with Marge and Norm together involves eating. The two of them are comedy gold.
oh, something that I recognized from a later show (No Country for Old Men) was the 'headlights on the horizon' which opened a new plot sequence.
I love the trivia section.
It's nice to hear you say we're friends.-Ernie More Jr. (one in a crowd)
Your channel will go far. Nice, thorough job and you're very charming.
I have to say IMO Patricia Routledge as Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances is THE QUEEN of one way phone calls! :)
I still remember when I first saw that movie. I had no idea what to expect and I loved it. It is still one of my favourite movies.
I enjoy your reactions, and yes, I enjoy the trivia.
Great movie. Check out the FARGO TV show also, every season has been amazing! No Frances McDormand though in the TV show but each season is different and wonderfully done - writing, acting, directing. 🤩
