Outstanding work from Doug Trumbull - I would have never have guessed that it was practical special effects being used in those scenes. I really want to see more organic effects being used in movies.

Douglas Trumbull is a genius! He still goes to show that even though technology has progressed, that practical or 'Organic' effects can still be done and look 1000 times better! The filming structure of such effects has changed and the technology to finesse them has improved!

I think CGI was used in those cases where organic effects were not enough... but still it all ended up being a thousand percent more awesome because of the organic effects, and I'm pretty sure the beauty of them also pushed the CG team very hard in directions where they wouldn't have gone had they not been working with someone as masterful as Trumbull. I for one would have loved to just serve the coffee there and witness them all in action.

2001, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner, The Tree of Life, even Star Trek The Motion Picture (though the story couldn't compete with all those effects shots). Just stop for a moment and consider the kind of mind-blowing visuals this man has made part of film history and the cultural lexicon. Whenever someone talks about a star gate or futuristic city or cosmic encounter - his stamp is on the images in their mind.

I would be even further in joy if some of the footage could be captured with 35mm or 70mm motion picture film. : )

These videos are great, also Lord of the Rings used practical for shots many were convinced were CGI. Never undersell or under estimate the power of practical.

"He don't need no stinkin" computers!!" Today's CGI FX techs would be lost without a computer. Trumbull will always be the #1 SPFX visionary of cinema.

Such a braindead take. Do you think we just push the “make it pretty” button? We’re not “techs” we’re artists. Obviously computers help us do our jobs more efficiently but a lot of the digital concepts we know translate to how things were practically done before CGI existed.

It's almost entirely CGI, made by the 100-200 artists in the credits, under VFX supervisor Dan Glass. Doug Trumbull was VFX consultant for the shoot of the (wonderful) practical elements that were blended into the CGI scenes.
